Introduction
After living in China for over 10 years of my life, teaching, learning Kung Fu, and sharing experiences with the locals, I have collected a huge amount of information about the people and the culture, as well as the wonderful and unique cities of this very special country. This book describes the most important information you need to know about China, with a special emphasis on the culture and the language. It will help you a lot, either you’re a traveler, a student, a business owner, or a future worker in this country, just as it has been useful to me and many other foreigners I have encountered during the many years I lived in China.
Cultural Insights
I always try to take the best of my experiences. In China, I learned more about being practical, self-sufficient and determined. These 3 attributes are very uncommon in the European culture. Besides, the best lessons are never seen and can't be found in pictures.
Another important lesson learned is related to perspective, or how others see us and how we can learn from it. For example, in China, a Teacher that can DJ is cool, but in my country is a shame, and I've lost jobs and students I was tutoring because of that, and also because I was famous for performing in rave parties. It's also amazing how 100 euros can be spent in a week in any European country, but feed me for an entire month in China, or the fact that being a foreigner in the Philippines is always equivalent to being very rich, but in India you can actually experience a rich lifestyle with what in most countries can't be called above the average. Again, experiences that can't be put into words, but are extremely valuable.
Maybe now, I'll experience my past from a new perspective, to learn something different as well, before the next step is taken. You see, it’s relatively easy to predict the future once we realize how life leads us towards our most needed lessons.
Many young entrepreneurs found their way in China. You need merely 500 yuan in China or as nearly as nothing to start one, as the government doesn’t care about little illegal businesses. That’s an advantage for a startup. However, once your business becomes profitable, the government can take everything from you with any excuse. Any injustice practiced by Communists is seen as legal in China. The Chinese also look at the whole world when doing business and can travel to the most unknown places if seeing a good opportunity there. Nonetheless, China exports cheap products and imports what they lack – food and materials. Brasil, for example, exports what china needs the most – soy and rice.
China doesn’t focus on the path to success as many other countries, but instead on the source, and that’s why they send their people to other countries to do such business directly through the millions of Chinese chain stores, and also sends entire companies to Africa to maximize internal revenue. And yet, you barely see Chinese enjoying their life abroad because it’s not part of their culture to do that. Chinese save as much as possible to invest in the future, i.e., their personal business investments, buying a house, etc. Chinese put all they have in the bank. And it’s not surprising to see the same trend in relationships, as Chinese women choose either rich men or intelligent men, that have the potential to become wealthy.
Their eyes are always in the future. And that’s why Chinese can destroy old places and houses, and forget their past to build a better and modern building on
