Introduction
Epiphany, in this story about Rachael is a comprehension; a perception of reality by a sudden intuitive realization; a revelatory manifestation of the essence and meaning of her fear. [A wide awakening] This fear that Rachael experienced has exhibited itself in many ways. Fear gave Rachael a feeling of agitation and anxiety caused by pressure and imminent danger. Fear, fright, dread, terror and panic were all present. Know that dread is strong fear, especially if what one is powerless to avoid, which in this story Rachael experienced.
Creative insights, whether they be insights that flash a marvelous metaphor into our heads, insights that enable us to put together a story or a novel, or insights that produce scientific discoveries. All these insights arise somehow from our subconscious. This began early on in the life of Rachael.
Depression does not discriminate in choosing its victims. Wealth and fame is no safeguard against it.
When a writer complains of writer’s block,
they are saying something is interfering with whatever it is that liberates our insights from our subconscious. What does any creative person have to feel other than the right to their own feelings? You tell yourself this is a story, this is an essay, this is a novel, or this is a musical composition. In this book about Rachael I am saying. This is what I want to say to explain the tremendous hurt and pain that occurred in the life of Rachael.
Dedication
I dedicate this book for the secret pain in the lives of Christians and people who have experienced depression, fear or loneliness, and have walked a weary plank of despondency.
To those who have found themselves at some point in their lives wanting to hide their fears, wanting to maintain and hold on to the pillars in there lives that will keep them focused, yet somehow they feel trapped and isolated.
Quite often we hear, If you were really a Christian, you wouldn’t struggle with negative emotions.
It isn’t because your faith in God is lacking and it probably isn’t because of sin in your life, and you aren’t the only Christian facing this monster. The truth is. life happens.
Many Christians get depressed, and Christians do struggle with life’s pain and hurts. Have you ever plastered on a fake smile when you didn’t feel the least bit cheerful or said you were fine when you felt like you were sinking inside, I’m sure you have, so May you ascend to the place where you truly belong, and once there, may you connect to your true place and reunite with the authenticity that is you.
To those that love the Lord and serve him completely, yet tragedy has struck and you’ve learned the unyielding nature of pain. I dedicate this book to you.
Acknowledgments
I have to begin as always with thanking God for his bountiful blessing of giving me the talent and gift to write, and for using me as a tool in the mission to make this book present awareness of life’s experiences and how sometimes these experiences can suppress your spirit.
I thank God for helping me day by day to realize my dream to get this book published. I also thank him for the ideas, the favor and the faith to continue pressing into the destiny he has planned for me. I acknowledge God for leading and helping me with all the legal information and background studies needed to finish this book.
I’m grateful to the many people who’ve generously supported my writings. In addition, I offer my deep appreciation to my family for being in my corner. Also I offer thanks to the many remarkable women that have shared their life stories with me to help complete this book. This makes the endless work hours all worthwhile.
To my friends, and neighbors, I thank you for your support and most of all, for just allowing me to be Beulah
when I’m chilling, hanging out enjoying myself.
To my grandchildren and great grandchildren who are growing up slowly but surely, and while I love them dearly, I’m proud of every one of them. To all the relatives that have not entered this world at the present time I love you because we are family, and no matter what, we still love each other. Don’t ever forget the bond and love we have because you are part of a grand family. You may not get to know me face to face, but through my writings you will. I pray that all of you will understand the legacy I have tried to leave you. Stick to your goals, pursue your vision, don’t give up, always remember, it takes studying, time, money and persistence.
Quick fixes do not work.
So have patience my dear family and continue to strive and keep your eye on your vision. If you do this you will be proud of your own accomplishments. You can do it. I’m eighty four years old writing this book and I am very proud of my accomplishments.
Chapter One
Colorado Springs 1965. Rachael finally landed a position as a mortgage representative for a large mortgage company. She was happy and doing fine. Eventually she became acquainted with several ladies that worked in her department. Elizabeth, Patricia and Rachael soon became close and began going out to lunch together and later, to shows in the downtown area.
Elizabeth e-mailed Rachael to invite her to go along with her to a family celebration. It was a family member’s birthday. Rachael e-mailed back, Thank you for the invite but I was planning on doing something around the house to help my sister on that day.
Time eventually pursued the opportunity of Rachael’s friend seeking her out to go with them to a church concert. Elizabeth belonged to Morning Star Baptist Church
The choir was celebrating their tenth anniversary. Come on Rachael, say you’ll come. It’s for a good cause. You don’t have to buy a ticket they are having a free will offering.
Okay Liz I’ll come. "Good, I’ll pick you up Friday night about seven o’clock.
Hey Cynthia, are you going to the mall anytime this weekend?
Yes, I need to pick up some pantyhose. I wore my last pair today and put a snag in them. Of course you know I can’t just buy pantyhose.
Why? You need something else?
Yes, one of my friends at the job asked me to go to their choir’s anniversary Friday night; they’re celebrating ten years of service. Elizabeth said they have invited several different singing groups and a soloist. It sounds like they’re preparing a quality program, what church does she attend? She’s a member of
Morning Star Baptist Church Oh yes! I hear they have a dynamite preacher over there. I’ve been meaning to visit them but I stay so busy at my own church I haven’t had time.
Maybe we can go one Sunday soon Cynthia."
Friday night, Elizabeth was there at quarter to seven. Ding Dong, the doorbell was ringing. Mommy someone is at the front door
I’m coming Jenny. Aunt Rachael is expecting someone. Opening the door she greeted Elizabeth, Hello, I’m Cynthia, Rachael’s sister
Hello, I’m Elizabeth I work with Rachael. I’m here to pick her up.
Yes she is expecting you.
Come in she’ll be right down in a few. Rachael tells me you are a member of Morning Star Baptist Church over there on Calvert Drive.
Yes I love it there.
I’ve heard about the great work Pastor Erick Martin is doing over there. I’ve been meaning to go over there but you know when you’re busy working in your own church it’s hard to find time to visit. How well do I know: sometimes I’m at the church three and four times a week for one committee or another. Mrs. Cynthia, why don’t you come along with us tonight? Thanks for asking, but I’m studying for my Sunday school class tonight. I teach on Sunday’s but maybe another time. Mrs. Cynthia, where is your church? Oh, I am a member of
True word Church of Christ on Hemmingway Drive; Reverend Lewis Prod is my Pastor. Yes I’ve heard of it. They tell me he can walk the wall too. I need to visit your church also. Well maybe one day something will come up that you will have time to get away.
Hey Liz I see you’ve met my sister.
Yes and enjoying the conversation.
Listen you two enjoy yourselves and when the dancing starts, cut a step for me." They all laughed.
Rachael, I came a little early because I wanted to get a good parking space. Good Lord!
Look at these cars, and I thought we were early. Yea, girl, these folks are on time tonight.
The choir marched in wearing new robes for their tenth anniversary. They were a soft light color of lavender with gold insets on the sleeves. A gold cross in front with the letters MSBC engraved on the gold tone cross in a darker shade of lavender. A one inch gold band fitted around the neck in a clergy collar style as well as the fitted cuffs that were also gold. Liz, look at these robes girl; they are strutting tonight and looking good too. Everyone was in step and started out on the same foot. The choir came in marching and singing to the song
Let’s get back to Eden and live on top of the world. They were stepping and swaying to the music. When the master of ceremonies started talking about when we think of the goodness of Jesus and all he has done for us, just think about it, and church, it was that same Jesus that walked in Galilee, the same Jesus that taught beside the sea, the same Jesus by faith we have been told, it was that same Jesus that saved our soul. Aren’t you glad about it tonight church? The Hammond organ sound like it started saying
Tell me what you think about Jesus? Refrain.
He’s alright What do you think about Jesus?
He’s alright
He’s the lily of the valley
He’s alright
He’s the bright and morning star now
He’s alright
Oh, Oh. Oh, he’s alright he’s alright now
He’s alright. etc. The master of ceremony started singing the words along with the organ and before anyone new it the church went into a praise dance to God, Liz and Rachael’s feet hit the floor in the dance praise at the same time. It was on in that building with a high praise. To calm the people back down, the master of ceremonies started singing,
Let the church say Amen, let the church say Amen, God has spoken so let the church say Amen."
When Elizabeth dropped Rachael off back at the house Cynthia was still up doodling around in the kitchen. Hey Cinth what are you still doing up? I was just taking advantage of a quiet house for a change. I’m having a little snack. And a cup of tea, you want a cup? Yeah, that will be nice. What are you eating?
A few slices of turkey breast, with mayo and some crackers. I’ll slice myself a little turkey too. How was the service Rachael? Child! You should’ve been there. That choir can sing and I’ll tell you what, you can tell they have been well trained. The visiting groups were good too. Did you and Ms. Liz cut a step for me? They both chuckled. Rachael didn’t tell how she and Liz hit the floor with a dance in their step at the same time. Cynthia, the music and atmosphere in the service, was in high gear.
Well I’m glad you enjoyed yourself Rach.
The next day at work Liz e-mailed Rachael. Thank you for going with me to the choir anniversary celebration. Hope you enjoyed yourself.
Thank you for asking.
I had a great time."
The next month the girls all went out for lunch together. Rachael had found her place among the employees at the company and was feeling confident. Patricia organized the lunch date and told Liz and Rachael where they were going. The lunch date was in the building across the street on the twelfth floor, they knew the restaurant was there, but they never tried the food because of the short time they had for lunch. Patricia, who do you think has this kind of money? Yeah Pat
you two need to hush, let’s roll with the big bucks today for a change. We work hard; and deserve to treat ourselves once in awhile. When
