Chapter 1
It is a pleasant spring afternoon. The smell of cake fills the air of a little kitchen in a suburban neighborhood. A woman lights the candles on the cake and carries it to backyard where people are gathered around a picnic table. The woman placed the cake at the head of the table in front of a little girl no more than eight years old. Then everyone began to sing.
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you Casey.
Happy eleventh birthday, they all said joyfully!
Casey blows out the candles, and everyone cheers. Then a camera pans back to a news station.
That was little Casey Willis celebrating her eleventh birthday. Another precious life saved by Eternity,
the news anchor says.
Then the television is cut off by sixteen-year-old girl. The girl gets up from the brown sofa and walks over to the window.
You are probably wondering how an eight-year-old girl could be celebrating her eleventh birthday. Well, it is a very interesting story you will want to hear. This story about Summer Bluestone, her mother Sarah, and how she changed the world forever. Like most women in the world, Sarah worried about aging and was obsessed with trying to look young. So, it was no surprised that she worked at a cosmetics company. She spent months trying to find the perfect face cream that could erase the signs of aging without surgery. Sadly, nothing ever fit her standards, even though her husband told her she was beautiful every day and loved her just as was. But it was never enough. She still longed for a way to escape the aging effects of time.
Little did she know, she would get her wish and change the world forever. One night when Sarah was leaving work she was attacked by a vampire. Crazy right but true, so somehow the vampire got trapped while trying to capture Sarah. Instead of running away like a normal person would have done, Sarah took the vampire to the basement of her job and then began experimenting with the vampire’s blood.
After three years, she had a breakthrough, by synthesizing the vampire’s blood with other chemicals into a pill that could stop the processing of aging and so much more. She named it Eternity, forever in a bottle
as it would be marketed. How it works is whatever age you are is what you will remain. It eases all signs of aging from gray hair, wrinkles, and so on. It can heal any physical injury, both internal and external. It can stop incurable diseases from progressing but cannot cure the diseases. You cannot reproduce while taking Eternity. You will not have an appetite and can go days without eating. Certain day’s sunlight will irritate you, but you will not burst into flames.
The only catch is you have to take one pill every day for the rest of your life. The moment you stop, your body converts back to its actual age, and I do not have to tell you that is not a pretty sight. Eternity changed the world in so many ways. It kept people alive who had incurable diseases and helped end world hunger. Models and celebrities used it like crazy to maintain their star faces, not to mention the thousands of people who used it to lose weight. However, the only people who had a problem with Eternity were the religious ones. They claimed it is the devil’s pill, and that death is a part of life that should not be avoided. But in cases like Casey Willis, it caused the debt to go on and on. So, in a world where death is an option, what type of life would you live that has no limits? How far would you go? What would you be willing to give up? Who would you be willing to sacrifice for your Eternity?
Our day begins with Summer a white female with long brown, that stopped at the top of back. Her eyes were soft green and with a slender noise that poked out a little. She had pink lips that were thin, but perked out in in the center of her mouth. Summer was feeling gloomy because today is the anniversary of her father’s death. She was all alone at home, and her mother nowhere to be found, which was nothing new for Sarah. Summer cried a little as she looked at the last picture they took together. Her father was her world, and after his death life just felt almost hopeless especially on this day. She placed the picture frame on her nightstand and pulled herself together. Then she went down stairs, grabbed her backpack, and left out the front door. Thirty minutes later she arrived at Falcon High School. Summer parked her car and headed inside the school.
Hey Summer!
a guy shouted running up to her from behind.
Hey Ben, what happen to your cast?
I threw it away.
Why?
Because I don’t need it anymore.
Ben you broke your leg Sunday. Do you really expect me to believe it’s completely healed after three days? Unless . . . Ben please tell me, you didn’t?
Ben said nothing and just looked at Summer.
You did it! Ben, how could you? Ow!
Summer said as a small rock hit her in the head.
Your mom is the devil!
a random student shouted as he ran off. Ben was about to go after the student until Summer stopped him.
Let him go Ben it’s not worth it.
I’ll get him later, but are you okay?
I’m fine.
Are you sure? You’re bleeding. Let me take you to the nurse.
I’m fine Ben. It’s just a scratch. But why did you do it Ben?
Do what?
Really Ben? You took Eternity to heal your leg.
Yeah, everyone does it. That’s what it’s there for.
Really, so every time you cut yourself or get sick, you just gonna take Eternity to get rid of it? That’s how you get hooked on it. Then you’ll get to a point where you’ll always have to take it. I don’t know about you but I don’t wanna be sixteen forever.
It’s not like that. Summer, I got a big game tomorrow, and the coach has some big scouts coming. You know I gotta be at my best.
Yeah that’s what everyone says as an excuse for their addiction.
Summer.
Forget it Ben, I’ll just see you later.
Fine, but at least let me take you to the nurse’s office.
I’m fine Ben. It’s just a little scratch, I gotta go.
Summer.
Ben, I have to go to class. I’ll just catch up with you later,
Summer said as she walked away leaving Ben in the parking lot.
The first bell would ring and classes would begin. Summer was a great student who kept a 3.1 grade-point average, and she one of those students who things just came naturally to. She was on the softball team and the quiz bowl. However, she quit the softball team because it reminded her of her father. He took her to every practice and was at every game. He supported and encouraged her in everything she did, which was one of the major things she missed after he passed. The hours came and went depending on the class. Like most sixteen-year-olds, Summer had a job at a local hospital. So once school was over, Summer went to work. Summer worked on the second floor where the patient’s rooms were and the waiting room. She joined a nurse at the front desk in the waiting room area. In the waiting room were a man and woman crying, which was nothing new.
Hey Ms. Pam.
Hey Summer, how are you?
I’m fine and you?
Good, but what’s wrong? Because anytime you say you’re fine something is wrong.
It’s the same old thing. But what’s their story?
Summer said looking over at the couple in the waiting room.
Well, that’s Rev. Michael Thomas and his wife. One of the crusaders who hate your mother and everything she stands for. But their son has a very serious brain tumor, and things aren’t looking to good.
Who’s their doctor?
Doctor Henrick.
Just then Doctor Henrick walked over to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas.
Doctor, how’s my son?
Mrs. Thomas said worriedly.
I’m sorry to tell you this, but the tumor is a lot more aggressive than we comprehended. At this point there’s nothing we can do but—
No! No! No! I’m not going to accept that. You get back in there and find a way to save my son!
Mr. Thomas said angry.
Please, he’s my only son. There’s has to be something you can do to save him?
Mrs. Thomas pleaded.
There is one thing we can do that’ll work for sure.
Well spit it out already!
Mr. Thomas ordered.
Eternity, it’s the only thing that’ll save him for sure. But I have to have your consent before I can administer it.
No! There has to be something else you can do besides that,
Mr. Thomas said.
I’m sorry, but there’s nothing else I can do.
Do it! Give him the Eternity!
Mrs. Thomas said as she signed the paper work.
What are you doing?
Mr. Thomas said in shock
Saving our son! Give him the dam pill!
Mrs. Thomas said in a panic.
No! If you put that crap in my son, I will sue this entire hospital!
Mr. Thomas ordered.
Mr. Thomas, I have to go with best interest of the patient unless Mrs. Thomas changes her mind.
I’m not, now go save my son!
Doctor Henrick left to go administer the Eternity, leaving Mr. and Mrs. Thomas arguing about the situation. Summer set back at the front desk just watching and thinking to herself.
"Is this what it’s come too?"
Summer continued on till it was time for get off. Before she went home, Summer stopped by her father’s grave. Her father’s headstone was square and solid black with white in graving on it. Summer place some flowers she bought from one of the stores in hospital on the grave.
I miss you. God, I miss you so much! Nothing really changed. Mom’s too busy being famous to care about anything. I quit softball and probably quiz bowl too. I just don’t care about those things anymore. I don’t really care about anything really. I just really miss you and wish you were here. I’m gonna head home because it’s late. But I promise I’ll be back with happier news. I love you Daddy,
Summer said as she kissed the top of the headstone before walking away.
When she arrived home, Summer found her mother looking in the mirror of the foyer. She was dressed in a little black dress with sparkling diamonds all around.
You look pretty,
Summer said as she walked past her mother.
"Thank you. It’s something simple for the mayor’s banquet. He’s honoring me tonight. Honestly, I wonder how many times can you possibly honor someone? This will be like the twelfth time, but who’s counting. After all I did create the greatest thing man has ever
