Lucy Lou’s Ghost Secret
Illustrated by Jan Michael Vincent Sy
Lucy Lou lived with her mama, Etha, in an old country house. The house had two large bedrooms and a large kitchen. It had a front porch that covered the entire front of the house.
Lucy Lou was sleeping comfortably on her bed when her mother awakened her.
Wake up, baby. There’s a ghost in the house,
she said. Let’s go over to Nezzie’s and spend the night.
Lucy Lou thought to herself, This is the fourth time we have left home because Mother keeps seeing the ghost. Mother said she had seen the ghost again, that it was always hanging from the ceiling and that the ghost always wore a white dress.
So Lucy Lou’s mother took her by the hand, and away they went down the road to Nezzie’s house.
She and her mother had to cross a branch on a log to get to Nezzie’s house. It was the fall of the year, and the leaves had begun to fall. The days were still warm, but the nights were cool. The moon and the stars in the sky seemed to guide them as they went across the field to Nezzie’s house. And even though the moon and the stars were giving light, they could still see the fireflies. They were lined up in a straight line, like a marching band.
In order to get to Nezzie’s house, they had to go over a branch. The branch was about six feet deep.
There was a log there to walk across the branch. They had walked this log many times before. When they reached the log, her mama went across first, and before Lucy Lou could cross, a huge snake crawled upon the log. The snake was about five or six feet long and was arrayed in many beautiful colors. So here they were, Lucy Lou and her mother separated from each other by a snake; so close, yet so far.
So they both sat down to wait for the snake to leave so that Lucy Lou could cross over.
As Lucy Lou sat there, she thought about her nice warm bed. She could almost feel the nice warm covers, pulled up around her neck, keeping her all cozy and warm. She could not understand how her mother could be afraid of someone who was dead. Mother said the ghost was her husband’s first wife. Lucy
