A Message from God - Dr. Nabil Khalil

    1

May Thy Will Be Done, O Lord

    (My experience with God)

Relying on God means that you are accepting and surrendering completely to God’s will and saying to Him, O Lord, lead my life, hold my hand and lead me as you wish.

This will rejoice the heart of God who said, Come to me all you who labor and I will relieve you and give you rest.

The complete submission to God’s will asserts that the believer depends entirely on God’s will and is commanded by Jesus Christ our Lord. When His disciples asked Him to teach them how to pray, He taught them the divine prayer which is Our Father who is in heaven, sanctified be thy name, may your kingdom come, may thy will be done, as in heavens also on earth.

Jesus Christ our Savior asks us when we pray to depend on God and accept His will, and to pray to God saying, May thy will be done, O Lord.

My Lord had taught me this blessing and this great commandment through a personal experience that I went through, and I learnt from it the blessing of relying on God and yielding to His will.

This experience dates back to more than twenty years ago, in 1994, when I was working at a US Army military base and I was in perfect health.

I started my working hours at 7:00 a.m. and I would finish usually at 10:00 p.m. daily. This long day includes an hour lunchbreak, and I got accustomed to the long working hours.

Until one morning I was heading to my work as usual, and after I got off my car at the base’s parking lot, I took my handbag to my office in this huge building where I was working.

I walked a few steps and suddenly I could not move my feet at all. I was unable to walk, so I stopped and I stood there in the parking lot, unable to move.

One of my colleagues passed and saw me standing and approached me to ask me why I was standing there and what was wrong with me. I told him that I could not move my feet, so he reached out to help me until I reached my office with great difficulty.

What happened to me raised my concerns a lot, so I went to see a doctor the next morning, and after running all the necessary examination, x-rays, and tests, he told me that he suspects a major problem in the back vertebrae and he recommended taking a neurologist’s opinion.

So I scheduled an appointment with a neurologist, and after running the checkup, he told me that my case requires fast surgical intervention and there is no drug treatment.

I turned to another neurologist, who was a professor at the university, and this doctor confirmed what the other doctor said—the need for surgery and set a date for surgery. A week later I checked into the hospital for the surgery, and it was a difficult surgery. However, I was confident and reassured that I would pass the operation successfully because the surgeon who would operate was a famous and well-known surgeon.

Unfortunately, I came out of the operation in a state of complete paralysis of all sides, my two hands, and feet. I found myself unable to walk completely. Even to the bathroom, I could not enter without the help of others. And my hands were paralyzed so I was unable to write my own name or eat. It was a very difficult situation.

After three days and at doctor’s orders, I was discharged from hospital and went home to spend the Christmas, which was very near, and I was hopeful that my condition would get better. However, my condition got worse and I was completely paralyzed.

I called the surgeon to consult him and he said, You only have to be hospitalized again and have another surgery and your condition may improve.

I asked him, Is the result of this process guaranteed?

And he answered, I am sorry to say, no, your condition will worsen and you might die through this surgery.

I asked him, What is your opinion?

And he answered, The decision is yours. Think about it and give me an answer.

I went through a very difficult time. I prayed a lot, and my family and many churches raised their prayers to God to heal me.

Until one night, Christ appeared to me and He said to me, When you pray tomorrow, raise your prayers for healing and say ‘O Lord, let thy will be done.’

Next morning, my wife came to help me have my breakfast, and I told her that Christ appeared to me and asked me to pray for him and say, Let thy will be done, O Lord and I will raise this prayer with you. So I prayed for healing from God, and this time I said, Let thy will be done, O Lord, not as I want it but as you want.

Then I contacted the surgeon and told him that I will have the surgery, and I checked into the hospital and underwent a very difficult surgery.

So what happened after I presented God’s will? After a six-hour surgery in which I lost a great amount of blood, I was taken to the intensive care unit where I spent the night in deep sleep, under the influence of anesthesia during the procedure.

I remember waking up early the next morning. I opened my eyes and looked around me and a nurse hurried to me, saying, Welcome back. Thank God you are okay. Anything I can do for you?

I looked at her and said no with my eyes only, and she said, Now I will bring you your breakfast.

When the nurse brought the food to me, I asked her to eat breakfast while I was sitting on the chair next to my bed. She laughed and told me, No, today you will eat in bed because you are unable to get off your bed.

I said, No, I am able to get out of bed and have my breakfast while sitting on the chair next to my bed.

The nurse repeated what she said, I am sorry. The doctor said that you eat special food and you are not allowed to get off your bed for any reason.

During this discussion between me and the young nurse, the surgeon, who performed the operation the day before, came in, and the nurse hurried to him asking for his opinion.

The doctor came to me with two other doctors and said, Welcome back, and how are you doing today?

I said, I am fine, thank you.

He said, Thank God you are okay. The nurse complained that you are not following orders and you want to get out of your bed, and I said that this is too risky.

I answered the surgeon, I feel that I can get out of bed and have my breakfast sitting on the chair.

The surgeon was amazed at what I said and said, I want to see how you will do this.

I felt strong and powerful, so I moved my head and sat up straight in bed and started to move my feet to get off the bed. The doctor moved quickly to support me, and then pointed to the doctors who were with him and they all surrounded me as I was trying to get off my bed.

I was able to drop my feet from the bed and move with slow and heavy steps toward the chair next to my bed and I succeeded to sit. I then looked at the face of the surgeon and saw how amazed he was, and he said in a low voice, This is impossible. Then he put his hand on my shoulder and said, What happened today is a miracle that I did not expect.

I answered him in a low voice, I depended on God, and He made this miracle happen through you.

He answered me, Yes, this is indeed a miracle. It did not happen throughout my career as a doctor for more than thirty years. And then he said again, Welcome back and thank God you are okay.

Then he signaled to the nurse to allow me to have breakfast on the chair as I requested. I ate my breakfast seated on the chair, and I felt a power running in my feet and all my body.

God made the miracle happen, as He promised me that night when I was sick, confused, and paralyzed, and when He told me, When you pray, pray to God for healing and say ‘O Lord, let your will be done.’

On this day, my Lord taught me that trusting God and accepting His will carry blessings and miracles.

I learned the lesson and I gave God a covenant and promise between Him and me from this day until the last day of my life; that all my prayers and requests from you will bear the title of Your will as You have taught us to pray O Lord, in God’s prayer: Thy will be done, as in heaven as well as on the ground.

It is the blessing of depending on God.
