Periphery’s constraint was to write unconventional odes featuring the letter “P” about everyday objects and concerns. Eclectics’ poems were also written during three April National Poetry Writing months. Photographs taken by the author are interspersed throughout.

BIRDS OF PARADISE & WINTER SOLSTICE

I woke with blood

in my mouth. Driving

saw steam nymphs

dance along Crystal

Springs shore, gray wraiths

a chorus line swaying

on the water Christlike

defying gravity. Parking

stopped by birds of paradise

called by airhorn of engine

9207 Gilroy bound. I

cross in order

to visit behind the chains

and glass barriers of the jail.

The Day Before a Milestone

or is it a millstone? Haze

saddled on south hills

bare tree limbs show red

or black bones tensile

strength winter ready.

Gingkos already gave up

the ghost their brilliant

yellows crumpled brown

down after a valiant attempt

to cheer.
