About this ebook

Becca -- a Halloween-hating, awkward twenty-four-year-old -- is once again dreading the approach of fall when she's told that her best friend’s sister, Amy, is back in town. Amy is charismatic, smart, and successful, and Becca has been nursing feelings for her since high school, when they were on opposite ends of the social spectrum. Now that Amy’s come out as a lesbian, though, she’s theoretically within shot -- if only Becca can muster up the courage.

Unbeknownst to Becca, her best friend has already let Amy know she’s single. When Amy texts her, hoping to reconnect, Becca jumps at the chance to go to the local cafe with her. It’s not a date, she tells herself, but part of her suspects it is.

What follows is hours of reminiscing as they each bring up things the other has forgotten, or never knew in the first place. Will Becca be able to overcome her insecurity and follow up on her suspicions? Or will she let the opportunity slip through her fingers again?

It didn’t help that orange was really not her colour.

Of all the things she hated most about the fall, though, Halloween had to be the worst. It was tacky and expensive for people without kids, she thought, and she never felt good in any of the sexy nurse costumes her friends pressured her into. One year she’d gone to a party as a witch, green face paint and all, but even that had been less fun than she’d expected.

Becca sighed. It was late September, the days just starting to curl back into themselves, and she was holding yet another cup of coffee for the sole purpose of keeping her hands warm. Beside her Dani, her best friend, was skipping along the sidewalk.

I’m so excited for Halloween this year, Dani said. Mom put me in charge of costumes for all the nieces and nephews, and it’s going to be so much fun trying to figure out which costume will suit which kid—

Why don’t the kids just choose their own costumes? Becca asked.

Because there’s got to be a theme, duh. Dani rolled her eyes. We always take holiday photos—and you know how much my mother likes her photo albums.

Becca nodded. It was true; Dani had
