PREFACE
I was on a golf trip to Yorkshire last year; we were a group of eight. After golf, dinner, and several drinks, the conversation would inevitably turn to the old times. The rest of the group were younger, so I amused them with anecdotes of my time in the South of France as a naive twenty-year-old. I decided to put pen to paper and titled it Clueless in Cannes because, quite simply, I was.
CHAPTER 1
The Journey Begins
Well, this is it. I was standing on the platform at Cannes railways station in the South of France with my leather suitcase. It was a very hot day, and the case got heavier and heavier. We didn’t have wheelie cases in those days. In fact, there were a lot of things we didn’t have then. It was 1963.
