About this ebook

I have always been interested in writing but never had the time. With life moving on at warp speed, you don’t think about writing. Now that I’m retired, I have more time to think and put my thoughts on paper. I hope you enjoy my first attempt to tell a story to the public. I hope to write more in the near future. Sit back and take a few minutes to go back in time to your great-grandparents life, when things were a lot less complicated. I hope this puts a smile on your face.

In 1886, life was hard for the farmers in Idaho. Most families lived on what they grew and what they could trade for. Some settlers would die from starvation their first winter, that would be a hard lesson for those that survived ; to always be prepared for the hard times, and hard work from daylight to dark was the best way to be prepared. My grandfather, William Smith, was a young man at the time, and was no stranger to hard work and having to do without. Being a farmer, there was little time for anything that didn’t put food in their mouths or feed their livestock. At night when Will went to sleep he would dream of adventures; exploring the wild-west, and, discovering gold, which he thought would end their relentless hardships.

In the spring of 86, their lives would be changed. Whether it was luck or Divine guidance who knows, but I will try to tell you about that spring (in my Grandfathers own words).

It was early in March, still weeks before the fields would be ready to plant. The ground was still frozen in places, and the rest was mud. Will decided to ask his folks again to let him go exploring, every year he’s told next year maybe son, now Will was a full grown man of seventeen and with a little persuading, they agreed to let him go as long as his best friend Josh would go along, and they were back by planting time.

The two young men loaded their backpacks with supplies early the next morning, Will told his Mom once more not to worry then they told their families goodbye, and set off on a grand adventure, one that both young men had only dreamed of.

They packed only enough food for a couple weeks, mostly dried- meat, some canned vegetables, and some coffee. The rest would have to come from Mother Nature; they would hunt and fish to survive, if need be. They were both just seventeen, so this would be a coming-of-age adventure, you might say.

When they were almost out of sight of Will’s house, he turned to see his mom, still watching them, as they disappeared from her sight.

It was a beautiful morning. The sun was shining, and the smell of fresh wildflowers was in the air. The trees were just beginning to bloom and all the birds were singing their happy familiar tunes.

After walking steady for a few hours, they decided to rest and eat lunch. Leftovers from Mom’s breakfast made a great lunch, and it felt good to get the heavy packs off their backs for a few minutes.

The young men now rested couldn’t help but notice as they walked along, "There sure is a lot of rabbits in
