    Prologue

In book one, Tranquil Fury, after their unexpected arrival in the lands of Calicon, the six bus mates: Lauren, Logan, Eric, Zack, Ryan, and John met the odd traveler Mirtza, the magic student. With two friends injured, he offered to take all to the healers, but like the rest of the lands, they found the great elfin forest deserted. Stranger yet, not only did a huge tarp cover the expansive forest, but also an enormous ditch surrounded it. It was there that Lauren found her tri-wood staff, and even more peculiar, she healed Zack and Ryan with gifts from the abnormal forest. Her brother, Logan, in search for Lauren, received two odd feather tattoos, which bestowed powers over water and fire.

On that journey, they eventually found elves who led them to dwarves. At the dwarven Ironhouse Mine, the elfin Earth Mother proclaimed Lauren to be an Earth Daughter, and her brother to be Sister’s gift. As well, it was there that the Master Weapon Smith asked Lauren to name a six-foot-long sword, crafted by the four-foot tall dwarves, and during the ceremony, she not only announced the name, Tranquil Fury, but she also proclaimed Eric to be the champion. Adding to the mystery, a set of armor waited deep in the mines, and the only person it would fit was the one named champion.

With strange stories blowing in the wind, a small group left to investigate the mysterious plague that had chased the populations from the lands. Even though they determined it a hoax, the invading forces were real, so after discovering the truth, they rushed back to the Ironhouse Mine. There they found the Earth Mother, their primary source of divine insight, close to death. Arranging for the next stage in her life, she provided prophecies to all, except for Lauren.

With reluctance, Lauren agreed to lead the small group including Mirtza, Gingaar, the six dwarven Ironhouse brothers, her five bus mates, and the six elf Earth Guards. Hoping to find the fleeing population, she needed to both expose the plague hoax and help them take back the eastern lands.

On that journey south, Lauren developed into the Earth Daughter, and with the help of her staff and brother, they maneuvered stealthily through the occupied lands, looking for a pass through the mountains, and following, a strange creature helped them. Traveling fast and hard for so long, fatigue waited one night. However, a second unexpected guest also arrived – black-clad soldiers, who rushed the camp. With John, Eric, Zack, Logan, and Mirtza captured, the remaining group continued to thread their way through the enemy occupied territory, hoping to rescue their friends. Arriving at the jailhouse, Zack had already defeated the captors using his magical gift.

    Sky Elf Chapter 1

Retrieving their ponies from the corral, the dwarves also searched the stables for saddles, and Bor called to Lauren, asking her to check Mirtza’s cloak for the odd magical amulets, especially the wagon containing their armor. Retrieving it, Gingaar passed it to Lauren, who rifled through the pockets, and finding all the amulets, she nodded back.

Jumping in the front of the wagon, Ryan steered the horses towards the back of the cleared property and into the woods. Following on foot, Lauren stopped every ten-feet to plunge the tri-wood staff into the ground, causing the wagon ruts to fill in, making compressed grass once again stand tall, restoring crushed plants to their original vigor, and erasing all traces of their passage. The dwarves, once mounted, raced into the forest to ensure no surprises lay ahead of them, and the Earth Guards held back to protect the Earth Daughter. Traveling miles deep into the forest, when Bor found a small suitable clearing, he called for Ryan to stop the wagon. There they waited for Lauren and the elves, who emerged from the forest an hour later.

When Lauren saw them, she turned to Alron, Post guards.

He signaled to the Dawnfalcons, who turned back towards the road. Secretly, it pleased him, as her words were those of a leader, meaning she still embraced the role of Earth Daughter, even under these dire circumstances.

Bor called out to his brothers, Fen, Hakk. Claimed for Ironhouse, this land is. To enter is an act of war. The two dwarves followed the elves to lend assistance.

Lauren walked to the wagon to check on the injured four, seeing burns, gouges, cuts, broken bones, bruises, and more, but under their clothing, she knew other injuries remained hidden.

    Gingaar, where’s my leaf pouch?

In Mirtza’s wagon, we placed such there for safety.

Pulling out the cloak and finding the amulet, Lauren threw it to the ground, and tossing the cape over it, she pulled it off the wagon to retrieve the pouch. Gor, Fodu, leave two in the back, and put the others on the ground.

Earth Daughter, injuries are great. Stay in the wagon who should? asked Gor.

It looks like Eric and Mirtza have broken ribs, so leave them.

Pulling Logan out first, while he had extensive bruising on his chest and back, the worst was a huge goose egg the size of a softball on the left side of his head. Having seen similar trauma on medical shows, she knew the swelling was forcing the skull down onto the brain, and from the size of the wound, she guessed his skull was fractured, but she lacked the necessary resources to relieve the pressure.

They laid John on his stomach, as his back resembled a piece of raw meat. Fresh wounds, too fresh to scab over, showed where the violent whips had ripped open his skin, exposing muscles, and still oozing different colored liquids. With his lower back extremely bruised, Lauren worried there may also be kidney or liver damage.

She then stopped at the wagon. Mirtza, is this not where we started? However, now our roles are reversed. Don’t worry, friend, all will be well. Huge burn marks were visible on his legs, chest, and neck, which all had large blisters trying to sweat out the captive liquid. One of his hands was red as a lobster, and with his entire chest being a huge multi-colored bruise and burn, she was undecided of where one stopped and the other began. Going to the other side of the wagon, she examined Eric’s condition. As his chest was bare, she felt along his ribs, which moved under the bruised skin. Beyond that, not only was his right arm broken in two spots, but also most of the bones in his right hand shared similar damage. Pausing, she looked up to the sky, Mother, your challenges are too great. I can use a little help.

How shall I help, Earth Daughter? asked Gingaar.

Mirtza kept a medicine bag under the wagon seat. Get it. There should also be a box with a red cross in a backpack. It’s the healing kit we brought. Dumping the contents of the leaf pouch onto the wagon tailgate, she scooped up several berries, and squeezing the juice into Eric’s mouth, she hoped it would stop the pain from waking him. Gor, Fodu, they broke Eric’s arm, so we need to set it, or it’ll heal wrong. Have you set bones before?

Many times, Earth Daughter, answered Fodu.

Fodu, secure the top. Gor, pull from the elbow, but be careful of his lower arm.

As the first climbed into the wagon, the second took up a position at the back. When both were in place, they pulled on the arm. The berries, which had done their job, resulted in Eric remaining motionless. Wiggling the bone with care, she felt the pieces pop back into place, and then they repeated the process for the lower arm. Looking to Gingaar behind them with the medical kits, she asked, Do you understand how to secure broken bones? Find thick sticks and wrap them tight against the arm to keep it straight. We’ll splint his hand later. Going over to the pouch, she retrieved a piece of bark, Gor, crush this into a fine powder and then start a small fire. Bring the water to a boil before adding it and call me when it’s done. Grabbing a few more berries, she headed to Logan, squeezing the liquids into his mouth, Sleep, brother. She looked at John, Fodu, what can we do about him?

Earth Daughter, trained as a barber-surgeon I was.

Repeating the berry procedure with John, she asked, Can you stitch him back together? Fodu nodded, and after Gingaar had splinted Eric’s arm, Lauren called to her, "Mix these into a paste, as we need to treat the burns. Do you remember it from your training? Lauren then turned to Alron, I’m worried about Logan, as I don’t know how to treat such an extensive head wound. Alron, are you listening?"

He was busy staring into the woods. Earth Daughter, five were taken, yet only four suffered torture?

Zack was sitting at the base of a tree with his knees pulled close to his chest, and his arms wrapped around them. The bloody rag used to clean himself lay by his side, and he rocked back and forth mumbling.

What do you mean? asked Lauren.

Do you not find such odd that friend Zack has no wounds? Blood covers him, yet such is not his. I think he is mock injured for sympathy.

Concerned more about the injured, from what she saw, Zack was the least of her problems, What’re you getting at?

Walking over, Alron stood in front, Explain that which happened.

Dude, I don’t know, I really don’t. When I woke this morning, there were dead bodies in the room, and the cell was unlocked. I found you guys out back.

How long were you in the cell?

    Dude, I don’t know.

    Describe that which killed them!

Seriously, Dude, how many times do I have to tell you!

Why did the beast kill the black-clad but not touch you?

Trying to back up, Zack remembered the repetitive questions from the cell and the pain, Look, I have no god damn idea on what happened. OKAY!

Your friends are near death, yet you are like a newborn fawn. How can such be?

His anger was growing, I told you, Dude, I DON’T KNOW!

I think you conspired with the black-clad. Words you spoke as friends were beaten. You are a coward, a traitor. He started pulling out his sword.

    NO, NO, no, noooooooo...

As the others watched, Zack lost focus, causing Alron to back up. There appeared to be something present, but not there at the same time. Then a figure stabilized, transforming into a huge timber wolf standing four-feet tall at the shoulders, which materialized on top of Zack’s clothes. Its appearance had an oddity, as each leg had white fur looking like socks extending down from the knee joint.

Me no like. (Not again, no, no, no, I’m losing my mind. Please stop, please stop.) Little man. Fresh. ("No, no, no.") Hungry.

When Alron took a step towards the wolf, Lauren jumped in front, Zack! Listen to me! You recognize me, Lauren. Calm down.

No more pain. Me no like pain. Me will kill. Fresh ("NO, NO, NO, Stop!")

Everybody put away your weapons, now! She turned, Drop them, or you’ll be sorry. The weapons all fell, Zack, it’s me, Lauren. You’re with friends. Calm down.

Revenge. Kill. No more pain. Me will survive. Little man dies. ("NO. They’re my friends. STOP THIS NOW!")

The beast curled its lips back, exposing huge white canine teeth.

She dropped to her knees, You’re with friends. Nobody will hurt you. You did nothing wrong. Do you hear me?

Gradually, the wolf calmed down, and losing focus, it became a blur. Zack soon appeared in his human form, naked and on all fours, Oh, crap! Grabbing his clothes, he covered himself and ran behind a tree to dress. As he did, they all saw the bizarre patchwork quilt of furs covering most of his abdomen and chest, including the snakeskin on his arm, and the feathers sticking out of his back. The blood covering him a few minutes ago, which had dripped out of his hair, was missing. After dressing, he sat down beside the tree, too ashamed to face them.

Lauren’s voice was cold, Alron, go protect the fire. She then walked over to Zack, Are you feeling okay?

No, this doesn’t feel okay. At first, I thought they were dreams or flashbacks, but no, this is so far from okay. I feel like a reject from a horror movie.

Can I come closer? I only want to talk.

He began crying, What’s happening to me?

Sitting down, she hugged him. Gor, bean juice, please. The two continued to rock back and forth until Zack was out of tears. By that time, Gor approached with caution and two mugs, setting them down beside Lauren. Let’s have a cup and just talk. Tell me what you remember.

For a long time, since we arrived, I’ve had these dreams. I was different animals, hunting and killing, and they seemed so real. When I woke up in the cell, there was so much pain. I thought I was losing my mind, or somebody was playing a sick game with me. What’s happening? He took off his shirt. What am I? Look at me! Even a traveling freak show would reject me. Did a drunken gypsy with a speech impediment curse me? If I need a haircut, do I go to a barber or a pet groomer? Lauren, the images of the blood, and the look on their faces, it was horrific. When it eats, oh, the taste of blood, swallowing flesh, it’s hard to describe.

That’s okay, so please don’t. I don’t think you’re cursed, replied Lauren, holding back the shudder attempting to run down her spine, and being glad her stomach was empty, so there was nothing else she had to hold back. What did you bring onto the bus that morning?

I was working on a late science project. I had a bunch of furs I bought at a fly tying store and some other animal skins. I was slapping together a biology project. It was a sad effort, but if I finished, I wouldn’t fail.

I think, when we came into this world, it recognized your pain, replied Lauren, "and it tried to heal you, like it healed Ryan. You remember, before the accident, he was barely able to walk, yet four days later he was standing. Then, a week later, you would never have realized he used to rely on a wheelchair. Well, when the explosion melted the plastic case, it also burned you, and the furs ended up in the mix. When this world tried to heal those injuries, it found dead skins attached to you, and thinking they belonged, it probably healed them. The magic in this world wanted you to live, so it healed you and everything attached. It may not have understood how you… worked, so I think it left that option up to you. I don’t believe you’re cursed, as I think this world blessed you."

So you’re trying to tell me this is like the movie where the guy steps inside the teleporter with a fly. But he programmed the computer to only materialize one body, so it merges the two together.

Sure, we can go with that.

"It can’t be a blessing, because I can’t control it."

A little while ago you did. It scared you when Alron reached for his sword, and the sensation of pain may have activated it. However, you didn’t attack, and you stopped it from doing that. Now listen. She looked deep into his eyes, Don’t fight it. Let it out. If you try to stop it, it’ll come out on its own, so embrace it and let it help you. To be honest, I’ll trade you my staff, title, and all the stuff that’s happening to me for your simple blessing. Okay?

No thanks, I look terrible in a dress.

She smiled, How would you know? Now, I have to go back to see what I can do for the others, so I’ll tell everybody to leave you alone. Are you going to be okay? He nodded. As she walked away, she turned back for one final glance, seeing him curled up asleep on the ground. She advised Gor, when done, to spoon-feed the liquid to Logan. After examining the splints Gingaar had placed on Eric, she watched Fodu stitch John’s back for a few minutes, and finally, she helped Gingaar treat the burns on Mirtza.

By this time, Alron had sent replacement Earth Guards to relieve the Dawnfalcons, and upon their arrival, they approached to provide an update. Lauren listened in on the good news, hearing nobody had entered the forest, and all was quiet.

Gathering the rest, she explained her thoughts on what had happened to Zack. When Alron voiced concerns, Lauren cut him off. "Then you explain the bloody wolf and bear prints in the jail, and the wounds on those men because they didn’t die by steel. He’ll be okay, as he understands it’s us, but don’t threaten him. She continued, Alron, I think we’ll be here a while. I doubt if they’ll check this deep in the woods, especially with no reason to look back here. Send out scouts to see what they can learn. Right now, time is on our side, so there is no need to rush anything. We only need to check to the south. The further we traveled that way, the more black-clad we found, so something is happening down here, and we need to find out what it is. Aaro, Bor, while the elves scout, camp security falls on your shoulders. Is that okay?"

Bor nodded in agreement, Earth Daughter, safe all will be.

Even though she had no reason to doubt him, Lauren also had no justification to believe him.

    Sky Elf Chapter 2

The next morning, Lauren was one of the last to rise. Gingaar was cleaning wounds and changing bandages. The other elves and dwarves were absent except Bor, who was at the small campfire drinking a hot beverage. As Zack sat by himself, Ryan was talking to an unresponsive Logan.

Bor, where are your brothers? asked Lauren.

Securing the perimeter, setting traps, looking for signs, setting false trails, and more they do. To the road, elf went. Earth Daughter, your friends…

"Speak your mind, as I already have enough of my own doubts. The thought that others may harbor similar will rob me of sleep."

Friend Zack, beast in boy, and Ryan. Trustworthy are they?

I don’t understand how Ryan avoided the capture, but I’m sure we’ll answer that mystery at some point. As for Zack, he controlled the beast once. When he learns to accept it’s a part of him, I imagine his control will be better. Just don’t threaten him and treat him like you always have.

As Earth Daughter desires, but concern for the injured, I have. Great is the damage, and seen worse I have not, unless in battle. To heal, all will need time.

Right now, we will take it one day at a time. I’m hoping Mother is making arrangements to protect and help us.

    Earth Daughter…

I told you not to hold back.

Understand I do not. Earth Daughter, belong to their sect, you do not, yet trust Mother you do. Why?

If a beast leaped out of the trees and attacked us, would you first check to see if your ax was sharp?

"No need to check, as sharp it is!"

When was the last time you sharpened it?

    Remember, I do not.

Has it not been months? Bor nodded. "It’s the same for me. I may not be able to touch Mother in the same way your ax brings you comfort, but I need to believe, as it’s all I have. We’ve come too far, seen too much not to believe, not to trust." Why won’t she talk to me? Standing, she headed towards the injured.

Ryan was having a one-sided conversation with Eric about football, and noticing that, Zack had engaged with Mirtza similarly. Gingaar was singing softly to Logan.

Your feet are all dirty! exclaimed Lauren, Where are your shoes?

Long has it been, and I do so miss the feeling of dirt between my toes, replied Gingaar, who was smiling.

    How’s Logan doing?

His breathing is strong, and his blood flow is good, but he does not move.

John was the first to wake, if you could call it that, when he attempted to roll from his stomach onto his back. The ensuing scream made Lauren leap towards him, and placing her hand over his mouth, his shrieks soon turned into sobs. Bringing his head to her lap, she rocked him back and forth, and massaging his temple, the crying eventually stopped.

Squeezing his eyes shut, he hoped it would help with the pain, What happened?

When those men found us, they captured five and... tortured you.

My back, the pain, why does it hurt so bad?

    They whipped you.

    How bad is it?

"It’s looking better, as Fodu has stitched it back together."

Where’s everybody? he said, remembering the dwarves and the elves.

Don’t worry about that right now. Everything is under control. I’ll mix up a salve for your back. Do you want anything for the pain?

Not right now, but maybe tonight, to help me sleep.

When Lauren opened the pouch, she noticed the supplies getting low. Crushing flowers and seeds into a thick pulp, she diluted it with water before returning to John. This will hurt, but it’ll help. Hearing him groan when she applied the mixture, his back and shoulders tensed, but eventually, with the pain increasing, his body forced him to sleep.

Arriving back at the camp, Hakk, Aaro, Fen, and Gor went to Bor where Lauren joined them. After Aaro had cleared a large section of ground, he picked up a stick to draw in the dirt. Here is our camp. To the north, a series of small stream valleys there are, all now dry, and the same to the south. A major game trail in the west runs north to south. Found as well, a large stream with many fish. Pools deep, rapids shallow, but cross it we can.

Found many animal tracks, Fen continued, but unseen were boot prints. Set are the intrusion traps, and check them often, to see if any wander these woods, we will.

To the east, the greatest threat; the black-clad traveled road, added Hakk. Between here and there, provide protection and cover, deadfalls will. Tomorrow, deploy pit traps and more we shall.

What about the elves? Will they not activate those traps?

No, Earth Daughter, replied Bor. First, this is forest, home to elf. Traps, taught to dwarf by elf, so spot any they will. Second, walk the paths not walked by others, Earth Guard does.

It was close to dark when Alron, Panry, and the Dawnfalcons returned. As all gathered around the small campfire, she advised them John had woken for a brief period.

Much activity we saw this day at the jailhouse, started Alron. Yesterday, the Dawnfalcons hitched and sent forth several wagons, so a great many tracks the soldiers tried to follow. They brought out the bodies and dumped them in unmarked graves. They have great disrespect for their own men.

The road sees much traffic this day, and patrols many we counted, continued Babartin. Many black-clad wear fresh wounds and look displeased.

I don’t understand, replied Lauren. What do you mean?

Their captains grow frustrated, began Alron, and they beat their own men. Lessons wrong taught to men undeserving. Ruthless are the black-clad, Earth Daughter.

The road shall no longer assist our travels, added Careel. Game trails we shall scout tomorrow.

    *******

Lauren woke to the smell of fried meats the next morning. Gor, I told you Gingaar and I would look after the meals.

He signaled for her to come closer, his thick baritone voice wrapping around her like a warm blanket on a cold morning, Homesick is Gor, and miss our morning chats I do. Made a hot meal for my brothers, and suggested the same, they did for you.

Lauren looked at the meal cooking on the fireless hot plate. How did you learn about the chests?

Explained all, Mirtza did. Strange is the chest, so much there, but not. Gor then handed her a plate of pancakes.

Inhaling the fresh smells, her face unexpectedly lost all color, The smell of food, it’ll alert others to our presence!

Defended by dwarf and elf, we are. Sample my talents, many may desire, but unexpected guests, none will arrive. Sit, be Lauren. To the ground, let your Earth Daughter mantle fall.

I need to check on the injured.

Purpose Gingaar seeks and finds. Help also do Ryan and Zack. Sit, eat, and talk with Gor. As she ate, she tried to speak about the current situation. Concerns for Earth Daughter, not Lauren. Bean juice or more syrup, answers only known by Lauren, which caused her to smile. When lifted is the weight from your shoulders, stand taller you do.

One more cup of bean juice, and then I must transform into my alter ego. After fifteen minutes, she stood and asked, Have the others eaten?

No, you first, they said. Care very much about you, all do. Send them to me.

As Lauren approached the wagon, she overheard Ryan and Zack describing an imaginary basketball game. Eric was coaching the Golden State Warriors, voiced by Ryan. The opposing team was the Washington Wizards, coached by Mirtza and voiced by Zack. After calling the end to the first half, she told them to go eat breakfast. Then she examined the two motionless coaches, and even though neither had opened their eyes, they looked relaxed. Checking on John, she tapped him on the shoulder to see if he would respond. If he did wake, she wanted to be present to muffle any screams.

Rolling onto his side, he bit down on his lip. To think I used to say quantum physics was painful. I’ll gladly battle any chalkboard without complaint. How does my back look?

Removing the blanket, Lauren noticed the wounds were healing faster than she thought they should. "While you may not believe it, you’ll live. You need to stay flat for a few more days, as I don’t want you pulling out any stitches. I’ll send Ryan or Zack over in a few minutes with breakfast for you." She then walked over to a tired-looking Gingaar, who was again kneeling next to Logan, caressing the bump on his head and singing softly.

Have you been up all night?

No, Earth Daughter, but I heard Logan moan, so such I tried to comfort.

With the bump now smaller, Logan was looking better, so she sent Gingaar to Gor as well. Returning to Eric, she looked at his one hand that needed immediate attention, but she lacked the medical knowledge. Going back to Gor, she picked up a plate of food and a cup of bean juice. Even though she said one of the boys would bring it over, she now needed a reason to talk to John. As he ate, she gave him an update on what the dwarves and elves were doing to safeguard them. She then explained what had happened to Zack, and how he had rescued them from the jail cell, but she had to repeat the story a second time, so he understood everything. When done eating, and the update ended, Lauren became strangely quiet.

    What’s wrong?

When Eric was tortured, they broke his ribs, arm, and hand. We set his arm, and it feels okay… but I don’t have any idea on what to do about his hand. If Zack and Ryan helped, can you have a look? I would prefer to let you rest and heal, and then she turned to gaze at the wagon, but I don’t think it can wait.

Get me something to bite on and tell them to come over.

Going over to Zack and Ryan, Lauren explained what needed to happen, and she then asked Gor to retrieve a wooden spoon. By the time they were back to John, he had inched himself up on all fours, but written on his face was pain, great pain: a volume equal to War & Peace. Before biting down on the wooden spoon, he asked them to be gentle. Raising him upright, he squeezed his eyelids shut with such intensity, she worried he would never open them again. With sweat forming on his forehead, his neck and back tensed, and suddenly tilting his head back, he bit down on the spoon, snapping it in two. Opening his mouth to scream, he fought it back, knowing it would be a beacon to their location. As Lauren picked up one end of the spoon, she placed it back in his mouth, which he clamped down on as if it was a lifeline. Carrying him over to the wagon, they let him get control of his breathing, before lowering his legs to the ground. With tears streaming down his face, he began concentrating, and regaining his composure, he looked down at Eric.

Please tell me I don’t look this bad! Seeing the bruised chest, pooling blood under the skin, and blackened bruises covering the body, John inched forward to examine the splintered arm, nodding in approval. Ryan and Zack, standing by his side, steadied him. The arm will be good. He may never throw a football again, but it’ll heal. Looking at the hand, the fingers all pointed in the wrong direction, and with blood vessels constricted, the colors were all incorrect. By this time, Aaro and Fodu had returned, and making their way over to the wagon, they saw the look on John’s face, as he methodically formed the words. Blood is not… flow… flowing to his fingers... right. They need... they need to... to be... be straightened. Fodu... Fodu... cut... a... plank. When his body tensed, John stopped talking, and he tried to absorb the fresh wave of pain flooding over him. Grabbing his shoulders, Zack and Ryan held him steady.

Breathe, John, deep breaths. Just breathe, coached Lauren. Do you want anything for the pain?

He shook his head, afraid of blacking out.

Aaro turned to Fodu, Brothers, blessed we are this day. Everybody looked at him, thinking he had lost his mind.

    What? asked Lauren.

The deep voice came out of the small dwarf, This day, welcomed to our clan, John Ironhouse. Hear me father, and welcome your new son. Lend him your strength. Aaro stood beside John, fighting the urge to slap his back. Look at me. Today, Ironhouse you are. Found in the mountain depths, the best ore is. Brother, dig deep. To save brother Eric, what do you need?

John smiled through the pain. Fodu... cut... a... plank from the... wagon. Trace... trace... Eric’s hand... hand... onto it. Drill... holes... holes so... we can... immobilize... his... his fingers. Now set me down quick! As Zack and Ryan lowered him to the ground, he maneuvered himself flat, but his breathing was shallow and rapid.

Lauren continued to coach him. Remember to breathe; deep slow breaths. Just keep calm and breathe. Don’t you dare pass out on me! It was both the passively commanding voice of the Earth Daughter and the scared voice of Lauren.

    Pain, something… something… for… the… pain. He needs… needs… needs… needs to be cut. I— I can’t… do… it, and he started crying.

Gingaar, get berries for the pain! Not too much. Fodu, carve the plank like John said. She knelt beside him, wiping the perspiration from his forehead, Fodu, we’ll need your skills once the brace is done. Gingaar, gather the medical kits and bring them over here, so that Fodu can see what he has to work with.

Bring my kit I will, added Fodu.

Moving to the back of the wagon, Aaro pulled out his ax to cut a board free, and trimming it to size, he handed it to Fodu. Climbing into the back, he raised Eric’s mangled hand to trace it onto the wood.

Jumping out, Fodu advised, Move Eric we cannot, but too high is the wagon wall.

Going to the side, Aaro climbed up onto the wheel, and grabbing the top of the sidewall, he ripped it from the wagon, throwing it to the side. Tell me should anything else be in your way.

Earth Mother, a half berry only I used.

Lauren looked down at John, He can’t drink it. Gingaar, you know plants, so find me a hollow reed or similar. She continued to coach, Just breathe. Deep slow breathing. Do you hear me? John, say something!

    Eric… is… going… to… be… pisseddddd.

    Why?

    I’m… his… little… brother… now.

Accepting the long hollow plant stem, Lauren placed it in the mug. Sip on this straw. Take it slow. Breathe, just rest right now.

As Fodu constructed the brace, Aaro picked up the harness from the stolen black-clad horses. Cutting off several pieces, after fastening them together, he searched for a rope. When he had both, he went to the back of the wagon and tried to throw the rope over a high thick branch.

Zack watched him try three or four times. Leave the end on the ground, and I’ll get it over the branch.

    Climb up that, you cannot.

Going out of focus, Zack seemed to be absent and present at the same time. A black bear then appeared, which grabbed the rope in its mouth, and after scampering up the tree, it carefully walked out onto the branch. Sons of a bit… He was in his human form, naked. Lauren! Gingaar! Well, everybody! Turn your backs! Aaro, lower me down!

The image of their multi-furred, multi-talented, naked friend brought a much-needed dose of levity to the tense scene, and after dropping to the ground, he collected his clothing before scurrying away. Man, I need to do something about this.

As he dressed, Aaro walked over to Zack, and slapping him on the back, he knocked him into the grass. Helping him up, he looked to the sky, This day, Pappy, blessed twice you are. Proclaimed this day, Zack Ironhouse is. A new son you have… or pet – or both? Discuss it later we shall. Zack glared at him. Brother, should any give you grief, tell me. Swift will be my justice. Occasionally, throw you a bone, and Aaro smiled, we may.

Ironhouse, beats the hell out of the other names they called me at school. I have to admit that this family can kick ass.

When Fodu announced the brace was ready, Aaro tied the leather harness to his rope and walked over to John and Lauren. Secured in this, the pain will be less. Carried to the tree, from here you will be. See all you will, once raised. Understand, do you, brother?

Aaro, it’s my back that’s hurt, not my ears.

Filled with spirit you are; the spirit of Ironhouse.

After John had inched up on all fours, Zack and Ryan carried him to the harness, which Aaro fastened. Pulling on the rope, they hoisted him into an upright position. With the spoon clenched firmly in his teeth, it absorbed the painful screams his tortured body wished to broadcast. When suspended in the air, Zack and Fodu maneuvered the wagon to provide John with the best vantage point, tying the rope off to the closest tree.

Just breathe. Deep slow breaths. Take it slow. Calm, calm, calm. Lauren continued to coach, Think about math problems, which made him attempt a painful smile.

Brother, are you fine? asked Aaro.

I’m a freaking pain-filled piñata, he cried out. Let’s get on with it. Aaro, grab Eric’s arm above the wrist. Fodu will have to set the fingers – but don’t let him pull on the arm, just the fingers. Between the medication and the suspension, the pain became bearable, allowing John to maintain his concentration to give the vital instructions. Now, Fodu, tie Eric’s wrist to the brace. Tight enough so he can’t move it, however, don’t cut off his circulation. Okay, Fodu, Eric’s thumb looks all right. With twenty-seven bones in the hand, fifteen are located in the fingers. There are twelve bones behind those, but they look uninjured. One-by-one, pull on each until everything snaps into place. Start with his small finger. When it seems like everything has lined up, feel along the bones to make sure there are no bumps or divots. After you set each one, tie it down so that Eric can’t move it. Can I have another sip of that pain juice?

Raising the cup, Lauren saw the perspiration dripping from his forehead. Gingaar, get one of Mirtza’s chest to stand on, so we can keep the sweat out of his eyes.

As Fodu continued resetting the bones, he listened for any additional instructions, and in a short period, all the fingers were straight and secured.

Aaro then sent Gor to relieve Bor, Tell all, we have two new Ironhouse. A double shift Fen and Hakk now have.

John took a deep breath, "Okay, Fodu, do you see the two middle fingers with the large pools of blood? The veins look compromised or ruptured. Make a slight cut into the skin, but don’t nick the vein, as we only need to ease the pressure. The vein should heal on its own once the blood flows. The first to come out will be the sequestered fluids, and they should just seep out after the initial… squirt. Don’t bandage the wound until we see small pulses of blood, as that will show the flow is restored. Good, now bandage it and do the same with the second. John’s eyes flared open, Pain juice, pain juice, pain juice!"

Raising the mug, Gingaar also wiped the sweat from his forehead.

At that moment, Bor came walking out of the forest. Brother John, update me. Of suspense, I have no need, but work for you it does. Brother Zack, rough you look. The sight of blood, can you bear it? Or howl instead, do you want to?

He glared at Bor, sensing the beast within.

Brother, now you are Ironhouse, so need a thicker skin you will, but many choices you have. Brother Eric, short he looks, but tower over me he should. Advise of brother big or brother flat.

We’re almost done. John continued, Fodu, do you see the large bruise in the middle of Eric’s hand? Nick the surface to let the blood out but don’t cut too deep. After doing so, a small pool of red drained from the hand until nothing remained. "Now massage along the bone, as the vein appears to be restricting the blood flow. Gradually new blood seeped from the wound. Now stop! Wait. Good. His body should do the rest on its own. Bandage it but not too tight or loose. Now get me down, now! The composure maintained for so long, like his pain juice, was now gone, For the love of God, mother, country, whatever, cut me down, now! CUT THE DAMMED ROPE!"

Zack, Ryan, grab John! When the two had him firmly held by the armpits, Bor rushed to the tree with his great ax in hand to cut the rope.

Lauren, the pain; get me something, anything. Lauren, help me, please…

She dropped down beside him, afraid he was about to scream, Gingaar, something strong. Now! We have asked too much.

Racing to the leaf pouch, she grabbed whatever she could find, returning with three red berries in one hand and a single blue berry in the other. For such, this is what remains. One is too strong, yet the other is too weak.

Convulsing in pain, with John shaking so bad, Lauren worried leaves would fall from the trees. Grabbing the blue berry, she pushed it into his mouth and rubbed his throat to ease it down. MOTHER, make this right! she screamed to the sky, I have done like you’ve asked. Now! Now is when I call upon you! No longer do you get to watch. YOU WILL PARTICIPATE! Refuse and I’ll challenge you, and you know what I’m capable of. Turn away from me now, and I’ll turn my vengeance to you. YOU WILL MAKE THIS RIGHT! Lauren collapsed limp to the ground, and John, rolling onto his back, surrendered to the pain, passing out.

Fodu kneeled down beside them, Breathe both do. Brother John, consumed by pain he is. Earth Daughter, of what happened, understand I do not.

Bor looked to Aaro, Heard by the clouds, Earth Daughter was, and others also may have. Go, warn elf and dwarf, and then they carried John and Lauren to the bedrolls. For the remainder of the day, Gingaar oversaw the camp, and later that night, Bor ordered the others to get rest, including those who still slept. Insisting he would watch the camp, after lighting a fire, he began pacing. He questioned the black sky, the trees, the stars, and the ground, but none answered.

    Gingaar did, Bor, SHUT UP!

    Sky Elf Chapter 3

An hour before the first sun rise, Fodu woke Bor, sending him out to relieve Aaro. It was after this when Alron, Panry, and Hakk entered from the south.

Explain that which happened the day past.

Fodu only had a few hours of sleep, as his concern for Lauren, John, and Eric had woken him six hours earlier. When sure all rested comfortably, he had offered to watch the camp so that Bor could get some rest. To have Alron walk in, demanding answers as if he was a prisoner was wrong. As well, he was both unimpressed and certain the elf already knew what had happened. A fine day it is, but hidden is the bean juice pot. To find it, where should I look?

Explain that which happened the day past, repeated Alron.

Go mate with a troll. Demand answers from Ironhouse, you cannot. In Fodu’s opinion, only Lauren could do that, and Alron served her.

Something happened, and of such, I need to understand. After corralling everybody, excluding Lauren, Alron began questioning them about the incidents from the previous day, but quiet responses only made him louder, resulting in repeated questions.

Sleeping under the wagon, in a pile of blankets and bedrolls, the never-ending questions entered Zack’s dreams, causing him to lose focus.

Even though the loud conversation had woken Lauren, she only sat up and took notice when quiet embraced the camp. Wandering over to Zack, she scratched him behind the ear, Good boy, make the noisy elf shut up. Socks, I like this side of you.

Looking up, the wolf shook its head. Me no like that name. ("Shut up!")

She then walked over to the gathered crowd, searching for the hot bean juice, but found none. He who is most capable, boil water to bring forth the nectar of rock stars, as my brother calls it. Alron, climb down off your testosterone-filled pedestal and join us on the ground. Sitting down on a stump in front of the fire, Lauren began tapping the mug on a rock, but Alron kept his focus on the wolf. She looked at him, I suggest you find a more friendly way to ask questions. I think you remind him of somebody, somebody he doesn’t like. I believe you met those men he silenced. Let’s use your nice voice. Then she looked at Zack. It’s okay, Socks, so go chase a squirrel.

Lacking interest in the suggested task, Zack was more captivated by quiet. Laying his head on his paws, he never moved his eyes from the elf.

Alron ensured his voice was polite and soft. Hakk, please go relieve Gor. After double-timing it into the forest, twenty minutes later, Gor returned. I need answers, advised Alron, in a quiet voice. The price for such is hot bean juice, so can you please satisfy Earth Daughter’s thirst? He then turned to the rest of the group, Gingaar, can you please start? Looking at the ground, she was quiet, afraid to meet his gaze. He turned to Ryan, who was counting stones around the fire pit. Fodu, please advise of that which happened yesterday. After a brief update, he asked, Of such events, did you omit anything?

Much. Call reinforcements you should, if required is more information. Fodu was still angry with Alron, but he enjoyed watching him sweat under the wolf’s gaze. He knew they had done nothing wrong, and if not for Lauren’s actions, Eric might have lost his hand, and secretly, he hoped to trigger an interesting response between the two.

Lauren finished her first mug, . Alron, calm down. Zack, get dressed, or I’ll pour your mug of bean juice into a bowl. Gor, thank you very much. Now, since nobody asked, I have a terrible headache, so I don’t need this crap right now. She held her mug out for a refill, Alron, you seem to have, as we say where I’m from, your panties in a knot. Why are you so upset?

The day past, with Mother you talked, more specifically, challenged or threatened her? You demanded from Mother, raised your voice, and tried to Invoke her.

Lauren looked confused and perplexed, What?

You did that which must not be done. Mother does not serve us, and to demand from Mother is forbidden. He knew she had no comprehension of the particular act, but he worried, if too lenient, she might mistake his concern as compassion for her friends, wrapping herself in a misunderstood embrace of kindness. Needing to challenge her, he wanted to find out where her focus was, and what she was thinking. He knew they needed her to help lead, getting them out of this mess, and to help save her friends and Mother’s children. The Earth Mother had warned of Lauren testing him, and she had advised him to meet her mistakes with civility, making sure a blaze of doubt did not extinguish the fire of hope. However, he needed to be sure of who sat in front: the Earth Daughter, guided by her heart, or Lauren, guided by her head. If it was Lauren, her concern would focus on her friends, but if she cared for both, then the Earth Daughter was still with him.

There was a smoldering angst in Lauren’s eyes, but staring at the ground, nobody saw it. She was neck-deep in one of the worst situations imaginable. Gingaar, Fodu, please go check on the injured. Gor, fetch me Mirtza’s pipe. Panry, go guard a tree. Accepting the pipe, she packed the bowl and reached down to the fire for a burning ember. Lifting her gaze from the ground, Alron saw the anger in her eyes: the eyes of the Earth Daughter. Her words were hard like flint, the edges sharp, If you’re going to get upset at me because I did wrong, then you’re going to get really good at being mad at me. Find me a route south, and help me get through those damned mountains. Maybe, once on the other side, we will find the children, or Mother will fire me. Alron, while I am unable to command you, I believe your part of the oath is to protect, and that includes my friends. I’m doing what I said I would, so be the damned Earth Guard and protect! Now, if you don’t mind, I want to go visit my mighty army and change their bloodied bandages. Standing, she left without looking back.

Whispering a prayer to Mother, Alron walked over to Panry, who had a confused look. Earth Daughter tried to Invoke. Such was right to teach her of the wrong.

"To Invoke, Earth Daughter did not try, as such experience she lacks. Angered and upset, she did what any child shall: scream for attention. She complains to Mother, and mayhap that is her right, but between Mother and Earth Daughter, such shall remain. My job is not to teach Earth Daughter; it is to keep her on the path, so her focus wanders not."

    You test Earth Daughter?

Like the black-clad test us, so our mission becomes more difficult. We need to find a route south to find Mother’s children. Aaro and Bor, both we need to talk with.

    *******

Around noon, after Gor prepared a pot of tea for Lauren, she took the steaming mug and Mirtza’s pipe to the back of the camp. Sitting down on a deadfall, she tried to reach out to Mother. However, the thoughts of Logan, Eric, John, and Mirtza, all motionless, muddied her thoughts.

Approaching her, Ryan asked if she wanted company.

Lauren’s frustration echoed in her voice, in more ways than one, I don’t know what I want. I don’t know what anybody wants. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Lastly, I don’t know what to do about the injured. This isn’t what I signed up for, and it sucks.

"Yeah, it’s crazy. It shouldn’t be happening, but it is, and you can’t change it. Are things happening as they’re supposed to? It’s anybody’s guess. John thinks there’s a divine design or presence here. Maybe there is, as you helped us get this far—"

Then she blurted out her biggest concern, What happens if Logan dies?

"My answers will only cause you pain, as I lived with similar answers to a different question for over a year. You don’t want me to explain those questions or answers. If I can do anything for you, please let me know."

Before he turned, Lauren called out, I realize the accident wasn’t your fault. I know I blamed you and that was wrong. Here and now, with what happened when Samantha died, that’s so far from my mind. Logan, Eric, John, we’re stuck here in these woods when we actually need a hospital. I can’t go back, and I can’t see what’s ahead. What do I do Ryan? What the hell do I do!

"Anything I say will seem like a lie, as I don’t ... Days ago, we wondered if we would ever see them again, or if we would arrive too late. I have no idea on what tomorrow will bring, and I won’t tell you lies under a false pretense: like everything will be okay, as you’ll just end up…" hating me again. I think we have defied the odds in getting this far, and while it seems like a long shot, if I had the money, I would bet we get out of this. I don’t know how, or when, or what will happen, but I have to believe that it’ll all work out.

    That isn’t enough.

"I was in a hospital bed for a year, embracing that single thought. There were tears, pain, cursing, more… and nightmares that still haunt me to this day. Eventually, it all worked out, I think, maybe not… I don’t know either. When it seems like there’s nothing left, there’s always something: hope. At this moment, positive thoughts will do more than negative ones. I realize that won’t comfort you, but you need to believe in it; I just don’t know what that is." Ryan headed back to the camp.

Realizing like her, he had no answers, she avoided the group the entire day. The whole thing reminded her of Mirtza’s chests; while having contents, she lacked a trigger to materialize them. Getting dark, she stood and headed back to camp. Gor had offered to make her a meal to eat, but while hungry, it was not for food. Declining, she laid out a bedroll beside the wagon, and staring up at the stars, she thought of those things she should not, until fatigue won the battle, and her eyelids, heavy with sleep, closed.

    *******

Lauren woke the next morning to the aroma of breakfast cooking. Even though still early, the others slept, but she was positive the intoxicating smells would soon break them free of their dreams or nightmares. She sat down with Gor, I told you Gingaar and I would look after the meals.

Agree all did; when breakfast waits, in a better mood you are.

Gor, please don’t ever change. Thank you. The last few days, I don’t understand what’s happening. I know everybody’s tired of me saying that, but seriously, what am I supposed to do?

Sit and eat breakfast, Lauren should.

As she did, she chatted about nothing in particular, but after fifteen minutes, the sounds of others stirring reminded her that she was not Lauren, and the Earth Daughter thanked him before going to check on everybody. Heading over to John first, she gently shook him, Hey, how do you feel today?

    I breathe, therefore I am.

    The pain?

    Present and accounted for.

Walking over to Logan, she saw Gingaar, her feet still bare, asleep beside him, and it thrilled her to see the diminished goose egg. Shaking her awake, she told her to get a meal. Next, stopping off at the wagon, she examined Mirtza and Eric who were looking better, as the color was returning to their injured areas.

The day was quiet until noon when alarm whistles sounded, and in the distance, dogs barked. Bor came running out of the forest, Earth Daughter, hidden are the tracks, not the scents.

Move the wagon, can we? asked Aaro.

No, the injured aren’t stable enough.

Dogs? I can help with that, began Zack. Aaro, bring my clothes when you return to the forest. I’ll find you. Going to the edge of the camp, his profile lost focus. Once again, there was something and nothing there. Then there was only a pile of clothes with a gigantic wolf standing on them, which bolted into the woods until it found the dogs – all six.

Fresh. ("NO! Lead them away!") Me hungry. ("NO! Lead them away!"). Easy. ("If you kill, more will come, and you’ll put my friends in danger.") More good. Fresh. ("NO! You will lead them away!") Hungry. ("Lead them away, and we’ll hunt tonight!") You lie. ("We’ll hunt bad man.") Good. ("Lead them far away.) The wolf stalked the dogs, getting close enough to charge. Blindsiding the first, when canine instincts engaged, they forgot about the scent and instead, chased after the wolf running to the north. (Slow down, or you’ll lose them.")

The wolf made its scent harder to follow by using water, fallen trees, and anything else it could. A few times, it stopped to change into an eagle to increase the distance, and once back on the ground, yelped to get their attention. After five or six miles, it had led them far enough from the camp that Zack felt safe to stop the chase. Finding a tall tree, they waited until the dogs saw them before going to the other side. After a minute, a different animal emerged and ran around the base of the tree several times, before ascending into the top branches. While the scent was the same, the shape was different, so when the handlers caught up with the dogs after two hours, seeing them barking at a tree, they were confused, as there was nothing in it except one lone squirrel.

The squirrel watched the handlers beat the dogs, hearing them yelp and seeing the fear in their eyes. ("Tonight we hunt bad men.") Me like.

After the handlers had dragged the dogs far enough away, the squirrel jumped through the trees, making its way back south. Several miles later and one narrow escape with a forest hawk, the squirrel climbed down to the forest floor, and the wolf was back, which continued south. Having spent long hours with the dwarves, Zack’s alter ego knew each scent. It seemed unbelievable such a large animal could be so quiet, but identifying one smell, they stealthily headed towards a large deadfall. Feeling the hot breath on his neck, Aaro reached for the bag in front and placed it behind him.

    "Thanks for the clothes.
