About this ebook

How do we learn to listen to the voice of God? Sometimes, this is extremely difficult. Especially when we experience a sudden change in how we would normally do things or how we would naturally go about our daily lives. Is it because we choose not to hear? Does selective hearing augment the challenge?

There was a time, not long ago, when God’s chosen people were so busy that they could not hear God. Hustling and bustling through life causes some to not hear God. There is just too much noise. People busy themselves in activities which drowns out God’s voice. Sadly, for many, His still small voice continues being drowned out by noise.

Through Elijah’s experiences, we can maneuver through challenges of having or operating with compromised listening skills and learn something. I trust this book will enlighten you, encourage you, and bring understanding and clarity to The Law of Listening. It is of vital necessity that we do our best at not just learning, but also to listen to the voice of God.

The Law of Listening - Cathy Emerson

    Introduction

    THE LAW OF LISTENING

How do we learn to listen to the voice of God? Sometimes this can be extremely difficult to do. Especially when we experience a sudden change in how we would normally do things or how we would go about our daily lives. Is it because we choose not to hear? Do we have selective hearing? First, let us define the word listen. According to Webster’s Dictionary, listen means to pay attention to sound as in listening to music. It means to hear something with thoughtful attention; give consideration. Listen means to be alert, to catch an expected sound as in listen for the doorbell.

The word Listen appears in the King James Version of the Bible only once.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name,( Isaiah 49:1).

This is the only scripture wherein the actual word listen is mentioned in the Bible. However, study shows the word Hearken mentioned 233 times. By Webster’s Dictionary, hearken means 1) listen; 2) to give respectful attention to; and 3) to bring to mind something in the past. When God was trying to get the complete attention of the people, He used the word hearken. God used the word hearken whenever He addressed a person/people and when He used an individual to speak on His behalf to the people. He wanted the full attention of whom He was speaking to. He wanted them to remember something (like a promise) that was spoken in the past and He wanted the people to listen.

Isaiah 49:1 uses both words. This must have been something serious for both words to be used. It was a message spoken of before. Who was talking and who or what was the person talking about? Listen, O isles, unto me. Going back a few chapters we can see, in chapter 42, the word isles.

He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law, Isaiah 42:4.

The word isles here is referring to a people, the Gentiles, who were waiting for the Law of God to be fulfilled. God was the one talking in this scripture, and He was speaking about His Son, Jesus the Christ. Isaiah Chapter 42 is filled with scriptures of Messianic prophecies, as does chapter 49 and some others. However, back to my point. When we hear the word hearken, we need to pay close attention to what is spoken afterwards. God gave warning in chapter 42 to wait for His Law. He reminds the Gentiles again of what will occur in chapter 49. This same Messianic prophecy carries over to Daniel 2:44. Are you listening?

There was a time, recently, when God’s chosen people were so busy that they could not hear God. Hustling and bustling through life causes some to
