CK Stone

CK Stone is a snarky, sarcastic pain in the aa--never mind. He dislikes having to write bios, but is willing to talk in person about himself for extended periods of time. Among other things, he is an actor with a few indie films and some extra work to his name; he is also a cartoonist, a writer of florid prose, assorted lyric poetry, haiku and is the producer of a mixed bag of Limericks. He has nothing published under the name “CK Stone” until now, but has several short stories published under the name on his day-job paycheck. The publications include a story in the anthology "TV Gods" and another in "A Realm Beyond," both from Fortress Publishing. There are two short stories published in “Triangulation” from Parsec INK and another piece in “Six from Parsec” His prize-winning story “The Thithshtach Diner” was also published in the ezine “Speculon.” He even has clean (!) limericks published in a chapbook. CK has also read stories for podcasts for Psuedopod. An avid reader of science fiction and fantasy and eldritch horror for years, he is active in the SF/F community in the Pittsburgh area. He also accompanies Tia to Tang Soo Do and is certified for his black belt test in Haidong Gumdo. Other evenings, he participates in the same writing and critique group as Tia, where he spends time convincing other writers that he knows what he's doing.

I pace in the well-lit living room, gun in hand, my eyes glued to the windows and door, that is, when they weren’t darting to the wall clock in the dining area of the open plan space. It had been too long and I was getting antsy.

They’ll be back soon. Maria’s soft voice floated through the too quiet air of the house. It startled me a little.

I hate silence. It gives me the creeps. To me, it means always being alert, looking and listening for things that may or may not be there. I hated it at the orphanage. They hated noisy kids so everyone had to be silent. It showed character, the matron said. I was a lifer, kicked out by mom at six years old then kicked out from the orphanage once I turned eighteen. The leaving wasn’t so bad. And Maria’s and Lee’s arrivals helped me with the loneliness during my time there. My life wasn’t so silent anymore. Hence why the thought of leaving without them was imaginable. But I had to, to set up for our lives on the outside. A year later, Maria aged out and Lee ran away, then we were together again, making the most of life and working had to get Maria into med school. She had a future and I… I just didn’t want to be alone. So I worked to put my foster sisters through school before our fairy godfather made Lee a millionaire overnight.

Thinking of Dave always makes my heart pinch a little. I still have nightmares over how he died.

But that was when I realized we were no longer in Kansas. No, now, our lives are something pulled out of a fairytale book. The original, not the fluffy and warm Disney version. The nightmare inducing Brothers Grimm’s one.

Werewolves were real. Vampires too. And at this moment, we’ve found ourselves in a five-hundred-year-old fight that truly isn’t any of our business. We just had to fall for these
