About this ebook
I’ve known Phillip Morrison for four decades. Each encounter I have had with him has left me impressed with his kindness and wisdom. To know that he has collected his thoughts in a book is welcome news. May God bless this work and all who read it.
– Max Lucado, Teaching Minister, Oak Hills Church, San Antonio;
Missionary and Christian author.
Phillip Morrison is a wonderful storyteller. I regard him as a wise friend of empathy, compassion, and integrity. Phillip has faced more than his share of life’s struggles with faith and dignity. These qualities come through in each of his regular “Encouraging Words” emails which have attracted me and many other readers across the years.
Now, “Encouraging Words” has become “the book” … a collection of “Phillip’s top hits.” Enjoy reading and finding encouraging words in every chapter.
– Lynn Anderson, retired minister, church consultant, and Christian author.
Reading Phillip Morrison’s writing is like a bear hug from dear ol’ Dad. He embraces you with truths that won’t let go. Thank you, Phillip, for gifting us with a lifetime of wisdom we can hold in our hands and refer to over and over again. This book is gift-worthy for anyone.
– Laura Savage-Rains, EdD, Founder of WomensMinistryCoach.com
Author of the multi-award winning book, “God Chose a Woman First.”
I was born at the end of the Great Depression, eight years before the United States became involved in World War II. In our small town, caught between the pain of depression and the horrors of war, almost everybody went to church. Much of the preaching I heard as a small boy was judgmental, harsh, and unforgiving. People were as likely to be scared out of hell as loved into heaven. Although tempted to adopt the pulpit style of older preachers, I soon learned that people were hungry for a more hopeful message. The ministry of Jesus was characterized by the magnetic drawing power of the cross, and his encouragement to “Go, and sin no more” was a welcome message of forgiveness. When my pulpit ministry was curtailed by age and illness, I began the email ministry of encouragement. This book is a compilation of some of those messages. I hope and pray that you will find, in every chapter and every sentence, truly encouraging words.
Phillip Morrison
Phillip Morrison was a “circuit rider” preacher in small churches while still in high school. By the time he got to David Lipscomb College, now Lipscomb University, he was preaching every Sunday at a rural congregation. After college, he and Mary Margaret Grounds married and began their ministry at a small, mostly military church in South Carolina, forming a partnership that lasted until her death almost sixty-two years later. Although they served churches of Christ in Detroit, Miami, Washington (Falls Church, Virginia), Memphis, and Nashville, Phillip always considered himself a non-denominational preacher, calling people to Christ rather than a church. Although encountering multitudes of people with a variety of needs, all had one thing in common: the need for encouragement. Desiring to be a “son of encouragement” like Barnabas (Acts 4:36), Phillip invites you to read this book with encouraging words on every page.

28087.pngDEDICATION
28093.pngThanking all the people who helped make this book possible would require much more than a page, but I thank them all. Special thanks to Ron Thweatt, who taught me everything I know about printing, and to Joel Butts, outstanding graphic artist who designed this book.
This volume is gratefully dedicated to the memory of Mary Margaret Grounds Morrison, my wife for more than sixty-one years, who was my inspiration, my love, and my life.
28087.pngENDORSEMENTS
28093.pngPhillip Morrison uses humankind – our history, our geography, and our stories – to unveil a deep longing we have for Redemption. He reminds us that true Redemption is more than a word to describe our pursuit of goodness. The Father offers Redemption that revealed our brokenness, cost a life, and released us from the power of sin and death. This book reveals that Redemption.
—Dr. Damon Cathey, Executive Principal, Metro Nashville Public School.
Phillip Morrison has enjoyed a full life as Christian minister, pastor, counselor, writer, editor, husband, father, and grandfather. He is a keen observer of diverse real-world experiences, and is a deep, reflective thinker. With open mind and gentle spirit, Phillip has blessed thousands with both his speaking and writing, especially his Encouraging Words
emails. In this collection of several of these writings, readers will receive rich insights and strong encouragement for the living of these days.
—Dr. Perry C. Cotham, retired university professor, pulpit minister, and author of numerous books, including One World/Many Neighbors
and American Rhetorical Excellence
.
If you have read any of Phillip’s Encouraging Words,
you have come away feeling blessed and lifted. As a minister of the gospel, his words provide a unique spiritual perspective designed to encourage self-reflection. Transparency about his personal life – successes, failures, and disappointments – will produce flashes of fond memories in your own life. This book will remind you of the blessings you have been given by God and cause you to share them with others.
—Joseph Tucker, Elder, Church of Christ in Falls Church, Virginia and President of Alpha Printing.
28087.pngFOREWORD
28093.pngI wasn’t born with printer’s ink in my blood, but I loved books almost from infancy. The first book I owned, before I was old enough for school, was a small volume of Bible stories. Soon, with the guidance of Mrs. Latimer, librarian in our small town, I had read almost all the children’s books and as many of the adult books as she thought appropriate.
By the time I got to seventh grade, I was editing the Bulldog Gazette, a role that continued in high school. My favorite after-school-hangout place was Byrd Cain’s print shop where he was owner, publisher, and editor of the weekly Old Hickory News. Mine was strictly a volunteer role as I was too young to have a job. Under Mr. Cain’s tutelage, I learned to handset headlines while he ran the clunky old linotype. I can still read headlines upside down and backward, and I still know how to keep my hands out of an old finger smasher
press.
My friend, teacher, mentor, and idol, Batsell Barrett Baxter, asked me years later to be his hands and feet to develop a magazine for respondents to the Herald of Truth radio and television programs. I jumped at the opportunity to help birth UpReach
magazine and, still later, Wineskins
magazine in partnership with Rubel Shelly and Mike Cope.
Due to age and infirmities, Mary Margaret and I moved to Austin in 2011 to live near one of our daughters. Despite knowing that I could no longer stand and preach, I still felt the call of God on my life. Remembering that the thousands of people I had known in sixty years of ministry all needed encouragement, I began writing and circulating a weekly essay called Encouraging Words. Almost from the beginning, people began asking me to compile some of those writings in a book, and this little volume is the result. Other volumes may follow, even if my children have to publish them posthumously!
After Mary Margaret died, I wandered in such a fog that I suffered several falls, one of which caused an almost fatal broken neck. After months of surgery, rehab, and recovery, I finally got back to my computer only to discover that I couldn’t remember how to do the simplest task. Frequent calls to children and grandchildren began, How do I…?
Those calls are still being made, though not so often.
As you read this and volumes that follow, I thank you and send you this simple message from I Thessalonians 5:11 – Encourage one another.
~ Phillip Morrison

On top of … Corcovado Mountain … stands the 98-foot-tall Cristo Redentor, Christ the Redeemer statue, arms outstretched in both invitation and assurance of the constant presence and protection of Jesus.
Approximately half of the almost eight billion people in the world watched television from Brazil four years ago when both the World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics were contested in Brazil. A few years before that, Mary Margaret and I visited Brazil on a more significant mission. Although preoccupied with getting acquainted with our first grandchild, we still had some time to visit famous attractions, including the iconic Cristo Redentor statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro.
The mansions on the hilltops, some with their own helipads and cantilevered access roads, and the cardboard shanties alike all contain people needing redemption.
On top of the 2,300 foot Corcovado Mountain overlooking the city, on a huge pedestal reaching another 26 feet into the sky, stands the 98-foot-tall Cristo Redentor, Christ the Redeemer statue, arms outstretched in both invitation and assurance of the constant presence and protection of Jesus. Constructed of concrete and steel, and clad in triangular soapstone tiles, the statue has protection from the weather not including the frequent lightning
