Still, he’s creative, good at thinking through facts, and has a wicked smart best friend, Jinju. Together, they might make great detectives after all!

Thanksgiving is full of traditions at the Holmes house. Food, family, an annual poker game, and Great Uncle Archie teasing Ratio until he runs to his room crying. This year will be different! Mom suspects that Uncle Archie cheats at poker and she's hired Ratio and Jinju to figure out how to expose him. But that won't be easy. The two detectives/best friends are in the middle of a huge fight and barely speaking to one another.

Author

Horatio Holmes

Horatio Holmes, author of the Ratio Holmes series, has grown a lot since his days at Longtides Elementary. Since then he learned to play the bugle (badly), worked as a writer of competitive mathematics problems, even acted in Hamlet playing the very character for who he was named. In other ways, he’s still the same as he ever was: an avid reader, a pursuer of justice, and someone who likes his hot dogs with mustard.

    Chapter 1

    Family Tradition

I really like Thanksgiving. First, I like fall, the colors and the cool air. And the idea of Thanksgiving is pretty cool too. Plus, turkey is good, and stuffing is awesome, and pumpkin pie is one of the perfect foods.

This year was going to be even more fun because Jinju’s family was coming over to celebrate with us. They don’t really have Thanksgiving in their native culture, but now that they’ve lived in the United States for a few years, they’re starting to get into it. So Mom invited them to enjoy the meal with us, and it will be great to have Jinju over.

We expected kind of a full house. Phelia and Mom and Dad and me, that’s four. Jinju and her parents are three. Of course, Grandma Amy comes over each year too. That’s my mom’s mom. And Aunt Vye, who’s mom’s sister, and her husband Uncle Marc and my cousin Keith. Keith is seventeen, so we don’t really play together much, but he teaches me some cool stuff from time to time. Like, one year, my first curse word, which got both of us into a lot of trouble. But it’s all the more reason to like Thanksgiving.

That’s eleven people, and if we stopped there, it would be perfect. But it wasn’t going to be eleven, it was going to be twelve. I don’t mind the number twelve, it’s the person twelve I wish wouldn’t come. My great uncle Archie. He’s Grandma Amy’s brother, and he never had a wife or kids of his own. I can pretty much guess why.
