    This book is dedicated to

    Linda Walker

    who has created the wonderful

    illustrations for my books,

    and 6412.jpg

Linda is an award-winning wildlife artist

with a very busy schedule. She has

    graciously taken much time away

from other pursuits to add beautiful

form and color to the words of my poems.

    Thank you, Linda.

    I am most grateful.

    One morning as the sun

    came up

    over mountains cool

    and green

    a tiny chipmunk named

    Cheroot

    climbed from a hole,

    unseen.

    11.jpg

In search of berries, grain, or seed,

    Cheroot began his day.

He scurried down a woodland path

    passing friends along the way.

He saw a buck and doe

beside a pool of glacial waters.

They grazed on grass and leaves and such

    and sweetly scented aster.

A beaver swimming in the creek

carried wood to build a dam.

    A nanny scaled rocky peaks

    and stopped beside a ram.
