A Long Journey - Angela Waters

    FOREWORD

I first met with Angela Waters when she had asked me to assist her as one of her guest speakers at a conference that she had organized for women who are and had been subjected to domestic violence.  It was a pleasure to have been a part of this and we connected instantly. Since that day she has been a part of my life and I have been a part of hers. Angela through her own story of overcoming abuse is an inspiration to many. Nothing is too much for her to do and I am honored to have her as a part of The Church of United Nations where she ministers regularly.  Her writings always have meaning to them and gives insight and understanding to real life issues as confirmed in her introduction and I know you will find hope and peace as you read through them.

Apostle Fiona Lynch – Senior Pastor of The Church of United Nations, Author, Teacher and Founder of The School of Destiny in the UK.

    INTRODUCTION

It has been a long journey to getting these poems published.  I began writing them in the 1970’s in Mannheim, West Germany as a young mother of three.  I was wanting to help my friend’s son who was having a Martin Luther King program at his high school.  Since that time, I have performed many of them around the world and some have been published in different newspapers along the way.

The times were rough with the Civil Rights Movement, and the horrific childhood I had so I wrote from where I was at in my life.  During the journey, I began to learn of the love of God and it changed my mindset and my life.  I was set free from some of the baggage I was carrying, and as a result I began to share and others were able to find liberation and peace as well.

I consider myself a very Spiritual person.  As a survivor of many forms of abuse including but not limited to physical, verbal, emotional, rape, incest and domestic violence, I stand as a testimony to the power of God to bring you through difficult conditions in your life.  From an early age I witnessed domestic violence first hand and have lost two siblings at the hands of someone they trusted and loved; a brother beaten to death by extended family members and a sister stabbed to death by her fiancé.  I was shot in the head while a pregnant teen, by gang members trying to kill my father who was a gang member in Chicago, Illinois.

God has blessed me to be the mother of five, grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother of ten.  I was kicked out of school in the eighth grade and denied returning, and credit God for opening doors later in life for me to pursue my education.  I earned a Bachelors in Public Administration/Political Science, is Certified in Non-Profit Management in Economic and Community Development.  I was also able to graduate with Honors for my two Masters’ Degrees; one in Divinity and I wrote my Thesis for Christian Education, on Can Christian Education Help People with Bulimia because of being bulimic for eight years.  My other Master’s is in Christian Education with Church Administration and Leadership as my focus.

During the journey of this book, I have worked tirelessly on civil activism which is close to my heart and have served on many boards that deal with Prison Reform, Racial Profiling, Education, I was a Prison Chaplain at Metro State Women Prison in Atlanta, and elected  to four terms: two as
