    INTRODUCTION AND MY STORY

My midlife crisis came about at the age of forty-eight. I was in a job I enjoyed, I had financial security. Life for me and my family was good. Then, one day, the first of several curveballs (for which I was woefully unprepared) came hurtling my way. Balls that would hit me square in the face. Balls I would subsequently learn to duck and eventually balls I would expertly catch. Here is my story.

That day started out like any other day, battling the traffic as I drove to work in West London. There was nothing out of the ordinary, nothing to alert me to what was about to happen, when I arrived at the office early. As a Senior Account Director, I had the flexibility to work the hours I needed to which suited me perfectly. Though the job was target based I was doing well, and in that period was on course to invoice triple my target which equated to a substantial seven figure sum. It was the best job I’d ever had.

Around mid-morning I received an all-staff email, requesting that we be on the shop floor at 11am - there was to be an announcement from the Managing Director. Speculation was rife and our worst fears were realised when it was announced that following due process, redundancies would be made. To say it put everyone on edge for the next few days was an understatement. Eventually, those at risk were informed. I was not on the list. This time.

Three months later another all-staff email arrived and now I wasn’t so lucky. I was on the list. After going through the due process, I was informed that I hadn’t survived. I can still remember that moment as if it was yesterday - indeed I have a tear in my eye as I write this. I recall phoning my wife to let her know and listening helplessly as she broke down. It was one of the worst experiences of my life.

After that meeting, driving back to my family, I went through a series of emotions: anger, blame, frustration, sadness, fear, and trepidation. Trepidation of what was to come, and of seeing my wife. I didn’t know how I would deal with
