The Adventures of Cyril the Squirrel - Ronald Bourn

    Cyril The

    Reluctant Hero

Cyril playing chase with his girlfriend, Cherry, round the tree trunk. See her paw disappearing off the edge of the page!

Two of the neighborhood cats Fluffy and Misty were in next door’s garden hunting for mice, which they did quite often. It was all overgrown with a couple of old car wrecks just lying rusting away without windows and other bits and pieces. They had been neglected for years, making it a perfect place for cats to have fun in. Around the rubbish were a couple of fruit trees.

Suddenly Misty sprang up, landing on top of one of two oil drums standing side by side between two trees, resting against the trunks. Looking down at Fluffy, Misty said, Come on I will race you to the top of the tree.

Right, replied Fluffy, jumping onto the other drum.

When I say go, Misty continued, you run up that one and I will run up mine so get ready. Fluffy half sat down all tense like a coiled spring, wiggling his bottom as he concentrated, looking up at the tree. Misty by now was doing exactly the same thing.

Out of nowhere a voice shouted, Go! The two cats shot up the tree like bullets from a gun. It was more in amazement than anything else as both reached the top more or less together.

Looking down they saw Cyril the squirrel, paws on his hips and his long bushy tail curled up behind him, looking up at them and chuckling loudly. Why did you do that? asked Misty.

I was back from the Bourns’ garden after a good feed of nuts when I saw what you were up to, Cyril replied. Anyway for a game like that you need a starter and judge.

Suppose you are right, Misty answered, while Fluffy nodded in agreement.

Well that can be me, so come on down. Cyril added.

Both cats cheered with excitement and purred loudly as they scrambled back down to the oil drums. OK, this is the plan, explained Cyril, taking charge of the situation as usual.

All of a sudden the cats’ ears started twitching. What’s that noise? asked Fluffy.

I think someone’s coming, Misty replied.

Can’t see anybody, said Cyril, running up a tree and looking round. "Now back to the game! I will say Ready! Steady! Go! You two will race to the top of the trees where I will be waiting, and then I’ll declare the winner. As judge, my word is final! Agreed? The cats nodded, so Cyril went to the top of the tree.

Reaching the top, Cyril looked round. Come on, shouted Fluffy.

What are you waiting for? added Misty.

Cyril ran back down. We best forget it today, he said, all flustered. There are some children making their way up the garden through the undergrowth, looking for mischief!

Of course, they are all on their school holidays, that’s why, said Fluffy with a sigh.

Right, replied Misty, jumping down from his oil drum followed by Fluffy. We will meet up same time tomorrow, alright with you Cyril?

Can’t wait! he shouted before disappearing into the treetops.

The following day Fluffy and Misty made their way next door, chasing the butterflies. On the way they clawed at the odd fence post like cats do. Misty stood at the bottom of the oil drum and said, Here we are, no Cyril yet?

Fluffy replied, looking around, Just look at the mess those youths left yesterday. He pointed to a couple of doors and a car bonnet they had ripped off the old wrecks and thrown about the place. There were also a couple of broken branches, some lying on the floor and some hanging from the trees. Still, they had left the oil drums alone.

Yes, replied Misty, "but at least we can have our
