    ~ Sydney ~

    The winter cold of the North Georgia Mountains had set in the air, chilling me from the inside out. The trees still had a few colored leaves glowing in the waning rays of the sun, giving the yard a striking painted look through the kitchen window. Most of the sounds of nature were quiet as they had gone seeking a warmer climate or were hibernating for the season.

    It had only been a month since I found out shifters existed. Not only them but also fairies, vampires, witches, Bigfoot, mermaids, and everything else that goes bump in the night were real. Tonight, I would find out if I am one too when the full moon reaches its peak. Nate forgot to mention that part until after he had bitten me, making us one. Not that it would have changed my mind, he’s my fated mate, and we are meant to be together. Nevertheless, I was nervous; I might not be human when I wake up tomorrow; it was a lot to take in.

    Grill’s hot, Alpha Walt announced as he let the door slam shut disturbing me from answering emails on my phone.

    He walked to his mate Andy, who was elbow deep in marinated raw chicken and kissed her cheek. Not as hot as you though. Then smacked her on the ass, making her jump and giggle like a schoolgirl.

    Glad I can hold my own against cooking equipment. Chicken’s ready for the grill. She lifted her hands out of the bowl and gagged at the sight.

    Thanks, Babe. Walt kissed her cheek, grabbed the bowl of chicken, and turned the hot water on as he headed back outside.

    You two are so cute; it makes me sick. Bitsy covered the container of coleslaw and stuck it on the other counter with the other items ready to go.

    Stop lying; you love it. Bitsy’s one of my closest friends and turns out, my stepsister. I’m fuzzy on the details; my adoptive dad wanted to explain everything in person, which we haven’t done yet.

    Feeling a little bad for letting them do all the work I asked, You sure I can’t help?

    No! My kitchen mates responded.

    If you say so. I grinned at my phone and went back to my email.

    You stay right there, Syd. We’re all good. Mel sighed, probably with relief. She had to spend an entire day re-seasoning her cast iron skillets when I ‘helped’ and ‘she ain’t got time for that.’ I felt terrible about almost ruining her pans, but no one will ask me to work in the kitchen again, so not too bad. I bit my lip to keep from chuckling as I hit send and then set my phone down.

    Bitsy took the potato salad from the fridge and put it on her workspace. Are you gals excited for tonight? She tasted it and reached for the seasoning salt.

    Sam spoke for us when she answered without looking up from mixing the fall fruit bowl. Excited isn’t the correct word, nervous for sure.

    Don’t be afraid, Bitsy tried the potato salad again. Satisfied, she put the lid back on and set it next to the coleslaw.

    Right, why should we worry? My daughter, granddaughter, and daughter-in-law’s bodies are about to change on a molecular level. Nothing scary about that. Mel stabbed at the corncobs in the giant boiling pot of water on the industrial stove.

    I think she was not only nervous for us but also a little upset she wouldn’t go through an awakening. She and Graham were fated, and she wore his mark, but he had been mated before, and even though he was technically divorced, shifters cannot be unmated, it doesn’t work like that.

    Babe, we’re ten minutes away! Walt yelled from outside.

    Thanks! Sides are coming out now! Andy took a couple of rolls of paper towels, set them on the stack of plastic plates, and picked up everything.

    How will it happen? Sam asked as she grabbed the fruit bowl. The Moon rises, and what?

    Bitsy shrugged and grabbed the coleslaw. It’s been more than a hundred years since we’ve had an awakening, so I have no idea.

    Then we have every right to be nervous. I set my phone down, hopped off the stool, and then picked up the plastic silverware container. We walked outside with our load for the serving table, set up everything, and went back inside to get the rest.

    Humans have been going through awakenings since the dawn of shifters. No one ever died… I think.

    Bitsy whispered the last part, but we heard it, and shouted, You think!?!

    I’m sure if something went wrong, it would be in the records.

    That’s not very reassuring, Bitsy. The butterflies in my stomach seemed to increase with every helpful tidbit she added.

    No kidding. Mel took the pans out of the oven and dropped them with a bang on the stainless steel table. The records are vague. Nothing good, or bad, one month it says an awakening will happen tonight, and the next mention of a new leopard or snow owl or whatever.

    Bitsy put her hands on her hips. Did they ever say anyone died?

    No, but–

    See! I’m sure it’ll be fine! Bitsy took two thick potholders, picked up the boiling corn pot, and headed outside with it. She’s the only one in the kitchen who could lift it. Even I can’t, and I work out four or five times a week. Maybe after tonight, I could too unless I’m the first human written into the records as a casualty, of course.

    ~~~
    Excitement for the upcoming group shift was palpable during dinner. The adults talked animatedly, while the kids ran circles around each other burning off the sugar high from the cupcakes Bitsy made especially for them.
    No one seemed scared for us humans, although, they also didn’t have a clue what would happen. The only one that offered any opinion was Abe. He surmised since every awakening is unique, recording them was pointless because it wouldn’t repeat.
    I thought he was making shit up to relieve his mate, Sam’s fears. It did nothing to ease mine.
    After dinner, the moms and dads took their children into the lodge and got them settled. Tonight is eighteen and over. My interns told me that when they shift, and the moon is at its peak, the experience is orgasmic. The party can get freaky, especially with unmated adults, so no kids allowed.
    Soon enough, it was time to say our goodbyes. My kitchen mates and I held each other longer than the others with wishes of luck. Bitsy and Mel joined the other shifters staying behind as the rest of us headed out in three different directions.
    Nate led me around the lodge past where we had our first kiss. We followed the path, past a sign warning not to go any further, and a giant rock with names of clan members spray-painted over it, to our predetermined spot near the creek.
    Nate didn’t warn me when he picked me up and lifted me on top of an enormous boulder where champagne and chocolate syrup waited.
    I was laughing when he reached the top. One of our playful times ended in a food fight, and I found splatters of both just yesterday on the top shelf of the over-the-fridge cupboard.
    Thank you for this. I couldn’t imagine it better. Rising to my toes, he bent at the same time to give me a soft kiss. Love you.
    Love you too, Sydney. He gave me another peck before sitting with his legs spread apart. I held his hand as I sat with my back to his chest, and his arms wrapped around me.
    We didn’t talk as we watched the moon inch to the top of its arch. The area lit up for a moment.
    Nate said, Whoa.
    Whoa? What whoa?
    You changed colors for a second.
    Don’t be ridiculous. I lifted my forearm as my skin turned bright shiny gold for a second. Holy crap! What does this mean?
    No clue.
    You’re a big hel– It happened again, and my stomach dropped. "Maybe you should back away. What if I’m Midas and my touch turns you into gold?"
