About this ebook

I scooped up Zeebe in my arms and held her close. Her little body felt cold and she didn't move. That afternoon in the garden, Zeeba rubbed up against my shoe for the first time. I held out my hand. "I want to hold you so much. When are you ever going to let me hold you?"

She darted out from behind a short stack of bricks by our shed and pranced in a large circle around me. Her zebra-like stripes wrapped her small frame and spilled over her forehead. She was beautiful and her bouncy, charming personality was on full display. We were instantly captivated with each other and my routine trip to the garden exploded with delight.

My voice found a high range of soprano as I cooed, Here, kitty, kitty. I continued as if she could understand every word. You are so adorable. Where did you come from? Come here, little sweetie. I want to hold you. Will you let me pick you up? She lifted her tail as if I were petting her, rubbed up against anything she could find, and padded the earth with her tiny, perfect paws. It must be the mother of this little bundle of love. Just then, another small head appeared beside mama. This little one was pure black with big intense eyes that broadcast fear. Those eyes intently followed the sanguine princess who had come to greet me. So, little sweetie. It looks like you have a mama and a brother or sister.

Come, little one. I won’t hurt you. Is this your mommy over here? Come here, sweetie.

She confirmed my assumption by running playfully over to mom and lovingly rubbing against her. Her mother slapped her away and dashed off with black kitty close behind.

Oh, honey, I gasped to the stoic little face staring at me. I’m so sorry, precious. You don’t deserve that. Come here, let me hold you and love you. I would never treat you like that. She simply turned her head and began licking her shoulder. Even the cruel rejection
