Sunstar 3 - Francisco Rondon
Grand Chieftess Raena Sunstar ran swiftly and quietly through the Great Forest. The many years of constant training were paying off. The Grand Chief’s elite guards lagged far behind. She had opened up a wide gap one mile ago. There were no trails in this part of Grand Forest; still she dodged left and right, never slowing down. She thought of her friend. Earlier in the day she had received the news she dreaded but knew would come. Raena increased her speed. Soon she came to the side of a small mountain. Looking up she saw a shaman healer from her village exiting the cave that was recessed into the side of the mountain. The man bowed respectively to her and looked directly into her eyes, slowly moving his head from side to side. Raena rushed up and into the cave. She stopped suddenly five feet from her friend. With sadness in her heart she looked at Great Bear. The bear’s eyes were closed, she could see that the bear was laboring to breathe, her huge chest move slowly up and down. Sensors of all kinds were attached to the animal’s body. Two shaman healers bowed and moved out of the cave.
Great Bear,
Raena said softly.
At the sound of her voice, Great Bear seemed to come to life, she rolled to her left side and moving on all fours approached Raena, the wires attached to her body falling off her. Even though the bear had lost a tremendous amount of weight, she still towered over her. The Bear walked toward the entrance to the cave and stopped, turned and looked at Raena.
Alright old friend, let’s go for a walk.
With her left hand on the giant bear, they walked out of the cave and into the forest. After twenty minutes they ran into the Grand Chief’s elite guards. Raena addressed the captain.
Captain Tulan Earthgrower, we will be walking for a while.
Tulan motioned to the rest of the guards. They spread out, keeping a minimum of fifty feet distance from Raena, Great Bear and Captain Tulan. In this pattern they moved for one half hour. Finally they came to a great waterfall. Raena and Great Bear looked down at the rushing water.
It’s quite a fall, when we were young we might have challenged it.
The bear made a low grunt. Great Bear looked down at the bottom of the ten thousand foot waterfall. Raena moved back toward the forest and stopped. The Bear had not moved. For the first time since they had known each other the bear had not followed her. Great Bear looked at Raena and then looked again at the bottom of the waterfall, as a tear slowly fell, Raena sensed a time of passing. Great Bear growled and waved at the air, as if trying to swat a fly. The bear did it again. Raena’s eyes widened. She spoke the words the bear could not.
Your heart you send to me.
Raising her right hand, then opening and closing it and bringing her fist to her heart, she completed the ritual she had always used with her friend.
Your heart in my hand I take with me.
With a final growl Great Bear leaped into the waterfall.
Raena turned and moved away from the fall, as more tears fell she gathered speed and rushed the Forest. She didn’t stop running until she had reached The Rim. She noticed a few classes being conducted and four couples lying on the grass. Avoiding the others she approached the edge of the huge meadow and looked out on the bay.
Suddenly from her left she saw a body being flown out and into the swirling waters below. Astonished she stared at the person falling eighty feet.
Persia?
Raena rushed to the left side of The Rim. She saw a trail that led down a slope. She followed the trail. It led to a cave on the side of the mountain. Moving inside she ran into three of her four children.
Hi mom,
a surprised Troy sheepishly said.
What in the Great Forest are the four of you doing here? Shouldn’t you all be in warrior class?
Alpha’s blue face turned a shade darker, Omega and Troy looked toward the ground.
Omega finally answered her mother’s question.
Mother, Alpha and I were bored, so we convinced Troy and Persia to join us here, we told them we would teach them what they missed.
I’m sure you can Omega, but this, this is dangerous, how did you get Persia to shoot out of the mountain with such speed.
Troy immediately explained.
Mother, Alpha and Omega built some kind of water slide within the mountain, using the flow of water that we helped them divert from a nearby fall. The water picks up speed and we just jump in and it pushes us out. It’s great!
They were joined by a soaking wet Persia. Surprised to see her mother she looked to the cave’s ceiling.
Hello mother.
Raena smiled. Her children never refused to amaze her. She had given birth to her twins, Troy and Persia, had inherited Alpha and Omega from a blue alien, her friend, Ninanthria. Throughout the years they constantly brought joy and amazement to her and Krillian. The superior minds of the Alpha twins surpassed the brightest minds on the planet. She could not compete with their intelligence, but she was still their mother.
I want the four of you to get back to class and stay an extra two hours studying when it is finished.
Her four children left the cave and returned to Apache Village.
The Princess Diana
Returning to the village and after making sure that the children were in their classroom, Raena went to visit her husband, Grand Chief Krillian Battlestorm. He was in a meeting and before she turned to walk back home a guard stopped her.
"Grand Chieftess, your presence is being requested by Commodore Marcus Gunn of Earth Alliance. She followed him to the central command center of Cheyenne. Sitting down in front of a communication terminal she waited until her old friend’s face appeared on the display terminal.
Hi, Marcus, how have you been?
It’s always a pleasure to see you Raena. I’m doing fine, and you and your family?
They’re all ok, is something wrong?
No, no, nothing’s wrong, I just sent you something that I want you to see personally. The Blackhawk should be entering your orbit by tomorrow, your time.
Come on Marcus what is it, you know I don’t like surprises?
Can’t tell, but I’m sure you will like it, Commodore out.
The display went dark. Raena knew she would have trouble sleeping this night.
In the early morning Raena looked out from her balcony. She looked out on a vast field. In the distance was the Great Forest. Looking to her left she noticed Alpha and Omega standing near the gravesite of their Alien mother. Passing quickly through the castle she approached them.
Is something wrong?
While Alpha kept staring at the grave marker, Omega turned toward Raena.
No, mother, somehow we felt called here.
Raena looked at the tombstone, it read.
Nini of Ninanthria
? A.D. to 4045 A.D.
Alpha turned toward Raena.
Second mother, did the first mother speak to you of something of import happening in the future? Omega and I feel we are needed to do something. We do not know what.
Raena’s mind went back to the last day she saw her old friend.
Well, your mother spoke of a Planet of Stars and that someone, something or maybe some program called OAD will lead us there. She said that mankind would have to face the Light. At the time I could not make any sense of what she said, I felt that because of what she went through on the Planet of the Gods, she herself was confused.
Alpha looked to Omega. They seemed to be communicating without words. Omega explained to Raena.
Mother, we must search for the Planet.
How could we, we don’t know where it is or how to contact this OAD?
Alpha took out a small knife and started scraping off dirt that had gathered on the marble tombstone. Turning quickly the tip of his knife nicked Raena, a pinpoint of blood tipped the knife.
Oh, I’m sorry second mother!
As he put the knife away he wiped away the little blood on Raena’s arm.
It’s okay Alpha, I just wish for once you call just mother.
Mother,
continued Omega, we have figured out what OAD is, first can you tell us what happened on 0.A.D.?
Raena was confused. She did not understand what 0 A.D. had to do with anything. She told the children what she knew. When they told her that they needed more information she promised to take them to see the Vicar, on the planet of The One True Religion, whom she was sure would know more.
The new day came and in orbit Raena was transferred to the Blackhawk, after greeting her friends, they led her to the hold of the huge cargo vessel.
Raena looked down and saw a sleek light blue ship. The entry doors opened and the ship’s personnel exited. Looking up at Raena they all saluted.
Astonished Raena looked to Magnolia Dawn, Maggie smiled.
Yep, this is for you Raena, crew and all. The Commodore and the Alliance Council felt it was time for you to have your own ship.
The Level II robot with a human mind, Rote, addressed Raena.
"Raena, she’s got the latest upgrades and is the only ship in the fleet with the Alpha Drive. Before
