Everyone can become wealthy
WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY FLOWERS!
shouted Gail as she ran over to the patch where a boy was kicking the tops off the flowers.
What does it look like?! Get out of here dork!
yelled the boy, who was wearing an old leather jacket.
As he turned to look at her, she immediately recognised him. It was Boris Duckworth.
Despite only being thirteen years old, Boris was notorious for being the village bully. At school he’d pick on someone simply because he thought it was a funny thing to do. If you didn’t think it was funny, then you’d be the next one he’d pick on!
Luckily for Gail, whilst she was the same age as Boris, she went to the other school in their village.
Just before she was about to react to Boris calling her a dork!, Gail remembered something her Grandpa had once told her: Bullies bully people as they have been bullied themselves. They don’t see happiness in their lives and can’t stand to see other people happy.
It was well known that Boris’ parents were really mean to him. One time Boris got a small piece of chewing gum stuck in his hair. The next thing he knew, his mum dragged him to the barber, crying, and had him shave off all of Boris’ hair.
Gail decided that rather than just shouting back at Boris, she’d try a different approach. Actually . . . please carry on kicking my flowers. Saves me a job! I need to take the petals off those flowers to make money anyway!
Boris didn’t know what to do or say. He wanted to keep kicking the flowers, but he didn’t want to do as he was told.
YOU’RE LYING!
Boris blurted. You can’t make money from these flowers I’ve just killed.
Then please carry on. As I said, you’re actually helping me,
said Gail with a smirk.
It was then Boris realised who she was.
I know you. You’re the girl with all the money and the super-rich grandparents!
hollered Boris.
It wasn’t easy to tell that Gail had a lot of money from looking at her. She was a ‘geek’, ‘nerd’, ‘dork' or whatever other word you can think of for someone who cares more about learning new things than being ‘cool’. Unlike many of her geeky friends, she was confident and proud to be a nerd (which, in a strange way, actually made her cool). Most days she’d wear a t-shirt with some dorky quote on it, like From a single seed, a forest can grow!
.
You’re so lucky to have been GIVEN all that money so you can do whatever you want,
said Boris as he kicked another bunch of flowers.
I haven’t been given any money for many years. I have earned and grown my money myself,
replied Gail.
YOU CAN’T GROW MONEY! Haven’t your parents told you that money doesn’t grow on trees?
returned Boris.
My grandpa told me that whilst money doesn’t grow on trees, it can grow like trees,
Gail fired back.
Gail wanted to tell Boris what her grandpa had told her about money, but she was still angry at him for kicking her flowers and being so rude—not to mention her dislike for bullies in general. At the same time, she wanted to help him because of how his parents treated him.
Gail composed herself and said, I’ll make you a deal. If you help me pick up all the petals from the flowers you’ve kicked, and put them in this bag, I’ll share with you what my grandpa taught me about the secrets of money. You never know, these secrets might help you grow up to be wealthy!
Picking up petals didn’t appeal to Boris at all. However, the thought of learning the secrets of money got him really excited. He looked around to make sure there weren’t any other kids around. OK – only because I want to be RICH. This better not be a trick!
said Boris.
Gail smiled to herself when she saw the boy everyone was afraid of, picking up the petals, which she was then going to use to make some money with.
As they worked together, Gail explained that during her summer holidays, she’d stay at her grandparents’ house. Whilst there, her grandpa enjoyed nothing more than sharing the amazing tales of how he discovered the secrets of money on his adventure to the island of Pucha-Pucha. These secrets led her grandpa to becoming one of the wealthiest people in the country.
In fact, Gail’s school, the Fitzgerald Middle School, was actually named after her grandparents as they would use their money to make generous donations to local charities.
You are so lucky. I’ve never been taught about money,
said Boris. He sighed as he stuffed handfuls of petals into the bag. "My parents have never seemed to have any money, despite both working. The only time I hear them talking about money is when they are arguing. Whenever I ask if I can have some money they bark, ‘Why would we give you any of our money?’".
Gail told Boris, Like most people, your parents were probably never taught about money. That might be why they argue about money. I’m happy to tell you everything my grandpa taught me about money. You see, when my grandpa was growing up his family never had any money.
You’re joking! Your grandpa came from a family that didn’t have a lot of money? There’s no way I can become as RICH as your grandpa,
replied Boris.
Let’s go to the Burger Shack to grab a drink. I can then tell you how my grandpa discovered the secrets of money. You’ll see that if you follow my grandpa’s Three Rules of Wealth then you can become WEALTHY just like him.

Why do you think Gail was so kind to Boris even though he was a bully?
