Chapter 1: Affirmation
Christian, What Do You Believe?
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.
Affirmations are made through Creeds, proclamations, codes of conduct, perhaps a code of honor recited each day. Many Christians proclaim the Apostle’s Creed, study the Westminster Confession of Faith, or the Heidelberg Catechism. In all of these practices, the goal is to affirm certain truths or beliefs, to instill in the person, knowledge, faith, to create a foundation to build on. These essential truths are the core that we build around, and without the core, any attempt to build up around it will fall in time for it does not have the strength to stand on its own. In the Christian faith ultimately, the Bible is the center of all things, but the Creeds are based on the scripture simply providing a summary of what is within. If a Christian has the scripture as the center what more do, they need? The scripture speaks of God, his character, his relationship to his people, what it is he has anointed, what he has ordained, so what more does the Christian need beyond the Word of God? In the Word we have all that God has revealed about himself to us on this earth. Certainly, there is more our finite minds cannot comprehend, but what God has chosen to reveal to us, and all we need while residing on this earth is within the pages of scripture. If all we need to know is within the pages of scripture, why does it seem that modern society appears to have so many questions which scripture does not address? These questions can result in doubt and perhaps unbelief. They can leave the door open for people to question the authenticity of biblical claims, or cast that shadow of uncertainty in the life of believers which cause them to falter, or stumble, and perhaps in the worst-case scenario walks away from the faith. We cannot remove all of the stumbling blocks in our lives, but what we can address we should be faithful and make the best of attempts to do so. If God is the creator of the universe, and the author of all things which were, are, and will be to come, there must be a reason for the apparent incongruity between scripture and the natural world. We cannot rely on secular scientists to make the reconciliations between scripture and the natural world, so ultimately, we need to tackle this task on our own. We must keep in mind those in the field of science do not have an interest in reconciliation between scripture and the natural world.
The wall of science stands before us, and it seems modern science has unearthed a plethora of issues creating what appears to be many false claims scripture makes regarding the natural world. If the scientific method is true, and if science really has made discoveries which contradict scripture, what is a believer to do? It would be illogical to simply disregard scientific discoveries and simply push forward leaving a divide between the physical and the spiritual elements of the world. Scripture also addresses the physical world, so it would be rather disingenuous of believers to neglect or dismiss the connection between the two.
There are so many questions that have arisen over the years, and the more time passes, the more questions arise. I will address these questions, but this book is not a polemic aimed at atheists, but instead an affirmation of faith to the believer regarding what the new scientific discoveries mean to us. This book is not a fully comprehensive study on the matter, so one should not hope to take what is on these pages and attempt to challenge their professor of Biochemistry when they first arrive at their university. There are many details I simply cannot cover in this book if I hope to keep it succinct, and understandable to the average person. Also, the scope of materials covered in this book would span several university-level textbooks which would encompass volumes much too large causing the reader to bog down in details far too complex for a novice level person to understand.
I hope this book will find its way into the hands of many high school and college-level Christians who are often left dumbfounded as to why their faith seems so illogical and unscientific. Perhaps this book can even help those who have survived the years of high school and university but have always had those little questions in the back of their head which have caused
