    The blind dragon appeared dead until his snot-dripping nostrils widened in rhythmic beats. The nose was searching for the slightest of scents. The beast lied with his tree-trunk thick legs spread out on the hard slate floor of his beloved cave; his callous tongue the color of squashed purple grapes, lying loose from his mouth. Clearly the poison I stuffed in the wool of one of my sheep he ate did not finish off the beast, but only managed to leave him dozing.

    Gathering consciousness, his eyes winked open.

    In fright, I dropped his bag of seeds I was stealing, and the bag clinked upon the dragon’s pile of golden leaves, sounding like a wind chime. The dragon did not gaze his eyes toward the sound, but rather turned his ears ever so slightly, listening, and revealing small horns that broke through a patch of rough scales.

    Who steals from a blind dragon? he said in a deep dragony voice, one that sounded like he’d drunk seven barrels of my village’s rum and woke with a hangover that could murder a thousand sailors.

    It was a good question, though, and one that left me speechless. Even though he was a ferocious animal with menacing dark green scales so black they resembled a charred forest, he was old and blind, his eyes the color of greyish thunderclouds with speckles of white clouds floating, adorned with a few streaks of red – clear signs from my poison. He stood up on all fours, very slowly and slightly wobbly, raising his bowed legs until
