Book 3. Other Wanderings of the Fox Spirit Yue

Part 1. Priestess of the Phoenix Shrine

    Chapter 1

First year of the reign of Emperor Roku.

Winter came. At the beginning of the First Moon in Miyako, a ritual of worship of the Four Auspicious Beasts and the Four Cardinal Points took place. And also, with magnificent feasts and solemn congratulations, the New Year was celebrated at the Court.

During the Second Moon, the Emperor appointed additional positions to officials in the province.

At the Phoenix Shrine, New Year were celebrated modestly. The gates of the Shrine were decorated with ritual colored strips of paper, which incessantly rustled in the wind, thereby whispering to the deities about the needs of mere mortals.

The Priest and the Incarnation of the Phoenix offered up proper prayers, praying the Four Auspicious Beasts and light deities to be indulgent towards ‘their children’ throughout the year. Then a feast took place, the beginning of which was announced by the Incarnation of the Phoenix...

Loaded carts brought incense, various food, sweets, colored ribbons for priestesses and fabrics for new clothes of the Incarnations of Sacred Beasts and priests.

    ***

A few days later, word came to the Tsuyuno family estate: Haruo ordered Makoto to return to Enpo province.

Makoto had no choice but to obey... He said goodbye to Inori, promising to give news of himself with the help of the spirit of the falcon that served Yue. The falcon, along with the sandal spirit, brought him letters from Inori. And the young man was not at all embarrassed by the supernatural origin of the messengers. He had guessed from the start that Yue was no ordinary Priestess. And her abilities did not frighten him at all. He was ready for any tricks, even for contact with demons, just to see his beloved. Throughout the years, Yue used her power to arrange lovers' meetings. And before that she put a sleepy spell on the Lady's bodyguards...

Makoto sent Inori a farewell letter with the spirit of the falcon, and Inori was in sorrow. Her heart was breaking apart... She understood that fate had
