A Talk Show Host’s Memoir - Lydia Wade

    MY RESUME

Married captain joel r. Amar, july 18, 1964 (deceased), then to my second husband, joseph j. Wade, sept. 9,1989 (Deceased) six years after the captain died in an accident. Children: paz cielo, clyde and glynn grandchildren: stephanie, alexandra, gabriella, olivia, brian, elizabeth and katherine.

Educational qualification: graduated from pnc (philippine normal university) with the following degress: etche, elementary certificate with specialization in home economics on april 19, 1960, bsehe (bachelors’ degree with home economics major on may, 1962 and mahe masters degree in home economics (without thesis) in june 1970.

Work experiences: 1. Recruited as one of the contract workers in nigeria, west africa with the title educ. Officer i, promoted to senior education officer in 1976, then again promoted to principal education officer in 1978.

Awarded the square bracket award, by the federal ministry in lagos, nigeria in 1979, an award that was never given to a foreigner before. I was the first ofw to receive that prestigious award. I was again awarded the bagong bayani award for outstanding worker abroad" by then ferdinand marcos in 1985.

When my contract in nigeria ended in 1984, i was hired as a case manager, entitlement and benefits specialist, lecturer of food and nutrition, teacher of english as a second language and handled citizenship classes at four senior centers in new york for non-english-speaking clients, mostly hispanics.

Traveled extensively throughout the u.S. And abroad. Retired after 18 years of service and again was awarded a plaque for outstanding service to seniors in southwest queens, new york.

Retired after joseph wade died in 2007 and moved to illinois. Wrote several books about family drama, 3 memoirs, romance and adventure novels.

Now fully retired, i settle in marikina city, philippines, my country of birth with visits to the u. S every six or seven months in huntley, illinois, usa. I spent retirement traveling and writing books, my retirement goals.

I then became one of the talk shows at a local radio station in huntley, illinois. My first interview was with dorothy weinfield, one of the founders of the station. It was a trial recording. Sample questions i asked were the following: 1. You have mentioned in our chat before that you had traveled a lot too before your husband died. What places did you go? What did you experience during your travels by air by cruises and by road? Any problems encountered? Were you a homemaker before you stareted traveling? If you were to go on trips again, where would you want to go? Why? What places would you recommend to our listeners, the homemakers for their vacation?

The interview was long because she highlighted each of her answers. Because of the time limit however, i had to end our interview, thanking her profusely for being a very knowledgeable and cooperative interviewee.

That trial recording was an eye opener for me, a testing ground. She assured me that my show would be a good one.

Thinking about the succeeding interviews and presentations, i felt a little nervous at the prospect of talking on the radio to different types of listeners. I asked myself how i could be most interesting, make my speech as clear and articulate as possible and relaxed throughout the show. It was important to make a good impression at the start to entice the listeners. I had several experiences in talking in public when i became a teacher and assistant president of the home economics associatioin in quezon city, philippines. We had conducted a series of meetings and seminars attended by teachers and principals around the capital. In nigeria where i was the head of the home economics department for nine years, i was inducted into the nigeria educational research council, a prestigious federal research organization after i had earned a square bracket award by the federal college of education in lagos for excellent service to the college, given only after very ten years of continuous outstanding service. I was the first foeign worker to earn such a prestigious national award. We then had held a lot of seminars and conferences all over the couintry. I presented papers in the presence of college principals and teachers many times. In other words, i was a seasoned speaker of many issues about my field, humbly said.

Thinking of the above experiences, i got bolstered and developed a sense of confidence to face any task related to speaking. After all, what is talking for twenty seven minutes each time compared with what i had done before? The only difference was, i had an unfamiliar audience and could not discern my audience’ reactions. Still, i was not daunted. I decided to face the music bravely like the chivalrous knights of old.

I submitted the outline to dorothy at her request. I told her that home economics or homemaking consists of main areas, namely, food and nutrition, clothing and related arts, home management and housekeeping and home and family living. Each area includes several sub- topics which i had planned to tackle one by one.

Copy of the outline for the first area, food and nutrition:

    8. Food labels/ nutrition fact

    9. Food and drug interaction diseases

    10. Associated with malnutrition and health

    11. Food safety

Because each of these topics is long and comprehensive, i trimmed each to fit into the allocated time of twenty seven minutes each show.

    Clothing and related arts:

I selected only five of this area. The interviews were presented in between topics. Dorothy and the director encouraged us to interview local residents with different professions to be included as many times as possible in our shows to give variety.

    FIRST SHOW - INTRODUCTION

Greetings to all homemakers of huntley! My name is lydia b. Wade. I am here as one of hcr’s new talk show hosts. The name of my new show is the homemaker with lydia. As the name suggests, the show is dedicated to homemakers. A homemaker is a wife, a husband, a grandparent, a relative or anyone faced with the tasks of homemaking. Homemaking is described as managing the family, up keep of the home, clothing and dressing the family, and maintaining happy family relationships. As such, the homemaker is faced with many responsibilities, especially if she also works outside. Let us examine the responsibilities of the homemaker in maintaining a happy family.

My dear homemakers, it takes a lot of courage, patience, perseverance, and hard work to be a good homemaker. I know you are trying to be one. Keep it up. After all, nothing is perfect and let every error or mistake be a lesson to improve.

Having said that, let me assure you that in spite of the daunting tasks the homemaker faces, she/ he is encouraged and rewarded in more ways than one. Believe me. I am also a homemaker, a working homemaker too, has been since i was a young, married woman. So many memories left behind, i look back with satisfaction and gratitude that i had fulfilled my duties and responsibilities to my family amid all obstacles and challenges. I now recall this saying by an ancient philosopher; the reward of having done well is not in the result, but to have done it. I have written many books, and in some of them, i have included the trials and travails that i surmounted. You may call me to get a copy of one of them, through hcr number.

Homemaking has had a colorful, long history. It had evolved from many terms since after world war ii. First, it had been called home arts, home science, homemaking and then it became home economics. As was finally agreed at a conference in lake placid, new york sometime in late 1800’s, miss ellen shallow richards initiated teaching the subject. It started full scale in america after the american revolution. It was taught in the lower grades with emphasis on art and crafts after the students successfully sold their art products. Later on, it included many other areas essential in the building of a home. At present, home economics is being taught from the lower to the higher levels of learning with some high schools and c olleges offering it as an elective subject. Later after world war ii, the subject included other relevant topics like food preservation, consumer education, food production and money management including budgetting. After the many aspects had been added to the school cjuriculum, home economics retained its name but for purposes of my show, i use homemaking since home econs. Involves a lot of demonstrating practical activities for the homemaker that require skills, principles and know-how. Besides, the full time homemaker does not go to school to devote her time for the home and family. My shows will include principles, types, tools and materials useful for the homemaker especially for the new homemakers.

So much for history, my esteemed homemakers. Allow me to end my show today with the hope of gaining your attention and interest in a subject that is more relevant to daily living than any other. In my next show, i shall discuss the first area, food and nutrition with the topic" what is food and why do we eat food? Meanwhile, i will entertain your comments on every topic of discussion by calling me at 847-669-4884, or hcr number: 847-669-

Each of my shows opens with a theme song, terry’s theme, i’ll be loving you eternally, one of my favorites, and ends with the same tune.

THE HOMEMAKER WITH LYDIA SECOND SHOW

Hello, homemakers and listeners of huntley community radio. I am back to resume my program. It was good to hear some useful commments from a couple of listeners. I welcome them! In my succeeding segments, i shall be interviewing some of you. You will have more opportunities to comment or ask me some questions. My first guest is with janet anderson about the topic at hand. She is a mother, a grandmother and a veteran homemaker for many years.

"Hello, janet. Thank you for coming to our show at such a short notice. Tell us about yourself and your family. Do you still live in sun city? Good. I do too, for 6 years now. How long have you lived in del webb? Good environment for retirees, yes?

"Yes. I have lived there since it opened about 8 years ago. About myself and family: i am a widow of 10 years with four children and 8 grandchildren. And before i go on, thank you for inviting me to your well-listened show, mrs. Wade. I worked as an assistant manager in a food store in mchenry.

What did you do as a homemaker? When my children were growing up, i can’t tell you exactly what i did. For it would be too long to narrate them. But now, since i work only on saturdays and sundays, i help my daughter look after her pre-schooler, a 4-year old boy and a twelve year-old girl in first year high school. Any problems with them? Not really, except that my preschooler, the 4- year old boy is very hard to feed. I have to follow him with a bowl of food around the house each feeding time. I changed that and give him food only when he asks for it. That’s good strategy. Any other problems? None that are any different from other’s children. My daughter who is a nurse trusts me implicitly in controlling them if they misbehave.

What other outside job do you do when your daughter or husband are home? I work as a volunteer in a home for girls in elgin. That’s interesting indeed. What does your job involve? I read to them especially at bedtime, accompany them out to play or exercise and help prepare and serve their meals. How many girls are in that home? Right now, there are thirteen. Two of them were claimed by their parents recently.

Do you have anything more to add, janet? Ah, yes. The homemaker should do activities more than housework, cooking meals, etc. She should try to entertain herself with music, attend gatherings sometimes reading or writng that stimulates creativity and eliminate monotony in doing same things day by day. Very good advice, again, janet. Thank you. In fact i shall discuss later in my shows the topic of leisure, travel and vacations for the homemaker once in a while.

Last but not least, to the lone homemaker like yourself who lives alone, what is your advice? "Since there are no family members for me to look after now, i don’t even bother cooking for myself. I just rely mostly on what they call, tv dinners. When my family visits, i do as much as i could to please them with my cooking and serving them the meals they love. Thanksgiving day is coming soon.
