    Author’s Note

I DECIDED TO WRITE THIS book attempting to find THE TRUTH. I am optimistic or naive enough to think that people will comprehend my Quest for perfection within the human race.

From the time as far I could remember, I have repulsion to cruelty. As a child I could not comprehend why? Why any kind of human being could be so cruel.

Growing up I became aware. This kind of people, are weak with little intelligence’s and ugly souls. And to cover-up their shabbiness they strike out like venomous snakes destroying their victims. Is it jealousy? How can they live with themselves, causing so much pain and destruction to society, and the planet?

The ones with lack of intelligence: oblivious of the consequences beyond their greed and disregard for humanity. Not comprehending the damage that they produce to humans, animals and the environment! Destroying our planet! I may be naive to think that we are all interconnected to the Universe as a whole.

My curiosity and quest for knowledge to find the truth I put this book together with my story, hoping to find the answers that somehow dissecting my life’s happenings, I could possibly find the mysteries ‘To see if in some way I could achieve and figure-out some of my many questions? In many cases, hitting a brick wall sort of speak. With many more questions.

Being and admire of Albert Einstein, That have left as with his incredible legacy, that at the moment we are all ingoing. Starting from the Lacer age and the Quantum Technology is up-on-us.

I am a great believer that in the very near future, we as hole will recognize and work together in the benefit for this beautiful Blue Planet, and in returned for our salvation, and well being.

This planet that we call Earth is the only one in our solar system that could support life as we know-it. All the others are in their beginning stages of forming sort-of-speak. Mars is the only one that has a chance to become a planet that could support life? As we know it.

Why are we so ruthless? We only have this very beautiful Blue Planet that we call Earth!

    Synopsis

IN SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH, a phone call from Spain sends Adrianne across the Atlantic Ocean looking for answers that had haunted her through-out her life.

Settling down on her seat, day dream about all her childhood memories: Images flashed across her mind’s eye. The uncertainty! Of her true identity throughout the decades drew Adrianne into a realm beyond imagination.

She drowns her feelings by constantly achieving the impossible, often falling prey to her own desires and the cunning schemes of the unpredictable man that invaded her life.

She became a very successful real estate developer in a business that is usually considered a man’s domain. She remembers her first real estate venture. She was twenty one. It was in the most fashionable place in Toronto, Cumberland Street in the heart of Yorkville.

Early on Adrianne revealed her knack for making a profit, and bringing an entrepreneurial spirit to classical architecture, which became a part of her legend. At the same time she had been an art dealer with art galleries in key areas of the city.

A long list of successful business ventures was Adrianne’s life throughout the late seventies and eighties. A series of projects was begun that contributed to the development of a new form of architecture recovering certain values for the traditional city. This was the start of her general wish for the city to recognize that its communities need to be defined not only by beauty, but also have functionality. The works of Adrianne belonged to post-modernism, where buildings were recognized for their value rather than efficiency and exploitation. Her creations, however, cannot be understood in quantifiable terms. Rather they are expressions of our world: of things and places.

Looking out her window leaving the city she noted the sky-scrappers rising silently out of the ground. Leaving the peaked architecture and their silhouettes behind, flying over the Ocean watching the sun slip behind the liquid horizon, her thoughts were on her childhood years.

From as early as she could remember, she was a very tiny baby riding on a train in someone’s arms being lifted toward s the light in the train compartment.

Continuing her day dreaming about all the memories: starting from powerful (uncle) Eladio: the people that had shaped her life. Family?

Her best childhood—friend, Tomas! She was exhausted with all the thoughts twirling around in her head. Looking back she could see the errors that she had committed. If she just could have just accepted that life that she so desperately wanted to leave behind, where would she be today? Would she be happier?

The way she remembered, it or thought she remembered it—may have been inaccurate.

Surely, it was excessively simplified. There was nevertheless, a kind of truth to it which later events confirmed. Adrianna was too young to remember it all. Still, she had put together, as children will from strange bits and pieces, a plausible story.

    Dedication

I dedicate this book to my very dear friend Dharma Rattan.

The person which for over 4 decades had taking the place of my mother.

And have giving me so much wisdom trough-out my life, and when parting

From this world she had the nurse request to call me, and I did drop everything.

Running to her side, holding my hand to her last breath!

    Chapter 1

THE FAMILY HAD VAST PROPERTIES and a magnificent house set among gardens and orchards. It was build in an early Gothic style and beyond the gardens and orchards were acres and acres of vineyards. In the far distance the mountains rose to the sky and were covered with heather and chestnut trees. When she was a little older, she and her ‘sister’ Lolly would play amongst the gigantic mountains and the rushing river.

Uncle Eladio and grand mama were always there for her. On the other hand, Adrianne had not recollection of her parent’s. Still the ritual of the events that had made up her everyday life resounded throughout in her mind. The breakfast room with the sunlight was an authentic memory. The other, the more important part of her childhood, she had to fashion from the detritus of overheard remarks. The process stretched itself out for some years, during which time her version of the events jelled into a kind of legend; kind of myth. Uncomfortable, and presumably for a reason that she did not understand, she was not sure exactly why, but it was clear to her, that the truth about Adrianne was a secret fiercely kept by all her family members.

    *     *     *

The leaves and low-hanging branches seem to want to cling to her; the damp earth attached itself to the soles of her shoes. She walked slowly and quietly through the garden were the ‘(Baby Angel)’ Sculpture rose on a pedestal. The east gates were nearby and she ducked herself behind them so no one would see her. Out she would run toward s the forest.

Tomas catching up to her at the edge of the boulder! She darted when he tried to grasped her around the waist, then swung her body away from him, toward the purple mountains full of heather, she climb higher and slowly higher until she reached a huge standing stone curved almost to a point at the top. Holding her breath, she drew herself to the narrow crown and stood, balanced precariously. The wind came up beside her in a cry of welcome. She spread her arms wide so she could balance better.

Adrianne smiled as she swayed in the force of the wind. Just then she saw Tomas at the base of the stone. He reached up to her and called: Come down Adrianne before the wind takes you away. The tension in his voice, the fear in his eyes brought her back to her senses.

What madness has made you so reckless today? he asked. She touched his arm briefly.

I don’t know, she whispered. All at once I couldn’t seem to stay still.

She turned to meet his gaze, glanced once more at the high, narrow boulder and shivered. Which was more dangerous, the fall from the wind or the shadows below? We must go, Adrianne said.

They rose to wander back across the moor until they made their way through the tangled forest, now up the rugged stone hill that led to the gig house. She spoke as Tomas gazed out into the distance: I have to leave by September. I am going to Madrid, to school and to my parents.

Tomas replied, I never heard you talk about your parents before?I don’t remember them. "Uncle Eladio is assuring me that I will come back at the end of the school year.

Tomas felt that he had to tell her what was in his mind, his fear of losing her.’ ‘My intentions for the future are to be a diplomat, not what my father likes me to be. He would like me to be a doctor and take over his practice. I know how much you like to see the world and all I want is to make you happy and when we are all grown up, and you’re my wife, we will be able to see the world together." Adrianne stood hypnotize by the look in his beautiful blue eyes.

Tomas revelation threw Adrianne off balance. She felt joy, embarrassment. She wasn’t sure what she felt.

My uncle Eladio had planned a very exciting trip for the two of us Adrianne tried to sooth Tomas pain; the same pain she was feeling.

We are going by horse though the mountains! She continued, My aunt and cousin Lolly are going to the health spa for one month. Tomas asked Why are you going through the mountains? Adrianne said. My uncle wants to show me the villages and its inhabitants. Adrianne’s curiosity about what was on the other side was soon to be answered. She wanted to turn away, but Tomas touched her arm. He felt he was already missing her. Your eyes are so alive, so radiant. I have never known another with so powerful a gaze he said leaning on the stonewall staring at the mountain, which was veiled in a light blue mist. He was silent for so long that Adrianne thought his spirit had left her. I would like to travel together during our life time and see the world. Adrianne stood hypnotized by the look of his eyes too, revealing the spirit of his soul. They said good-bye and Adrianne returned home.

Clara the head housekeeper was waiting for her, and she was flustered You are going to be scolded’ said Clara. I am sorry I am late, I hope my uncle isn’t in yetMay I know where the ‘Princess’ was wandering today, and with whom?" The head maid stood watching her eyes, her face which was expressionless except for her eyebrows which were arched in disapproval.

Your bath is ready young lady Without a word and perfectly composed, Adrianne followed the woman into her own apartment, were a tub of hot water stood waiting. She slipped off her clothes, and the other maid took them away. Adrianne stepped into the tub, where the warm water caressed her body as the steam rose in comforting clouds around her. Adrianne began to talk to her. Is my grand mama in her apartment? No she is in the dining room.Clara! Do you know that I will be going to school in September? Yes I do, my dear and we will all miss you, but it is only for a few months. You will be back before you know it.Do you know my parents?"Yes I do. Your aunt is your mother’s sister. Adrianne did not go any further, she had a feeling she wasn’t going to receive much more information. Dressing up quickly she moved through the corridors and down the stairs to the dining hall.

Glancing out the windows that opened onto the courtyard she could see through the open velvet curtains, the mimosa palm-trees. They were in full bloom displaying their beauty and intense scent. She found her aunt and cousin and they smiled sweetly at her. Her uncle wearing a stern face was sitting at the head of the table. Mademoiselle Leticia was sitting next to cousin Lolly. Her uncle said Come here I have not seen you in two days. He touched her cheek and gave her a kiss. She clung to his neck and gave him a big hug. What king of mischievousness had you been up today? Nothing she replied. Adrianne was restless after an endless dinner.

She turned when Lolly spoke to her, nodded as she discussed her school for next year, smiled at her and her harmless jokes, and wished she was as far away from the dining table. She wanted to be outside where the air was fresh and the night unclouded. The tiny nagging part of her mind that rebelled against etiquette rules and restraints reviled in the apparent freedom of the peasant. It was that time of the year when they celebrate the fierce surge of life from Mother Nature.

Lolly, her cousin, was speaking. Adrianne put a finger in her mouth.

Adrianne though she saw a movement in the forest. A flicker of light among the shadows, but the mist had settled along the ground, obscuring her vision. The veil of moisture parted and she saw a flash of red. She peered more intently, determined to catch sight of whatever had made those flashes of light and color. Suddenly a young man emerged from among, the trees moving swiftly. He ran, his head thrown back, and crossed near them, with a graceful leap. Adrienne blinked, shook her head, and looks again, but he had already disappeared, faded without a sound into the mist.

Then she was listening to her cousin’s conversation. They have some barbaric traditions of lighting bonfires at the end of the summer. They are a bunch of pagans worshipping fairies and dragons. Mademoiselle Leticia told me. Adrianne was looking at her cousin with wide eyes, and Lolly was very please to catch her attention. They are different indeed if you asked me, half-naked, men and woman running through the countryside. Appalling is what I think of it if you want to know the truth. Adrianne was looking at her with enquiring eyes and said I think She paused uncertainly, but plunged ahead, I think they look rather charming. Perhaps things are different for them. Adrianne brushed the windblown hair out of her face, and tried to convince her cousin to go and see the bonfires with her. In a way, I would like to see what they are doing, wouldn’t you like to go and see? I am sure I would like it. Lolly replied. You would probably faint dead away, my dear Lolly said. I am sure I would like-it said Adrianne her frown disappeared when she heard the distant song of the bagpipe. Adrianne felt a flutter of excitement. For the first time she was aware of what was going on with the peasants. Adrianne took hold of Lolly Lest go, they don’t have to know that a brisk walk after dinner will do you good.

Adrianne mischievousness was giving her a wild look. They could see the glare of the bonfires and hear the singing. Adrianne’s heart began to beat in anticipation as she watched the dancers circle the flames. She leaned forward to try to catch some of the words they were chanting.

Do you hear? Lolly demanded in consternation, her good intentions forgotten. They’re calling to their heathen gods to protect them as if She spit and could not go on.

As if what? Adrianne asked Lolly opened her mouth and close-it again. As the devil himself were looking over their shoulders.

Perhaps he is Adrianne suggested mildly. Perhaps that’s why the need protection. Adrianne was transfixed by the spectacle. She moved closer to the edge of the trees, flowing in concentration. Once or twice she thought she saw the head-housekeeper’s daughter. She saw how she threw back her head in pure joy. Free and unencumbered, she danced and sang, unaware and uncaring of what anyone thought. They are unable to resist the call of the wind Lolly said We must go now, if they notice that we are not in, we will be scolded. They returned climbing the vines that reaches their balconies, removed their shoes as not to make any noise, and quietly got into their beds. Eladio sighed with relief, when he saw them coming.

    *     *     *

The next day Adrianne and her uncle Eladio saddled their horses and taking very few clothes were on their way. They travelled all day and by dusk they arrived at the first village.

The village had a very primitive housing, and scenery to Adrianne that seemed almost biblical.

Something of another age! The orchards were endless of fruit trees, figs were prominent, lemons oranges and lots of cherry, apples and pears. Every inch of the land was terraced.

Pines and cypress grew in wild profusion on the steep mountainside. They produced everything from honey to all kinds of vegetables, and every animal had a very healthy diet. The people all seemed to be so happy, working the wool producing sweaters, socks and blankets. The contrast just on the other side of the mountains was amazing.

That year Adrianne learned about the various levels of human status. She also realizes that there were differences between the peasants and themselves.

The next morning one of the women was in the room when Adrianne was awakening. Later she learned that she was Adrianne’s wet nurse. Smiling she approached the bed and touched Adrianne’s checks. "Dear Lord!!! You are so beautiful! Without concern and a degree of boldness she gave her a big bear hug. Maria prepared all sort of healthy country specialists for Adrianne and her uncle.

The month went by quickly as they travel from village to village. Adrianne had an enchanted time with simple things like running, chasing butterflies and climbing fruit trees.

    *     *     *

The 747 was lost in a sea of cumulus clouds just as she was about to have dinner. The air plane attendant was calling her. She was shaken out of a deep reverie. Yes she said. "Are you all right? We should be out of this storm soon.

Adrianne took a deep breath and went back to her memories

    *     *     *

September was here; all Adrianne’s luggage was ready for loading into the large Mercedes.

Adrianne finished all her goodbyes. Eladio was holding her close to him with his arm around her shoulders. He helped her into the car, and sat next to her. Her eyes full of tears ready to spill. As the chauffeur began to drive, Adrianne looked back, and they all waved to her, as they squinted up at the sun. She saw the clouds racing toward the house and she knew that soon it would rain, and then after that would clear again, and the sun would warm the fields. She looked back at the house, but she could not see it anymore. The ride to Madrid was filled with advice from her uncle. As they drove along the highway through the winding country side, the road was frightening on many occasions. Under the hazy sun they moved, looking down on the deep cliffs, and she felt a knot in her stomach.

The dreadful feeling continued, and her wandering dreams of whatever was beyond the mountains did not seem so appealing after all. Going to school was frightening. For her early education was given to her and her cousin Lolly by Mademoiselle Leticia, their governess. She looked at her watch, and although the drive was monotonous to her, she wished that they never arrive in Madrid. She was shifting on her seat remembering Tomas as he leaned against the wall to gaze at the mountains beyond their reach. With a sigh, with hope, a smile and secret dread, Adrianne sank back into her seat. Arriving in Madrid, her parents, full of smiles looked at her. They tried to hug her, to make her comfortable. She clung to her uncle, clutching to him fiercely. That night, Adrianne sat in her room with the door closed as the shadows grew and multiplied around her. She thought of her family and shivered, weeping quietly into her pillow.

    Chapter 2

FRANCISCO STOOD NEARLY SIX FEET tall with olive-brown eyes that had a piercing quality about them. He had a noble demeanor, fair complexion and light brown hair. His wife Flora was medium height; a fragile beauty, and both were in their mid twenty’s. Adrianne remember her aunt’s (Eladio’s wife) explanation to her, trying to make her understand her parent’s situation as a little girl. Your parents, they met when they were at university, years later they married before they finished when you came along, they brought you here so we could take care of you.

Looking up to her aunt Adrianne did not asked further questions. She had a feeling that she was not going to learn much more. Because of Francisco’s light brown hair, when he proudly met with friends, they would try to connect the resemblance to Adrianne with her blond hair and very fare completion. Adriane remembering staring at her father, examining him, trying to find the lines that marked their resemblance, supposing that they were visible like the lines in the porcelain pictures over the mantel Years after of course, she found that the lines of their mouth and eyes did not correspond, and she looked different in other ways too. Her childish version of the events turned out to be true, cruelly true.

Adrianne brought tenderness to Flora. Francisco on the other hand tried his best to be a good father, taking Adrianne to museums especially on educational functions. Other times they went to the theatre and Concert Halls. On weekends, they would all go as a family to the lake near Madrid sailing in the small yacht. They tried to make her feel at home, yet deep down; they felt that the little one with the melancholic look wasn’t happy in her new lifestyle. However, they felt a glow of warmth with the hopeful thoughts that this will pass. At first, school was not an institution where Adrianne would shine. She was a conscientious worker and very soon the headmistress was impress with how well she could read and how clearly she could write, and how very determined Adrianne was to do well in all her other subject. She excelled in music and dancing, ballet and folk dances. In the months that followed, Adrianne felt that Madrid, she would die if she had to live out her life in that large, stone and cement covered city. She missed her family so much. The family that she thought was part of her. Like all other children, she began to count the days to her holidays, dreaming she would go back, north in the mountains, with her family, with Tomas. Flora peered at her daughter uneasily thinking, Adrianne was so stubborn. She did not try to fit in, yet she must get lonely. She felt a stirring of compassion that she dared not express. Adrianne did not shrink away but looked directly at her, although she did not really see Flora

During Adrianne’s second year in Madrid upon her return from the North she had a surprise. One early afternoon the headmistress came to take Adrianne to her office. She had a visitor. Yvette St. Germaine.

When she entered the office with the headmistress, this beautiful lady stared at her, and seeming to repress her emotions, she threw her arms around Adrianne. The head mistress left the office discretely.

I am a distant relative, I live in Paris, but now that I have opened an Alt Cultured in Madrid, I live here. I have known you as a very little baby less than 5 months old. She reached for Adrianne’s hand and pulls her toward the large mirror on the fireplace mantel. Their images were on the mirror. Adrianne felt shivers as she saw how very similar they looked. She did not have the confidence to ask.

I have a large clientele, and they have children including Queen Elisabeth. I would like for you to be my inspiration for the new collection. You could come after school and on Saturdays. I have it arranged with your parents. You don’t have to worry.

    *     *     *

I’m going to Madame Yvette’s. I’ll be back later said Adrianne. Madame’s car was waiting for her, and as the chaffer opened the door, he said Good afternoon, Miss. Good afternoon Javier, Adrianne Replied, How was your day at school today? Do you like it more? Are the other girls still giving you trouble?Yes they are. At recess they pushed me into a puddle of water, and my uniform got dirty. Those girls are just jealous. It should not bother you, try to ignore them and they will stop

They soon arrive at a small palace whose architecture Adrianne loved. She crossed the flagged courtyard and at last reached the front of the house where ornaments of marble firework and many arches curved gracefully around the ancient building. Adrianne was soon distracted by the colored tile around the door frame. Madame and her now-dead husband had bought the house from a minor Spanish prince years ago. Yvette opened the door and threw her arms around the girl. Thank God you’ve come!! I was in desperate need of relief today.

Yvette’ gown was bright blue, green and turquoise with a little splash of dangerous red, and as she led Adrianne down many corridors into the main room, she chatter incessantly. Adrianne was not really listening. She was thinking about her parents, how different they were. She pushed her uneasy thoughts away as she approached the dining room, smiling, as always, when she saw the huge Chippendale table.

They enter into the summerhouse, Yvette’s favors place among the gardens whit thin, graceful pillars, and a curved roof, with white wicker furniture covered with pillows. There were rows of cypress and acacia, and cherry trees, all kept fresh by underground wells, climbing roses, and magnificent bougainvillea plants that blanketed the white walls with vivid red, a traditional Mogul stile. But the secret of this garden was the water. Adrianne loved this place more than any other, including, the big house where she grow-up. She removed her new leather shoes, and dipped her feet with a sigh into the water.

She sat at the edge of the pool. It was a hot September day. If there is a paradise on earth, it is here. What would I do without you Yvette? she sighed. So often you have given me heaven. What a lovely way to put it. Adrianne opened her eyes in consternation at the sound of a strange voice. An older man stood across the pool in from of her. His long, wavering image reflected in the water. Strange that he should be here as Yvette allowed few people into her home. When she did they were always the ones who understood the beauty and the arts, no strangers. Asencio Asenag, may I present Miss Adrianne Vales, Yvette said in her most formal tone, pleased by her little surprise.

Adrianne found her tongue was dry and she could not speak. The older gentleman smiled revealing his aristocratic cheekbones and clear cherry eyes. She was transfixed by the look of admiration in those eyes. She stared at his image in the water while it blurred and changed. The man also seemed to have lost his voice in the rush and murmur of the water. Well Yvette said. I realize this is a house where tradition is not often maintained, but I do think you Might speak a word or two of greeting to one another. It’s the thing to do you know. I find silence so depressing. She laughed, the man laughed, and in spite of herself, Adrianne smiled. Terribly sorry, the gentleman said, his hat in his hand. It’s just that she took me by surprise.

He meant it; Adrianne could see that. Perhaps he was not like other people who said what they thought you wanted to hear. I was rather taken by surprise myself. I expected to be alone with Yvette.

If you’ve sufficiently recovered from your mutual surprise, Yvette interjected, then let’s sit in the gazebo and Sofia will bring us refreshments. Adrianne stood up, her wet skirt clinging to her legs, as the gentleman looked discreetly away and followed Yvette. Soon the three were seated in the summerhouse shadowed by plantain and acacias trees. The large green leaves of the acacias shivered in the breeze, so they seemed to whisper cool promises overhead. Among the branches, the birds chattered, flying overhead in and out of view. Adrianne sat on a tiled bench while the other two chose to enjoy the white wicket chairs with bright embroidered pillows. Sofia came with a platter of dried dates and figs, almonds and musk melon with the most incredible Jamon Serrano and a pitcher of fresh water. After a few hours Adrianne said, I must go home, I have to finish my home work for school. Would you like me to give you a lift? Miss Vales, I am going in your direction.

Adrianne looked at Yvette with an enquiring look, and she nodded her approval. Yes, thank you. I appreciated your kindness. Mr. Asencio, replied Adrianne.

Outside there was a stretch Alfa Romeo, and the chauffeur ran to open the door. When they were in, the old gentleman gave instructions to the driver. My dear, what kind of plans have you for your future? Do you expect to become a philanthropist? I am not sure, there so many things which I would like to do, Adrianne answered.

I’m a chemist; I began with a Pharmacy, but toward the middle of my career I made the decision to create beauty products. Have you notice my products? He asked looking at her eyes attentively. He realized her confusion. I don’t use beauty creams, she said. Of course you are too young for that, but in a few years you will discovered them.Do you have any plans for the summer? No sir, I am going home to my family. I thought your parents are here!! There was a long pause. Adrianne finally spoke, But the rest of my family is up North, and I spend my holidays with them.I would like to use you for promotions and advertising, and be the beauty Queen for my company. It won’t take too much of your time, and we could arrange the photo sessions for the weekends and this way it will not interfere with your schooling. Adrianne nodded. I promise to keep in touch.

They arrive at Adrianne’s building, and the doorman was looking curiously at the stretch car and its owner. He greeted her with. Good afternoon Miss!!

    Chapter 3

ADRIANNE FINALLY GREW TO LIKE her life in Madrid. The school, ballet, piano, and especially her relationship with Yvette filled her life with happiness. She spent much time at the Alt Couture and on the runway on Saturdays passing the children clothing collection. At her school she was too advanced in ballet so she was transferred to Don Antonio to continue her learning. Antonio himself was the number one dancer in Spain. It was a great privilege to learn in his school.

The studio was situated in a Palace just behind La Grande Via on a street called Calle de Luna.

Today, although the Palace is less personal, without the past owners, the air of grandeur still remains unrivalled against the beauty of Renaissance Architecture. The high vaulted ceilings set the right surroundings to inspire the tenants.

Yvette on many occasions took Adrianne with her for fittings at the Palace on Calle Velázquez where Queen Elizabeth often stayed in Madrid. Adrianne remembers practicing to curtsy prettily to be in front of the Queen. Yvette would present her as her niece, and wink to Adrianne who stayed near by playing with the Queen’s dogs. By their conversation Adrianne picked up bits and pieces that made her believe that Yvette herself was from the line of the French Royal Family. Other clients were Merle Oberon and Rita Hayworth, who was marrying the Aga Khan.

At ballet school she was a fast learner and she became the teacher’s pet. The quality of her movements was very impressive. Among all these events, Eladio would pay a visit coming down from the North, on average once a month, and sometimes he would stay for almost a week. They would hang out together and go to restaurants and concerts. He was very proud of her. Good day, Don Antonio. How are things in your school? Enrique Navarro was asking the professor about his students with that cliquishness he always showed. Despite the trivial tone, he went on saying. "I just got a new student. You should see her. She is something else!

Enrique Navarro came to visit the class and he nodded and winked at the maestro with approval. He had a pad and began to draw sketches while the girls were dancing. He told Adrianne to stop at his studio. He was doing a series of ballerinas.

Don Antonio caught Adrianne near the doorway as she was heading to Enrique Navarro’s studio. Both studios were in the same Palace. Miss Vales. I will tell you a little about Enrique Navarro. He is the first artist to be showing in a Museum before he is dead. His works are in the Museum de Bellas Artes and if he did a painting of you, it would make you immortal!!

The studio of this famous artist was next door to the ballet school. Both studios were on the same floor in the Palace.

A few years went by with this routine and it was time for Adrianne to go back up North.

June was here and Adrianne was getting ready for her journey. Her excitement grew with every passing day. This year Eladio could not come for her. Instead she would make her journey by train.

Adrianne took her seat in her compartment on the Express. Wheels turning, engine pulling hard, the train pulled away from the station. The compartment was locked by the supervisor as a safety measure because of her age. A few hours later it will be converted into a bed. Early the next morning she would arrive at her destination and her family would all be at the station to greet her.

Beside the train fields, towns and cities passed by in a blur. Finally turning into the sun, the train began its long winding journey though the mountains, passing cascades and rivers. Her excitement of seeing everybody again after her long absences kept Adrianne from sleeping knowing that most of the family would be impatient to see her arrive at the station.

Their eyes were full of tears and she received hugs and kisses, then more hugs and kisses showing how much she was missed. Her luggage was put into the car with 4 family members and Eladio and her rode beside it with their horses. Adrianne was back in paradise. Going up the street she sort of looked in the direction of Tomas’ house, and wondered if he knew that she was back.

Reaching the house the servants were all outside full of shy smiles as they curtsied. Eladio was not pleased. She is the same girl you all knew as an infant. I want everyone to treat her exactly as you did in the past. I don’t want anyone to make her a stranger in her home!! Eladio was particularly happy with her achievements and it came to the point of bringing Lolly’s jealousy to a dangerous edge.

They all came near and touched her while giving their greetings. Adrianne felt relief. Going into her apartment, she looked out the window and saw a shadow. It was a tall young man she believed was Tomas. Her heart jumped out her chest. She wanted to go down the vines from her balcony like she did as a little girl. But now she was embarrassed to do that anymore. She went out on the balcony and called him. He was behind the gates but after he heard the familiar comfort of her voice he felt at ease and came through the front door gates. She ran through the corridors and down the stairs. She wanted to put her arms around him, but stopped herself.

She had to look up at him. You are so tall she said. She hardly reached his chin. His eyes were brilliant with love. He stood in a trance as if she was an apparition finally she made herself move forward, stretched out a hand, and touched his hand. He ran his fingers down her arms, without moving his gaze away from her eyes. Eladio entered the room, and coughed. Adrianne swallowed dryly. Have you seen how tall Tomas has grown?

Yes, he is taller than his father. Eladio said. And his father was the tallest person in town.

Tomas smiled, You know what happens to weeds, they grow nonstop he said with a laugh.

Adrianne said, I would like to see the garden. Will you accompany me? Eladio saw the two going into the garden and smiled. They walk under the Mimosas trees, past the rose garden and toward the wall covered with ivy. They reached a big fig tree and under it they felt they were out of everyone’s view. Tomas pulled her body against his and kissed her deeply.

She trembled in his arms as he ran his hands up her back and rested his hands on her head, threading his fingers in her hair, drinking her scent. He did all this almost with an angry manner.

Being in fashion and having her face displayed in the beauty counters had made her a star in town. Tomas said.

Everyone is talking about you and your face in all the stores, she pulled back. You are angry?

I’m not, but I feel uncomfortable he said I’m jealous of people looking at you. Adrianna tried defending herself. I do know that it is a job like any other. You help your dad in the clinic with patients. That’s your job. Mine is modeling!

I understand, but I can’t help the feeling of discomfort knowing there are men wanting you. I know that I will have to learn how to live with it. I also have not given up the idea of becoming a diplomat. She bent her head deep in thought. And a single hasty glance seemed to dive into his eyes.

Tomas you would make a wonderful doctor. Your father is counting on you, patients love you. I heard their comments and compliments. Tomas pulled her back to him, one hand holding her head the other down encircling her body. Lord He said softly. All of the feelings, all of the searching and reflecting, and a lifetime for him of yearning came together at that moment. I love you His voice was a little shaky. You look stunning in the purest sense of that word.

His admiration was genuine, she could tell. And it swirled over her entire body and soul. La Fiesta de San Antonio is tomorrow. Would you be my date? Tomas moved his arm farther around her waist and pulled her closer. She could feel his legs and whole Body especially the muscles of his shoulders through the light cotton shirt. He bent slightly to gaze into her eyes and he kissed her, and she kissed back, long, softly and wonderfully We’d better go into the house, or you will not be welcome here anymore. I’ll see you toward the evening at the Café. Reluctantly he turned, went into the house and said Good-bye to everyone.

Tomas memory, when he met Adrianne. She was about a 3 year old crying down this deep stone wall. He was 8 and walking toward the mountains, he became aware of a baby crying. He looked over and saw this little one that was desperate trying to climb the wall up, but falling down again.

Hey what are you during down there? The cry stop but she didn’t answer. I am going down to bring you up, would you like that Nowhere. He was with her by now, put the baby in his shoulder, and climb the wall. Can you tell me where your home is? She answered, Home. And Tomas going down the route heard a lot of noses with saddling horses, and barking dogs. Eladio recognize the doctor’s son: Grand mama was running to her baby. Adrianne! Grand mamma!

Eladio said to Tomas, hugging the young boy. You are welcome in this house any time

And from that moment on, knowing the mischievous little explored he had taking Adrianne to show her the mountains. Now, reaching her teens, they were best friends. At the cafe, they all congratulated Adrianne for being so well known through the magazines. Adrianne felt an uneasy feeling getting so much attention. Please! Stop! Tell me all about yourself.

This summer, I will teach you all a few dances to perform at the school. What about it? YES! they all screamed.

Adrianna’s training in dance helped her teach the other girls the steps and choreography which they performed at Lolly’s school. The tickets were all sold-out, and the nuns were very happy to have some extra money. They spent the days rehearsing and Blanca was their piano player.

The performances was a big success; the girls’ time and effort were all worth-it

It was a very hot and sticky night when Adrianne and Tomas reached the river and stopped at the place where the waterfall tumbled into a dark pool. Let us get into the water!! Tomas called out and fell in fully clothed. Adrianne followed him promptly, relieved to fall into the cool, refreshing water as that it closed around them.

It washed away the sweat, along with her heavy-lidded weariness. The others hesitated briefly, before they all jumped into the pond sending the water rushing over their heads in a wave. Only Lolly stayed safely on the bank. All of them ducked beneath the water, and they began to flail about. They splashed and they called to one another like children.

Tomas and Adrianne swam toward the tumble stones, as they wanted to feel the water on their upturned faces. Together, they stood beneath the rushing waterfall until it knocked them off their feet from under them. By now it was dark which made it difficult to see everyone’s faces but the moon was bright.

Adrianne and Tomas clench at each other and rose to the surface laughing and choking. Then they stopped dead still as their eyes with the sheen of the crystal sprayed between them. They leaned forward touching their lips together as Tomas drew Adrianne closer and his kiss deepened, became a command and a plead all at once. Adrianne shivered at the pressured of his lips on hers, his tongue in her mouth, with her own. She broke away just as Tomas did and they stood, unable to move or speak, frightened by the rise of their passion as they had not been. Now he said You are a true Goddess.

I don’t think the ancient Gods would be happy to hear you compare me to them.

But she was pleased by the compliment, jut the same. Why can’t I bear to look at you sometimes? She said touching his arm briefly. Because I am 5 year older than you, and at this age you are still a very young soon you. Will be thirteenth you will change a lot, remember I know a lot about medicine. Without letting her stop him, he continued, Because no matter how we shout fear anything, we’re afraid now, you and me, of the things inside us that we can’t understand. But you are going to marry me.

He said that with completed certainty. You and I belong to each-other, as we know as the sun will always rise he said, and gave her a smile of contentment.

Why would I marry you? as she teased him, a little angry that he should take her consent for granted:

Because it is! It meant to be! Come he said. Where are we going?" Adrianne asked.

Why? She wanted something from him, though she was not certain what it was.

You know why. We couldn’t live without each other anymore than we could breathe without air

Adrianne frowned. Is it enough? Of course it’s enough. I love you.

She turned to face him fully. Why didn’t you ever say that before?

Because you always knew that I love you, as you love me. Yes she whispered

Crossing the Atlantic Ocean she notice the sky was an intense dark blue promising that soon the Stars would begin to show. They were serving drinks before dinner and Adrianne ordered a Bloody Mary. She took sips of her drink and reflected on her past, the life she had left behind.

    Chapter 4

ADRIANNE STOPPED TO STARE IN wonder at the magnificent lake. She had just arrived from the North and her recent memories lived within her. Back in Madrid her life was so different. She wanted to enjoy the minutes before going to work at Yvette’s Alta Couture (El Parque del Retiro) which in her mind was the most beautiful park in all Europe.

The sun scattered though the trees with gleams of light. Scrutinizing through the leaves overhead she looked with interest at the clear blue sky. The breeze, the murmur of water flowed down from the fountains with their beautiful sculptures from themes of Mythology.

A lake in the centre of the park with little sail boats silently moved about. Flowers filled the air with their fragrances and the grass was splendid, green and thick.

She was happier than she had ever been. She felt an overwhelming sense of freedom.

Looking at the time, she had to leave her day dreaming. It would take her a few minutes to be at work.

At Calle Serrano, she flew up the narrow back stairway. Maria sighed. Adrianne, you seem to come from track and field. Are you always being chased?

She sat at the long-mirrored vanity chattering with the girls while she began applying makeup.

Lolita said, Why don’t you let Robert and I take you out for a coffee and show you what you’ve been missing? Adrianne made a negative face at the mirror. Well, I don’t see what your boring routine is going to do for you. I want to do exciting things. Maybe accomplish something worthwhile at the same time, said Adrianne.

You have already accomplished many things in your very young life Lolita said. Lolita and all the other girls were at least 5 years older. How many women, do you think there are in the world that fits the frame and looks to do the type of work that we do? Lolita said. She was the quintessential girl of the moment. I don’t mean physical beauty. I need something more worthwhile and exciting, she replied. All the more reason to come with Robert and I tonight. You know!! His younger brother has just arrived into town, a top matador and his father the greater bullfighter in history. Lolita joked that she was determined to marry Robert, since his family was old money, and very rich. It would mean going home late. My parents would never permit it. Tell them a lie, Lolita said.

By now Adrianne’s makeup and hair were ready. Two hours she stood frozen as the fitter pinned hemlines and tucked sleeves to the couturier’s exacting specifications. Adrianne stepped out onto the runway, in a blaze of color. Lights struck a magnificent, crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling’s salon and hundreds of smart people were reflected in the mirrored walls. Spotlights and flashes from the photographers’ cameras ricocheted from the glass dazzling her eyes.

She paraded though the room a dozen times that afternoon, and then the show ended. Once back in the dressing room. Lolita yelled.

Adrianne. Hurry up. Get over here! Please, be a good sport about this afternoon. I have to give Robert an answer. His brother is with him. He saw you on the runway, and he is enchanted by you, Adrianne was stunned. The words worked on her; she nodded yes. As they went to the front door she saw that Robert’s brother, called Juanito by his fans, and was in the lobby holding some beautiful flowers.

Senorita Vales he said raising her hand to his lips. I cannot think of a more promising omen than to spend the first day of my holiday buying you chocolates. She tried not to burst out laughing. The incredible invitation encouraged her. When would you like to buy these chocolates, Don Juan?

As soon as possible senorita Adrianne wondered if this was just a ploy. May I call you by your first name? he asked. Juanito had alert dark eyes and long thick lashes. He escorted Adrianne to a car surrounded by fans in the middle of the circular drive. The doorman chased the crowd away, and they drove off in the cream-colored Bugatti convertible.

To what do we owe the honor of the senorita stay in Madrid? I am going to school and my parents live here. The matador’s expression brightened. So you will be with us for a long while, long enough to see me in the ring?

He slowed down as they turned into La Grande Via. He brought the car to a halt on Calle Peligros in front of a shop with La Mahonesa scrawled above the door on shiny tiles and gallantly walked around to her side to lead her in to the store. The owner delighted to receive the famous bullfighter, bowed repeatedly and then began to compliment him on one of the fights of the past season. Juan interrupted to introduce Adrianne. Don Jose bowed from the waist several times.

Senorita, it is an honor to have you visits my shop. For one hundred and eighty years, my ancestors and I have made Spain’s best chocolates. We have served the royal family and the country’s most illustrious citizens. The senorita shall have a box just like the ones we used to prepare for Queen Victoria Eugenia. He produced a box lined with pink silk, and taking some tongs, he began to select from each group in the counter. Adrianne watched for few minutes, and then Juan took her arm and turned to leave, calling out to the busy merchant as we reached the door, Don Jose, we will be in the car. Shouldn’t we wait for the chocolates? Adrianne asked. Certainly not, he answered. A gentleman does not carry packages.

A few minutes later Don Jose appeared bearing silver try on which rested a box.
