INTRODUCTION
T here’s a saying, Never speak of religion or politics,
especially at family gatherings. Inadvertently, you do not hear a saying such as, Never speak of death.
Why is that? There are strong opinions defending arguments over religious and political issues. Yet death has no argument. It’s a fact.
When someone dies, the usual response is, What happened?
Knowing the facts as to the cause of someone’s death gives us a degree of insight—false as it may be—that if we stay clear of the deceased’s circumstances, we can escape that manner of death.
When I was nine years old, my father, James, suddenly died at the age of thirty-eight. He had been an alcoholic and scared me at times. One afternoon while I was playing with my dolls in my room, my dad’s spirit came to me. From the corner wall and chair area, my dad appeared in full body form, six feet tall, very handsome, dark curly hair, and big brown eyes. I wasn’t scared; I felt a calmness. My dad said that he was sorry he scared me when he had been drinking, and he would never scare me again. He asked if we could be friends. As he did so, he put out his big hand. I put my little hand in his. His hand was so soft. We shook hands.
Years later, when my daughter, Natalia, was six months old, her father left for a military assignment. One night I was awakened by a calm male voice calling my name. I sat up in bed and saw my twenty-two-year-old cousin Jim’s spirit walking from the hallway into my bedroom. He was wearing a bright-blue suit. He smiled and said, Hello, Sunny.
Hi, Jim. Nice to see you.
Jim continued walking past the foot of my bed and exited right through the wall.
The next morning, Jim’s older brother, Francis, called. He and his wife, Marie, and their two children had just returned from military duty in Germany. He said base housing wasn’t yet available and asked if I had any room for them. I told him that Jim had checked out my place the night before and must have told him to call because I had lots of space and would love the company.
One day, several years later, my sisters and their four children left our mother’s house after a fun-filled visit. While standing at the stove, pan-frying steaks, Mum said that she always thought I would be the one who had the most children. I said, I’m thankful for our daughter and her three older stepbrothers. Such is life.
My mother said, Well I’ll just have to go to heaven and send you a baby.
I thanked her and said that would be a one-way trip and a bit drastic. We laughed.
A while later Mum had a stroke. As she lay in the hospital bed, my aunt Joan and I—she on her knees to the left of Mum, and I on my knees to Mom’s right—were saying the rosary. Suddenly, standing at the end of the bed, was Jesus in His beautiful blue-and-white robes with His medium-length brown hair and a brown beard. To His left stood beautiful Mother Mary, demur, white-flawless skin, and dressed all in white with a sky-blue veil. On Jesus’s right was my dad in a dark suit, white shirt, and black tie.
I asked, Aunt Joan, do you see anyone standing at the end of the bed?
What? What are you talking about?
Then she told my mum it was time to go be with James, my
