    His Shot - Savina Joyce

    Chapter One

    Phaedra

Phaedra swapped out her camera lens and laid it in the grass. Family photo shoots were her favorite, and this one was no exception. The new parents had chosen Sussex County Sunflower Maze for their pictures. It was perfect.

They were like a family you would see in a picture frame. Mother, father, toddler son, and baby daughter. It was beautiful. Normally, when Phaedra had a family photo shoot, the kids were tyrants. Not these children. They were angels.

It made Phaedra long for her own family. Someday, she would start a family of her own. For now, building her photography career satisfied her.

Phaedra completed the photo shoot in record time. Family shoots usually took her hours to complete, so she had scheduled her day that way. Wrapping up early meant she had her afternoon free. Once she sent the family on their way, she wandered the sunflower fields, taking pictures of the flowers. She rarely got the chance to just wander around and take pictures of anything she chose. Ironic, because that was why she became a photographer in the first place. But she had to pay the bills.

Feeling inspired, Phaedra set up her tripod and turned the camera on herself. She did her own live version of the craft store challenge. The photographer surrounded herself with sunflowers framing her face. When the timer went off she laughed, capturing the joy in the frame. This would be the perfect photo to send to her father. He had always supported her dream and would love to see her so happy. If even one of her photos brought a smile to his face, she was on the right path.

Once her impromptu photo shoot was completed, Phaedra headed home. She lived in a nice apartment in a multi-family home in Stamford, Connecticut. It was a long drive, but most of her clientele was in or around New York. It paid the bills. It might be cheaper to take the train, but Phaedra enjoyed the driving. She got to see all kinds of interesting people and places that inspired her.

Back at her place, Phaedra was greeted by the angry yowling of her cat. The cat wasn’t waiting at the door, of course. River never greeted her eagerly. She liked to voice her displeasure from a high vantage point.

On my way, boss, Phaedra said.

She hunted through the house. The sound of a howling cat led her to the kitchen where River perched on top of the fridge. The cat sneered down at Phaedra.

What have I done to upset you this time?

That cat jumped down and ran for her bowl. Phaedra headed towards the bowl and looked at it. The bowl was full, but the food had been eaten in the center, so the bottom of the bowl was visible. Phaedra sighed and rolled her eyes. River was impossible, as most cats were. Phaedra bent down and shook the bowl so that the food formed an even layer. The cat happily began eating.

Phaedra laughed to herself and looked in the fridge for something to eat. Leftover takeout would have to do. Phaedra grabbed the Chinese food from the fridge and put it on a plate. She was just going to eat it cold when she got the feeling that she was being watched. She looked down to see River giving her a disapproving glare.

Phaedra sighed and put the food in the microwave. For a cat that never had cooked food, River had strong opinions about it. As the food was heating up, Phaedra could hear her stomach growling. She totally lost track of time when she had her camera in her hand. This was her first meal of the day.

    Chapter Two

    Logan

Logan looked at his email again. He couldn’t believe it. The higher-ups were finally considering him for partner. He had been at this firm for years. Logan was starting to think that his time would never come. Yet here he was with a partner inquiry.

Straight out of law school, Logan had gotten a job at James, Ridge, and James. Since he was neither a James nor a Ridge, he had to work his way up from the bottom. Logan had finally gotten his own office with a receptionist, but he wanted to make partner. That was the goal of most lawyers. He didn’t practice criminal law; corporate law put him in front of more than enough criminals for his taste. It was nice that all his hard work was finally paying off.

Mr. Thomas? Do you need anything else?

Logan looked up to see Shelly, his receptionist, poking her head in the door.

Not at all, Shelly. You and Jim have a good weekend.

Shelly smiled and waved goodbye. Her fiancé Jim was waiting for her at her desk. He grabbed her hand, and they walked out of the office together. Logan smiled as he watched them leave.

Logan had been so focused on his career that he hadn’t spent much time on his personal relationships. He had the occasional date from time to time, but he always felt that relationships were a distraction. No one wanted to come second to his career, and Logan couldn’t blame them.

Logan couldn't linger too long at the office. He had an appointment to get a haircut. The firm was having their yearly headshots taken for their website. He didn't see the point in the headshots. None of these corporations really seemed to care what their lawyers looked like as long as they kept the company’s interests in mind. But if Logan want to advance his career he had to play the game. And looking the part would do just that.

Logan headed for the elevator. He was hoping it would be empty. It was the end of the day on a Thursday. Hopefully all the chatterboxes had gone home. He just wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone today. He lucked out. There was a young assistant in the elevator with headphones on. A lot of people didn't like this new disconnected generation, but it really came in handy when you needed quiet time.

When Logan reached the ground floor, he hailed a cab. When he made partner, he might spring for a driver. Logan made plenty of money now, but he just
