    CHAPTER 1

BERT ELBOWED STANLEY causing him to drop his controller.

    Hey! That’s not fair!

Who said anything about fair? Bert laughed as his soldier ran behind a wall and started shooting.

I thought we were on the same team.

William’s voice yelled over Stanley’s headphones. You’re on my team. We’re supposed to capture Bert’s flag. Now move it, Stanley.

Fingers on the controller, Stanley rounded a building only to be gunned down. The announcement Respawning in 10 started the countdown to when his character would reappear in the game.

    Who got me?

    Polly laughed.

What? I didn’t think you were still online.

That’ll teach you boys to underestimate me.

I agree with Stanley. Polly, you said you were dropping offline to do your homework.

Oh, Billy. I couldn’t just go and leave Bert to defend our flag all by himself. Again she laughed.

Bert kicked Stanley’s shoe and motioned to the television. The countdown had completed and his character stood back up only to be gunned down again.

Oh come on! Stanley threw down the controller. I think I’ve got some homework to do too. I’d better get home.

But my mom made pozole tonight because we were going to do our homework together. You can’t go home now.

Stanley! Stanley, you’re about to respawn. You can’t leave the game now.

Stanley turned off his controller. Player Mongo has left the game, appeared on the screen.

Fine, we’ll pick this up tomorrow. William’s player, Einstein, also disconnected.

Bert turned off the game console. They both picked up the game, the chip bags, and went to the kitchen. The smell of spicy pork cooking in a large pot greeted them.

Hey boys, dinner will be ready in about half an hour. Why don’t you two go wash up and help me set the table?

    Ok, Mrs. Dominguez.

Luz, please. I don’t know why you insist on being so formal. I should start calling you Mr. Kodluboy.

Mom, isn’t it Zita’s turn to set the table? I did it last night.

She’s got a big test tomorrow and she’s studying. Now go on, both of you. The table isn’t going to set itself.

The two went and washed up. Laughter from Zita’s bedroom caught Stanley’s attention.

She isn’t studying. She’s on the phone I'll bet.

Oh, I know that. You know that. Zita knows that. But I guarantee you that if we tell me, mom, she’ll go in there and she’ll be studying. There’s a squeaky board right in front of her door and every time I’ve tried to catch her, I step on that board and she’s doing what she’s supposed to. She’s been lucky to never get caught. I think she made that board squeak like that on purpose.

Maybe we can find a hammer and nail it down better so it doesn’t squeak.

The two laughed and headed back to set the dining room table.

Ever since last semester Bert and Stanley had been spending time playing online games with William and Polly. They weren’t really friends, but they were all getting along. Despite having to deal with Mrs. Applebaum, the kids didn’t have anything in common. Well, besides the game and U.S. History.

Bert put down the plates, Stanley placed the silverware. The smell from the kitchen made Stanley’s stomach grumble.

Maybe you can stay the night. The moon will be nearly full tonight. Maybe we can go and check it out. I still haven’t gotten to use that telescope I got for Christmas.

You never told me you got a telescope.

    "Did so. You must
