    CHAPTER 1

    When Elephants Act Up

Throughout history elephants have performed many roles for humans. In India they are worshipped and are led through city streets in colorful costumes for festivals. In Southeast Asia, elephants work, carrying heavy loads for humans. Baby elephants have been used to greet hotel guests in Thailand. There, tourists pay to feed and pet elephants on the street.

Two elephants with colorful painted trunks, each carrying one man sitting on a large basket. They are walking down a road next to vehicles.
