    Chapter 1

It was early afternoon when Ronnie came riding into town to the Pearl Star, a saloon his sister owned. When he walked in Victoria looked at Ronnie.

    Is Autumn here?

She shouldn’t be long, just went to the general store for a few things. Should be back any moment now. Have a seat I’ll bring you a beer.

Ronnie sat at the table waiting when Noah came in and sat with him.

How are you cousin? Taking a break from the ranch?

No, just came in to see Autumn.

He heard her voice the second the last word came out of his mouth.

    What’s up Ronnie?

He was glad to have most everyone there. Now he could share the news with them.

"You know that mansion up the road from my ranch? Well

I was taking a ride past the mansion when I noticed someone there. I went up to see why this stranger was hanging around and he said he’s looking to buy the place. Man’s name is Colt Reid.Says he’s an oil tycoon from Texas."

    Everyone was curious, particularly Noah.

If he’s such a tycoon then why would he want to leave Texas? Something’s fishy about this.

Ronnie nodded in agreement then he told them what Colt told him.

Says he married a woman who used to live here long ago and she misses living here. Wants to buy the place as a present for her.

The women looked at one another.

Well now isn’t that sweet, doesn’t sound fishy to me.

    Cora agreed with Victoria.

Sounds to me like he really loves his bride.

A man walked in at that moment. They all turned to see who he was when Ronnie walked over to shake his hand and greet him.

Well nice to see ya again. I’d like you to meet my friends and family. This is my cousin Noah, my sister Autumn and my friends Cora and Victoria. Everyone this is Colt Reid, the man I was just telling you about.

Noah shook his hand and welcomed him to town.

So when do you think you and your bride will be moving here?

Colt removed his hat, grinned and nodded.

"Yes well, here’s the thing. She doesn’t know I’m buying this

house for her. I want to surprise her. I’m just here for a couple of days to set things up and get things ready for the move. Right now she thinks I’m on a business trip. Guess in a way it’s just that."

The women thought it was so romantic and his bride was lucky. Autumn was feeling a little weak, no doubt because she is pregnant now. Cora looked at her and helped her to sit down.

Autumn, you really need to take it easy now.

Victoria agreed with Cora and talked her into going home to rest. Autumn didn’t argue but left for home. Ronnie offered to escort her home to make sure she would be all right. Colt sat down and ordered a beer.

So nice to see a husband and wife get along so well.

The women giggled and Victoria shook her head.

We’re sorry Mr. Reid we didn’t mean to laugh but Ronnie and Autumn are brother and sister.

Really? I never knew a brother and sister to get along so well. Maybe it’s just the ones I know but they do seem close.

Cora set his beer on the table.

They are very close, they look after each other and take care of each other. I mean they are there for each other.

Victoria joined in on the conversation.

They moved to Anaconda about a year ago, after their parents were...well, murdered. Brutally. They had a difficult start but they’re fine now.

Colt took a few swigs of beer.

Sounds like a sad story got better. Good to hear. You know I was wondering. I’d like to get the house cleaned up inside. Don’tsuppose you know anyone I could hire for that? I don’t know anyone here.

Victoria and Cora looked at each other, they both had the same idea.

Well Cora and I would be happy to help. With the two of us working together we can have it done in practically no time.

Well I don’t know, I sure would hate to impose.

    Cora anxiously replied.

    It’s no imposition, really.

Well if you’re sure, I would appreciate any help at all.

    Victoria smiled.

Leave it to us, we’ll take care of it for you.

Colt agreed to let them take care of things there.

I’ll still be in town for a while so that will give me a chance to take care of the outside. Thank you both, very kindly.

Colt left some money on the table then walked out to go back. As he was leaving Ronnie was walking back inside. Autumn had a message for the women. Colt asked if he would mind taking a ride out to the house with him, Ronnie was obliged. After he spoke to Cora and Victoria he and Colt were on their way out to the mansion. They talked along the way, Colt told him about the plans he had for the house before he brought his bride back with him.

Well I have weekends free and some days. My brother in-law, Austin, knows carpentry. I have no doubt he would help if I ask him. We could take care of the outside, with all of us pitching in we’ll have the place looking better than ever.

Colt was pleased to hear about the help that was offered to him.

I’ve noticed people in this town are a might friendly.

    Ronnie nodded.

Yes they are. If ever someone is in need, the rest of the town gets together to help each other. No lack of help in this town.

Ronnie was feeling, a little reclusive. Seems everyone, or most everyone was paired off. He started thinking about Chandra. True she is an Indian, but she really appeals to him, he can’t stop thinking about her. Maybe someday he could go back and visit her, and Billy. For now he made a promise to help fix up the mansion. Colt would be in town to help for about a week so they would get a good start. They looked over the outside, all around and talked about what Colt had in mind. For the remaining of the week, Colt, Ronnie and Austin all got together to help, even Tim spent time working with them when he could. By the end of the week Colt had to get back to Texas so his bride wouldn’t wonder about why he was gone.

I can’t thank all of you enough. I promise to make this worth your while when we move here. Your efforts won’t go without rewards.

Colt got on his horse, said goodbye to all then rode into town to return the horse to the stable. He had a train ticket for Texas and hopped the mid afternoon train back home. Autumn happened by, Colt wished her his best.

Miss Autumn, you take care of you and that little one. My mother used to say, giving life is the most precious gift a woman can give. For you and your husband. It’s a pleasure meeting you. My wife and I will be back in a few weeks. I’d like all of you to meet her.

Well we would all be honored. Have a good trip.

Colt kissed her hand and wished her well, then he hopped on the train and Autumn stood as the train departed, waiving to the soon to be new member of town. She was walking to the general store when suddenly a pain struck her, bent over she knew she was about to give birth. She let out a scream and Noah came running.

    Autumn, what’s wrong?

She was breathing heavy and holding her stomach.

    The baby is coming.

She let out another scream, Noah picked her up and carried her to Logan’s office. He kicked in the door and Logan came out to the sitting room and found Noah carrying their cousin inside.

Take her to the exam room, we’re about to be second cousins.

Noah smiled and left Autumn in good hands.

Ronnie and Austin are at the mansion, I’ll ride out and give them the news.

Cora and Victoria came rushing in, they both saw Noah carrying Autumn to his office. Logan asked them for their help since Austin was at the mansion. Victoria stood behind Autumn and Cora held her hand. Working up a sweat and still screaming in pain, Logan told her it was time to push. She was glad to have the two women there to help, but it wasn’t long before Austin burst into the room to be with the mother of his child. Victoria and Cora left waiting in the other room with Ronnie. He could barely speak, he was about to become an uncle.

Several hours had gone by and suddenly things were quiet. The door to the exam room slowly opened them Austin walked out with his son in his arms. Everyone jumped up to see the new baby. A beautiful miracle. Austin looked up at everyone.

    She’s fine, sleeping but fine.

He walked over to Ronnie handing him the baby.

Ronnie, meet your nephew, Wyatt. Wyatt, this is your Uncle Ronnie.

How could such a tiny being make you feel so ecstatic inside, such a powerful feeling this small child has on adults.

Well I would say you and my sister have been blessed.

Austin stood there more proud as anyone can be.

Logan is keeping her and Wyatt here over night, I can bring them home tomorrow.

    Austin, where are the girls?

They wanted to see their friends at the orphanage, Father is keeping them till I go pick them up."

Ronnie couldn’t take his eyes off of Austin holding his son.

I’ll go get the girls and take them home. Take all the time you want, we’ll be fine.

    Thanks Ronnie. I appreciate this.

Victoria and Cora left going back to the saloon while Ronnie went to pick up the girls and take them home. Leaving the office the sun was shining bright, this turned out to be a glorious day just made for the new born baby. Ronnie took his time walking over to the orphanage, the girls enjoyed seeing their friends and Ronnie had some thoughts to sort out, more like plans to make. He wasn’t paying any mind to how close he was to the orphanage when his concentration was broken by the calls of Sally and Liz.

    Uncle Ronnie!

They were always happy to see him. Father stood and watched as the girls run to him jumping in his arms.

Uncle Ronnie, what are you doing?

Liz smiled at him, then Sally had her turn.

    Is mommy and daddy ok?

"Relax girls everything is fine. Your mom delivered your new

baby brother, his name is Wyatt."

The girls looked so happy and full of questions.

When can we see him? Sally and I will take good care of him.

That’s right Uncle Ronnie, we practiced with our dolls.

Liz and Sally were so adorable, Ronnie thanked Father Reuben for having them then walked them home to make them lunch. He did his best to explain taking care of a baby isn’t like taking care of a doll, but he was sure Autumn would let them help in her way.

They will be home sooner than you think. Let’s go have some lunch, what do you say?

Sally and Liz both offered to make lunch, Sister Abigail let them make their own lunch at the orphanage and wanted to impress their Uncle.

Victoria and Cora were back at the saloon tending to their customers, they were starting to come in when Victoria looked up and saw Tim.

    Sweetheart, what brings you here?

He had a half smile on his face, she knew something wasn’t right.

I have to work late tonight so I won’t be home for dinner. So I thought I would spend some time here with you, maybe if you can get away we could go have lunch.

Victoria was sad and happy but she couldn’t get away and leave Cora by herself.

Tell you what, come to the back with me and I can fix us something quick. We can sit back there and talk and if Cora needs me she’ll call me.

It was something, some time together and that’s what they were looking for. Victoria told Tim about the baby and she wanted to finish the quilt she was making.

It’s almost finished, I suppose I can do that while you’re working.

It’s always a joyous occasion when a newborn has arrived. Austin wanted to stay with Autumn but knew he had to get home to the girls.

I’ll be back tomorrow morning to take you home.

"It really is awfully nice of Logan to let me stay the night here.

This is just his office, but he has a room here for when he works late."

Austin smiled and kissed her then left to relieve Ronnie. He thanked Logan on is way out then rushed home to be with Sally and Liz. When he arrived he found them all in the kitchen and Ronnie was finishing up his sandwich the girls made for him. Austin giggled a bit.

I see the girls made you their special lunch?

Yes they did, and it was pretty darn good.

"They can make a bang up lunch. Autumn sends her love and

is looking forward to coming home. Thank you so much for

looking after the girls for me."

Not a problem, we had a great time. Well ladies I have to be going now. Lots of work waiting for me at home. Be good for your daddy ok?

The girls promised they would be and wanted to hear all about their baby brother. They walked Ronnie to the door and said so long. Returning to his thoughts and making his plans as he rode home. He would do some work on his ranch then go out to the mansion and do what he could there. Billy was on his mind, they were close buddies back in Cheyenne. He stopped and sat for a moment removing his keys from his pocket and admiring the hedgehog key chain Billy carved for him before he left Cheyenne. Returning his keys to his pocket Ronnie rode quickly to the ranch to get some work done.

Everyone who worked to clean up the mansion did a wonderful job, the place looked almost new. The day they knew Colt would arrive with his bride, Cora and Victoria rode out early to set up some finishing touches. They set up some fresh cut flowers in the sitting room, entry hall and the main bedroom. Cora even baked a batch of muffins, wrapped them in a basket and left them in the kitchen with a note attached.

Well Cora, I think everything looks wonderful. We better get moving before they arrive.

They rushed out the door leaving the key where Colt asked them to, then went back to town.

Victoria, does anyone know his wife’s name?

    She thought a moment.

You know what? I don’t believe so.

What excitement this town has, first a newborn baby then new neighbors moving in the mansion. Everyone was curious about Colt’s wife, no one thought to ask her name. All the talk was about getting things ready for when he brought her back here. Things went on business as usual through town, Autumn stopped over at the saloon for a bit to check on things. Autumn stayed till almost noon when Colt walked in and saw the ladies sitting together.

Well ladies how nice to see you all together. Miss Autumn, congratulations on your new family addition. The reason I’m here is to thank you for a job so well done at the mansion. Also for the finishing touches. Mazie couldn’t be happier. As a token of my gratitude I’d like to arrange a party right here in the saloon if you you don’t mind? A surprise for Mazie and a token of my appreciation for everyone who has helped with the mansion. I’ll be having supper delivered here from the hotel. Would this cover everything?

Autumn looked at the wade of bills he laid on the table, after counting it they were all speechless.

For this amount we can close the saloon for your party.

    Colt smiled and nodded.

Well I’m glad you said that because that is what I had in mind. Oh and this will be tonight around six if that’s ok with you ladies? Invite Ronnie, the doctor and the sheriff for me. This has to be just right. I sure would appreciate this. Thank you ladies.

With that Colt tipped his hat and was on his way out. Autumn just looked at Victoria and Cora then explained she would deliver the invites then be back to help get ready for the party. She stopped in to see Logan and Noah then went home to check on the baby and tell Austin about the party. Finally everyone will be meeting Mrs. Reid.

I have to go talk to Ronnie, would you mind just about another half hour or so?

This is my son too you know, of course I don’t mind. Relax and don’t rush, we’re all good.

Autumn kissed Austin and the girls and of course Wyatt then was on her way out to Ronnie’s ranch. The sun was shining, it was warm but there was a gentle breeze making it comfortable. When she arrived at the ranch Ronnie was working in the barn. She called out to him and he came out to greet her.

Well if it isn’t the new mom, how are things?

Everything is fine. Listen to this, Colt is back in town at the mansion and he brought his wife. Her name is Mazie, at least that’s how he addressed her.

Mazie huh. Was he happy with the way the place looked?

Very, in fact he’s throwing a party to introduce us to his wife and as a thank you for all who helped him. It’s at the Pearl Star at six tonight. He’s even having the food delivered!

Wow, sounds like a big shin dig.

Well I came out to invite you as he asked.

She looked around and things looked as though he was getting ready to close down the ranch.

What’s going on here? Your not moving are you?

No, I’m not moving. Tomorrow morning I’m going back to Cheyenne. Just a visit, maybe stop by the house. Missing little Billy and his father. You know.

She could see he was missing their old life, even though there was nothing left to go back to outside of friends.

I understand, not that I could go back but I know what you’re saying. Say hello for me. Maybe someday I can find the courage to go back, just not right now.

Ronnie understood, she went through hell before they moved here and hopefully someday she would get past that. He hugged his sister and told her he would be there at six. Autumn turned around then rode away. When she arrived back in town things were running smoothly, everything and everyone tending to their needs. Noah had stopped by to see his cousin.

Well good afternoon mom. Wyatt looks like a happy baby and Sally and Liz are thrilled to have a little brother. My guess is as he gets older they will challenge him.

He laughed and so did Autumn.

    Isn’t that what big sister’s do? I’ll see you later won’t I?

Wouldn’t miss it, anxious to meet the bride.

Autumn went inside and was met by Austin.

The girls are watching Wyatt sleep. I made sure to tell them he needs his sleep. Oh and Victoria stopped by, she wanted to let you know the saloon is ready for the party tonight.

    Autumn looked a little troubled.

I know that look, what’s wrong?

"Probably nothing but...well Ronnie is going back to Cheyenne

in the morning. Says he misses little Billy and our friends back there."

    He hugged her for comfort.

You and I both know he’s happy here. Maybe he left something behind and he needs to tend to it, it’ll be fine.

I guess you’re right. I’m not so sure I can ever go back there again.

He looked at her remembering what she went through.

Sit down. I know you went through hell and it was awful. No one could deny that, but someday you will be able to return again. Maybe no time soon but you will.

At the moment she wasn’t so sure she could agree with him, but then there could be some truth in what he says. For now her life is here with her family and friends. Right now she had to start getting ready for the party. Pick out what she and the girls would wear and Wyatt. Everyone was excited about meeting Colt’s wife, she’s a mystery. Cora hung a sign that for that evening the saloon would be closed, people will be arriving soon and she and Victoria had to get ready themselves.

It was five forty five and everyone was there waiting
