Faraway: Book Two: the Path to Peace
()
About this ebook
Take up the drawbridge; clear the outlying areas of innocent civilians; stock up the larder; bring in more ammunition; station guards on every entrance; impose an evening curfew. Things are about to happen.
Harry Louis Gauvin
Harry Gauvin came to story writing late in life, but his imagination is as vibrant today as it was when he told stories to his four children at bedtime, and it delighted him to find that they remembered some of them right through to the present day. He has become a prolific writer of children’s books and short stories, as well as a number written for an older audience. His books encourage his beloved grandchildren to enter the magic world of his imagination. The books draw on a very busy life that has included military service and the successful establishment and operation of a State-wide consulting business recognised for its innovation. The stories subconsciously reflect a sense of integrity and fair play as well as the need to care for the environment. They are also playful and good fun. Readers can immerse themselves in tales full of adventure, courage, wisdom and companionship. The set of Bingert and Friends gives life to characters created and drawn by his children. Jon Weber is an award-winning illustrator from Brisbane, Australia. Working professionally for nearly ten years, his traditionally tendered pictures surround the fantastical, the fun and the weird. Produced in everything from pencils to oil paint, his work has found its way into every nook imaginable, from children’s books to heavy metal covers, comic art and gaming concept design. You might find his work popping out at you from film projects, Augmented Reality animations, or upon the stage where one such effort earned him a QLD theatre Matilda Award for his projected watercolour illustrations in Shake and Stir’s rendition of Roald Dahl’s classic story, “Fantastic Mr Fox”. Whatever the case, Jon’s illustrations are sure to take you on a journey deep into the realm of imagination and adventure.

For Olivia and George
with love, Grandfather
One
N ow that George had been granted access to the world of the fairies so that he, like Olivia, could now see them and hear them and actually converse with them, he wanted to know so much more and he did not need Olivia to be his go-between any longer. She had tried very hard to faithfully relay what the fairies had told her about those ancient days, but it just didn’t have that ‘ring’ about it.
He would not dream of hurting her feelings so he just said that he had got himself very confused and would like to hear it again. Olivia did not want to go back over all that because, really, she, like Gran, was not all that madly interested in some rocky historical path. Just as well, thought George, as that freed him to find the gung-ho fairies who would give him the low-down about those days. He and Olivia loved each other’s company and they were a bit miffed when they ended up going to different primary schools, Olivia to Xavier Ladies’ Junior School and George to Huntington Boys’ College, and it meant that they developed different circles of friends, but they still had this unbreakable bond and found lots of time for each other.
George’s curiosity about the fairies was insistent and this Saturday morning, he trekked down to the Faraway Tree alone, because Olivia had dancing lessons, and that was one thing he really wasn’t into. When he got there, it was too early for tourists, young lovers or older couples meandering along clothed in their memories. He could hear the noise coming from the tree even before he reached it – it was something that nobody who had not been initiated could ever hear. They were pleased to see him and he was really excited to be there, but a bit saddened to learn that Bill was not there for him, though happy to learn Bill had gone on to that special after-life reserved for good people.
George stood under the branches of the great tree and announced why he had come in a voice that he hoped would reach the uppermost branches. Then he waited. A small voice, more like it was in his own head, said George, there’s no need to shout. I’m just here. Remember, you can even talk to us with your mind. Humans cannot hear you, but we can.
George apologised. "Now, you want to find out how fairies came to be, and this realm we occupy. It is quite a long story and some of it is turbulent. Apart from the last thousand years, all of it has been passed down by word of mouth.
To understand it all, we really have to go back to prehistory, even to the start of time. We have two seers who together can provide you that insight. Just climb up into the hollow of those branches and you should not be disturbed by passers-by.
Soon, two venerable fairies alighted, one on each shoulder and they introduced themselves by the same name, which wasn’t so surprising, because they looked exactly the same. "This is a long story and you won’t hear it all in one session, or even several, so prepare yourself. We will take turns explaining but you won’t know whose talking because we sound exactly the same too. Most of the stuff took place before we were ‘born’ but we are quite a bit older than fairies normally live and some of
