La interpretación de filmes basados en obras provenientes de otros medios a menuda ha estado limitada por enfoques críticos que privilegian la obra original; éste es el caso, especialmente, de las adaptaciones de los clásicos de la literatura. A través del análisis detallados de dos filmes contemporáneos 'The Age of Innocence (Martin Scorsese, 1993) y The Portrait of a Lady (Jane Campion, 1996)', este trabajo replantea la adaptación como un modo de recreación del pasado que cristaliza a través de las texturas del popularmente llamado film de época. Trasladando la reescritura de dos textos del realismo literario norteamericano al contexto de la obra de ambos cineastas, el análisis comparativo se concentra en la imagen en tanto que portadora de una memoria intertextual recuperada bajo el prisma de diferentes discursos contemporáneos.
