Is This Love - La’Phiffaney Morgan

    Prologue

Truth sat in the cold wet basement shivering in only a thin laced maroon colored Chanel night gown. Her hair was freshly done. She always booked a nine o'clock a.m. appointment with Jessica at Branded Dominican hair salon every Friday. Her nails and feet were freshly done with white French tips. She took pride in her appearance, more than most women. Although she had the body of a goddess and was well kept, it didn't hide the scars and bruises on her face and body that was caused by a dark part in her life. Her eyes traveled down to the fresh scares she had on her writs.

How did I get here, and what's that God-awful smell? She mumbled to herself. She knew in her heart her husband D'Kane had went too far. She tried to recall what happened before she became conscious in the cold wet basement. Her mind drifted off to the events that led her in this dingy smelly basement.

    ***********

    Chapter 1

Truth stood in her bathroom mirror staring herself in the eyes. The woman she saw was stunning but empty. Her phone vibrating on the marble counter pulled her out of her trance she was deep in. Secrets name came across the screen, her stomach tightened. She never had a great relationship with her sister, the vibe was awkward. She answered the phone with an attitude.

What's up bitch? Truth voice blasted through the phone.

Damn hoe you could at least try to sound happy to hear from me. Secret said with hurt in her voice.

Secret what do you want? I have a hot date with my man something you don’t know anything about. Truth said flatly. Secret’s blood boiled at the comment Truth made. She lived a normal life, married with three kids. But life she lived wasn’t enough, she wanted everything Truth had. She felt she deserved it, it was hers first.

Ima let that slide sis. We need to grab lunch tomorrow. Secret tried to hide the fire in her voice.

Ok but now is not an appropriate time. I got to hurry up and get dressed girl. My man has been mad at me, so I got to smooth things over. She told her sister Secret. The lies ate at her throat. She knew she was in for a hell of a night.

Alright bitch hit me later, I love yo black ass. Secret said.

Bye bitch, I'm about to suck the skin off my nigga dick tonight. Truth said. She hung up dying laughing at the comment she just made. There was no way she was going to continue living a lie.

All of a sudden Truth felt butterflies in the bottom of her stomach and paid it no mind. She got them when she was nervous or something bad was going to happen. Being that she had to come out about something her heart wanted. Being nervous was an understatement, her life really depended on it.

She put lotion on and sprayed D'Kane's favorite perfume, Yellow Jeans on her neck, wrist, and in between her legs. Truth made her way to the bathroom once more to look herself over. She had a stance like a stallion. The shape she had made anybody double look. Im a bad bitch she said out loud as she walked towards the staircase.

On her way down the stairs and stopped in the middle of the staircase. She took in the sight of the home they had built over the years. All their accomplishments hung on the far side of the wall. They didn’t have any children, so they were very proud of what they had done. She was going to miss it but she had her mind made up and was ready to walk away from it all. She made it down the stairs to check on the dinner she had prepared.

Truth walked into the kitchen to check on the gumbo that was on the stove. It was one of her favorite dishes to cook. She opened the pot and the smells of spices and seafood hit her right in her face. She tasted the savory sauce that was on the spoon. Her lips melted to the taste.

She started to stir to the sounds of Amerie, All I Have that came from her iPhone. She felt everything that she was saying. She felt like the song was made for her. She sang along with her to the top of her lungs.

"All I have to give is one last kiss I know it not enough" The music suddenly faded off and a text came through from an unknown number. She picked it up and opened it with a smile on her face.

    Unknown- what’s up ma?

Truth-Not shit wyd? I really miss you.

Unknown-I miss you more. When are you coming over?

Truth- Soon as possible. I gotta handle something’s with D’Kane. It’s time we tell him. So, I need to make sure things are perfectly fine, and that we are on good terms before I tell him.

Unknown-I been ready to tell the nigga ma! You know I love you.

Truth- We need to have a serious talk when I come over. I gotta go baby, see you soon.

    Unknown- Only us?

Truth- We all we got baby.

She erased the text messages and hooked her phone up to her pill speaker. She let the music blast while she stood in the middle of her kitchen taking in everything her and D’Kane worked hard for. They lived in a 1.2-million-dollar home. They both were wealthy.

She was a lawyer one of the best, if not the best in Chicago, Illinois. She also had a side to her many knew nothing about. She took the backseat of her father's drug ring. She handled all the numbers and shipments. She was by far sweet and innocent she could hold her own. She was raised as a princess to the public eye, but to her family she was the best of both worlds.

She started to set the dinner table with the best crystal they had. She didn’t have time to go see her boo with another black eye or any new bruises from her husband. He had changed over the years, but the past couple of days he had been in over drive. She started filling the dishes up with gumbo. She sat the salad and bread on the table and filled the glasses with a bottle of Chateau Margaux.

She looked around and smiled. She thought she did very well for herself. The candles and rose petals that filled the walkway from the door to the kitchen were a plus. The light reflected perfectly off the giant Swarovski crystal chandelier that hung from the ceiling. The gold that trimmed the walls and the base boards glistened.

She stood there looking elegant from head to toe. She was ready to give up the abusive draining marriage she was in. Her heart belongs to someone else. She still had to play her role until the time was right to let him know she was done. Her heart raced at what could happen when she did let him know.

    Chapter 2

Aghhh! Deceit moaned. He was trying his best to shake the black cloud that was wrapped around his soul. As his mind drifted away all he could think of is the actions that put him there, holding on to life…..

Yo I need to holla at you Kane, it's bout that time. Deceit left a voicemail on Kane's phone. Deceit was trying not to get frustrated with Kane about not running the shipment on time. Even though it's his own fault for running low. Deceit paced the floor back and forth the whole forty-five minutes it took D’Kane to return his call. He was missing so much money. The boys by Garfield Park, and the South Side, been ready to re-up.

Deceit was nothing like D’Kane. Even though he graduated high school, his life was always living the fast life. He was smart as they came. He used that to help him build the empire he worked so hard for. Being in the game was all he knew. He never wanted to be anything more than a kingpin. He had made millions of dollars and owned a chain of establishments. He never wanted for anything. He chose to stay in the game for the rush he got.

He was a sight to see. He stood six feet even. His butter brown complexion was complimented by his jet black curls that were cut close in a taper fade. The way he carried himself oozed confidence. He stood in a plain red Gucci v-neck and some acid wash Armani jeans and some fresh all white forces. To be in his presence was a blessing to most.

His phone rang. Kane was on the screen, he picked up in a hurry. Yo, what the fuck is up. Deceit yell in the phone. Nigga watch your mouth before I rip your tongue out. Kane calmly said. Something about it sent chills up Deceit's spine. It was hard for anybody to get away with the disrespect but his brother was a exception. He knew D’Kane was stressed and been acting strange lately. The way he was acting was off but he just shook it off.

What's up bro you good? He asked while rubbing his hand over his face to wipe the sweat off his nose. He didn't know why he was shook up but he knew Kane wouldn't hurt him. Everyone feared D’Kane in the streets but glorified him at work for being one of the best surgeons there was in the city. He knew he held a special place in his brother’s heart. He thought he could do anything and get away with it.

Yeah, I'm fine bro, I got something to show you. D'Kane said into the phone. Well, you know where I sleep nigga come through, been waiting on yo ass all day anyway. He said sarcastically. You got that? Deceit asked his brother. Hell yeah and much more, I'll be by asap. D'Kane said as he hung up the phone on Deceit.

Deceit had no idea what Kane was referring to when he said much more but he was excited to find out. He sat down to roll two fat Dutch’s filled with some moon rock. One for him one for Kane. He looked around his home. It was built for a king. He sat on the 13th floor overlooking the Michigan River. His eleven-foot glass windows made the scenery worth living the life he lived every day. He wanted nothing but the best and the best is what settled for.

Buzz! His phone went off. It was a text from
