Ryan Prentiss and Mary Beth Stanton held each other softly as they danced. Roberta Flack’s, Killing me softly with his song, played in the background.

It was Prom Night and surrounded by their friends, teachers and classmates they shared the first dance. They were as close as two people could get. Only one thought of the other.

Mary Beth buried her head in Ryan’s broad chest and sighed, her dark black hair bearing a bow the color of Ryan’s shirt, light blue. She had known Ryan since elementary school and from the moment they met, at a caretaker’s house when they were both seven, they had become inseparable. She did not understand why, but throughout the years that they had known each other they had shared every moment they could. For her she always felt comfortable around the little boy with light brown hair and eye’s the color of fall. Now that little boy had become a man in whose hands her future begged an answer.

Their parents had both grown up in the little town of Silent Falls, strangers at first, through their children the two families became close.

On a whim Mary Beth would invite herself over to Ryan’s house and never once was she denied. Ryan would do the same. This continued through middle and high schools. Now their school days were behind them and unknown days and lives beckoned.

Mary Beth sang along quietly with Roberta Flack, "He sang as if he knew me in all my dark despair and then he looked right through me as if I wasn’t there."

A few tears fell on Ryan’s light blue shirt. Ryan stopped dancing,

    MB did you say something.

Mary Beth did not look up, the song is not over Ryan. We have to dance until it’s over.

Puzzled, Ryan continued the dance and shared his thoughts with Mary Beth.

You know MB the future is ours and it’s a place where we can make our mark. I’m going to be the greatest man of medicine the world has ever known.

Mary Beth was silent, lost in her thoughts.

She knew that Ryan was number one in their class, easily the most accomplished in all subjects. She had come in second. Though the total number of graduating students was only under 200, both she and Ryan had eclipsed the others in all categories of studies. Their math, reading, comprehension and writing scores were the highest their school, Benjamin Franklin High, ever saw. On the state level no one else averaged higher than Ryan Prentiss. Mary Beth imagined Ryan akin to a wild horse chomping at the bit to escape the little town of Silent Falls and charge the world. The song finally finished and they walked back to their seats. Betty Coltrane was there to greet them.

Hey guys don’t forget we’ll all meet at The e later, Mr. Blainford has a sigh up in its window, Free Burgers and Beer."

Ryan and Mary Beth both nodded, they sat down while Betty went searching for something to eat.

MB, I still like the old name of The e: Yee Olde Coffee Shoppe. I guess somebody got tired of all the e’s and got old man Blainford to change it. It’s still written on top of the door, I hope it stays there forever.

"I do too Ryan, remember the names we gave our
