I grew up in a small town and wanted to be more then my surroundings. I joined the Marine Corp when I was 18 and was active duty during 9/11, Afghanistan conflict, and the invasion of Iraq. After the military, I wanted to serve my community again by working in corrections. My first book “Mine eyes have seen” is the tool I used to deal with my PTSD and the daily struggles it brings. At the beginning of that book, I never thought I could be an author and never believed that dream was possible. I have been and always will be strongly dedicate to my country and hope to continue to fight my personal struggles and continue to serve my country through written word. I have always strived to be a good example to my family, my community and fellow brothers and sisters of the military.

INTRODUCTION
What is contained in this book is the interviewed documentation of Operation Vanguard. The events discussed relate to the human element of Operation Vanguard and the human aspect of what transpired. The intention of this manuscript is that you, the reader, understand what went through the minds of all individuals in what is also known as the Mathews Incident. This interview process that was used gives an in-depth look at the people involved both directly and indirectly with the incident and all events leading up to Operation Vanguard. Direct interviews allowed us to link emotions and perspective to people that were previously looked at as just names. The knowledge gained through the interviews may start the healing process in hopes of achieving forgiveness. We hope this document helps the victims in understanding why Operation Vanguard happened. It is hoped that the interviews also benefit later generations.
Because of the research provided in the interviews, we were able to solve many unanswered questions surrounding Operation Vanguard. Most of the questions were about Brigadier General Mathews and his character as a leader. The interviews provided in this manuscript were able to show the person Matthews was and his potential motives for his actions. The interviews gave us a look into the mind of Matthews that until this point have never been known.
We understand that not all opinions can be changed. We also understand that there will always be a certain bias to what had transpired. The intention of this document is to understand every side of the history of Operation Vanguard. By being able to see everyone’s point of view, we can come to a mutual understanding of the events. The knowledge that is gained can hopefully bridge a gap between the myth and truth of why Vanguard happened.
This document contains all information provided by the direct witnesses and individuals involved in Operation Vanguard. Names have not been changed unless asked by that individual. All individuals that were question have given written consent. Consent was also given by family members and next of kin of the victims involved. All recordings were kept with original content, without changes. All information contained is in its original form. However, certain parts of this transcript were omitted. The omitted information was foul language, names, and companies that did not want their brands involved. Specific buildings or institutions that felt their involvement in the incident may hurt their character or reputation were also taken out. Any material transcripts given for this book were subject to the strict guidelines from the U.S. Department of Defense, Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigations and approved for this distribution.
Until case file 31008639-A (the Investigation of Operation Vanguard/ Matthews Incident), what was known of Brigadier General Matthews was only what the world had seen on national television and speculation. The information provided by Special Agent Sean Gordon and Agent William Chris was invaluable in piecing together the events that led to the Mathews Incident. Hours of research and interviews were conducted across the United States to compose this document.
-Brian Samuels, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations
SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS
UNIT (SIU)
Approximately a year after Operation Vanguard, the Federal Bureau of Investigations started a face-to-face investigational inquiry of individuals involved with Vanguard. The objective is to get a true understanding of Vanguard and what motivated Brigadier General Mathews. The gathered information will then be processed, studied, and recorded.
A team was established to personally interview individuals directly involved in the Matthews incident. A board of senior F.B.I. members agreed that the two individuals who were best suited to gather the information that was desired. The instruction given to these two agents would be to obtain as much information as possible and build working knowledge of what lea to Vanguard and document it.
First Chosen was Special Agent Sean Gordon. An eleven-year veteran in the bureau and is widely noted for his personal excellence and dedication. He has been dependable since his academy days and is trusted among his peers. His name was suggested because of previous involvements cross training with the U.S. Military. He was notably mentioned for his help capturing the Tacoma bomber and involvement in the Gatlin Kidnapping case. Gordon was promoted a few years later to Special Agent after the arrest of Arron Keppel in Gainesville Georgia

The second to be assigned is Agent William Chris, who is known for good work ethic and strong personality. Agent Chris spent the last five of his seven years working on codes and ciphers for the F.B.I., and local law enforcement agencies and state agencies. He is noted for his intelligent, friendly positive outlook, and hard work.
The Special Investigations unit set with manpower was now going to work. With a growing need for understand and information into the criminal mind and large investigations like Vanguard. The questions of why such tragedies happen looms constantly over criminal psychologist and law enforcement alike. Special Agent Gordon and Agent Chris begin their exploration and examination into Vanguard and possibly other case files.
HISTORICAL MEMORANDUM
On a bright and early Tuesday morning, cell phones went crazy, social media exploded and local news media erupted with the news of D.C. being under attack. The world became focused on the Capital like never before at the thought of this unlikely event that was unfolding. Emergency operators became quickly overwhelmed with calls of both panicked and terrified individuals. Most operators were unable to understand or comprehend what they were hearing from the incoming phone calls.
The first several calls reported gunfire and military vehicles. Later calls were screams of terror and the cries for help then a dead phone line. The initial report was a lone gunman to several gunmen. It was finally determent by police that it was in fact military weapons, military personnel, and military vehicles attacking the Capital Building, and White House. Later the calls were confirming military personnel on the lawn of the White House and on the steps of the Capital building. Washington D.C. was a scene of complete chaos. Within nine minutes of the first calls to 9-1-1, the operators were now overwhelmed, and the local police also could not keep up with their direct emergency line as well. Shortly after the critical ten-minute mark, the 9-1-1 dispatch system collapsed and failed due to the choking numbers of incoming calls. The system would not be restored for nearly sixty hours.
The First responding officers to arrive on scene consisted of six police cruisers and a total of ten officers that arrived eight minutes after the first report. Within seconds of arrival, the officers were thrust into a life-or-death struggle. Four minutes after arriving on the scene, nine officers would be dead, two would be wounded. The officers all reported that they were currently engaged in a shootout with what appeared to be U.S. military. Later reports would identify the military unit as the Second Marine Division led by Brigadier General Joshua Mathews. At the height of the incident, four thousand three hundred Police, eleven thousand Army National guardsmen and two thousand one hundred civilians would be engaging nearly forty-three thousand Marines in combat on U.S. Capital soil.
For nearly fifty hours, our government, our freedom, our democracy was held hostage by this Marine Unit. We as a nation were on the brink of total collapse.
In memory of: Senator Patrick Sharpe, Congressman Myra Clash, Congressmen Joseph Patterson, and all the Secret Service members and police officers whom their names had to be withheld for national security, may you Rest in Peace.

EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS OF
OPERATION VANGUARD
I saw people shooting, and I was just in shock! It was military and police shooting at each other on Pennsylvania Ave. I was paralyzed and confused. I had no Idea what was happening. My boyfriend grabbed my arm to pull me away from the street. I feel so stupid now when I think about it. I just stood there staring off as bullets were flying all around. I could have been killed.
-Jen Dorson (U.S. Journal, Brent, 2026, p.1)
You could hear the bullets bouncing off the road, sidewalk and the walls of the buildings. You see this stuff on television or the movies, not in person. I saw these trucks just unload all these soldiers, at least twenty of them at a time. They just started to shoot at the police. It was truck after trucks pouring the military out, the police were overwhelmed in minutes.
-Allen Rule (U.S. Journal, Brent, 2026, p.5)
I just didn’t know what to think, you know? The cops were just not enough. The military just had to much fire power. They rolled them over! It was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen
