PROLOGUE
In the 20th century, our country obsessed over designer sneakers and sports apparel. The apparel symbolized success and we became more obsessed with our style than our character. We know this because in 1990, we were willing to pay over $100 for a pair of sneakers. Some sneakers cost as much as $170. In 1986, an average pair of sneakers cost only $20.
As a result, there was an outbreak of crime among kids who were trying to look fresh
but could not afford the gear.
According to Elijah Anderson, who works at a college studying how different people behave, only kids in the city were having problems about symbolizing their success by wearing sports gear.
