On 4 March, 1973 Maurice and Maralyn Bailey were on course for the Galapagos Islands when their yacht, Auralyn, was struck and holed by a whale. There was scarcely time to grab essential supplies and abandon her for the liferaft and dinghy before she sank. Initially the Baileys believed that a rescue would come soon

At the changeover of the watch at midnight, another ship passed. The sea had not gone down and a considerable swell was running. With great difficulty Maurice hauled the dinghy close to the raft and choosing his moment carefully, flopped into the dinghy.
