Kevin and the Lions
36873.pngW e will never know how the enchanted pebble came to be lying on the pavement in Union Avenue that hot day. Somebody put it there, or dropped it by accident, or perhaps it just appeared.
The city centre was crowded with shoppers, and among them were Kevin, his two big brothers, and their mother. Kevin couldn’t keep up with the other members of his family very easily, as he was the youngest and the smallest. And he found, in addition, many things to distract him. There were toys and clothes in the shop windows that he found fascinating, and there were interesting people, and cars passing continually. There was such a lot to look at, and to think about. So the conversation consisted mostly of, Come on, Kevin!
and Keep with us, Kevin!
and Where is Kevin?
He started to feel cross because he wasn’t allowed to walk at his own pace. He didn’t want to be rushed past everything at top speed. He wanted to wander casually along and enjoy the city. Then, suddenly, just in front of him, he saw something gleaming. He couldn’t be sure if it was green, or blue, or brown, or a mixture of all three colours. It was very odd. He bent down to pick it up, and three older people chorused, Come on, Kevin!
Kevin picked up the object, and saw that it was just a pebble. It had stopped glowing, and was now a dull brown shade. But he held it in his hand anyway. His mother stopped, waited for him to catch up, and then said, Darling, please try not to dawdle. I know that you must be bored, but we’ve nearly finished the shopping. We’ll be home before long.
