H F Cantrell has a lifetime interest in nature which started during his teen years while working summers on his father's farm. There he learned about plants and disease control. This interest continued throughout college and graduate school where he focused on microbiology and biochemistry. This lead to a career in medical microbiology and further into biochemistry and metabolism study of microorganisms. He spent his final working years in the pharmaceutical industry studying the biochemistry of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Currently, he maintains his interest in nature by gardening flowering plants and watching birds.
