Adventures from Squnch Valley: A Companion Guide and Activity Book to Tales from Squnch Valley by Barbara Ayosea Morse
()
About this ebook
This guide and activity book complements Barbara Ayosea Morse’s Tales from Squnch Valley. It is for parents, teachers, child-care workers, counselors, and therapists who work with children of all ages and abilities across cultures. The book offers movement, visualization, art, and writing exercises while also enhancing language development and social skills.
Though written for children in grades K-6, activities may also be adapted for younger children, adolescents, and even adults. The Squnch tales and related activities are appropriate for use in both traditional and home-school settings, as well as for distance-learning. Staff in outpatient and residential treatment centers will also find them to be an excellent resource.
Because of tensions among various groups in our society, books with universal characters, such as Squnches, are greatly needed. The Squnch tales teach children the value of living in harmony with one another and with nature in today’s challenging and ever-changing world.

Allen earned a BAE and Med in Education at the University of Florida and a PhD in Psychology at the United States International University in San Diego (now Alliant University). She has worked as a teacher and psychologist in florida and California. She also teaches Tai-chi Chuan and is the author of Awakening to the Spirit Within: Eight Paths and The Necklace.

About the Authors
Acknowledgments
Adventures from Squnch Valley was written to be a Companion Guide and Activity Book to Barbara Ayosea Morse’s Tales from Squnch Valley: Where Imagination and Reality are Woven into the Fabric of Life. There would be no need for a companion book without the delightful Squnch stories that Morse published in her book and the related activities that she shared from her work with children over the years. Gratitude also goes to art specialist, Susan Rondeau for sharing many of the activities that she created to go with Squnch stories. Other activities in the book have been gathered from workbooks that Morse, Rondeau, and Allen created and distributed to teachers and therapists in Squnch presentations over the years.
Thanks to Robin Mayfield, Diana Rose, Krisie Morgan and Jane MacKenzie for their individual efforts and support in furthering the Squnch experience so that it reaches as many people as possible. Thanks to the staff at AuthorHouse for publishing this book and for allowing us to use the same cover and many of the illustrations from Tales from Squnch Valley, including some original photographs by Pamela Smith Allen.
A.%20IMG_2600.JPGSqunch Vocabulary
There is an unusual vocabulary in Tales from Squnch Valley to describe natural elements and characters in the stories. Since these words also appear in Adventures from Squnch Valley, their descriptions have been presented here to acquaint you with the names before you encounter them in either of the books.
As you will see after reading the following descriptions, the characters in Tales from Squnch Valley are playful and innocent, making mistakes and learning from their mistakes just as all children do. Likewise, the Squnches live in harmony with the natural elements in their valley, teaching children that it is important to respect the environments in which they live.
Squnch: An innocent new being, emerging from its shell for the very first time; a metaphor for the innocent child within all humans, no matter their age
Squnching: Using the Squnch stories and activities in an experiential manner
Squnch Shell: A vehicle that transports the Squnches into Squnch Valley; a metaphor for the protective shell that humans can imagine around themselves when they need to be alone and protected from the outer world
Squnch Valley: A beautiful imaginary valley, where the Squnches come out of their shells and grow and develop under the protection of the Wind; a metaphor for a safe inner landscape that exists within the imagination of human beings who choose to access it
Lavender Sea: The sea in which the Squnches were created within their shells and which washes them into Squnch Valley as a result of a storm caused by the Wind; a metaphor for the place of beginnings and endings where opposites come together in harmony and where treasures abide
Purple Velvet Hills: The hills that surround Squnch Valley on three sides, with the Lavender Sea on the fourth; a metaphor for protection and safety
The Wind: A character who lives in the Purple Velvet Hills and blows into Squnch Valley to play; the cause of a storm that brings the Squnch shells into the valley; a protector and guide for the Squnches when they come out of their shells to live in the valley; a metaphor for intuitive awareness
Soft Green Grass and Flavorful Flowers: Grass that covers the valley floor and the edible flowers that grow in it; a metaphor for nature and the nurturance it provides; Squnches learn to replace what they use by replanting seeds from the flowers
Whispering Waterfall: A waterfall that tumbles from one of the Purple Velvet Hills and knows all the secrets of the world; a metaphor for a place to share dreams and
