Lakes and Dreams: A Play Mirroring the World in the Eyes of a Father, Mother, and Son.
()
About this ebook
Lakes And Dreams—or LAD, my acronym for it—is my first full-scale stage play. It can be adapted for television and for live theatre as well as for the big screen.
Props and costumes are optional for each director and stage designer, no matter the religion practiced and no matter what the environment, even though it is based on the Christian doctrine of the Divinity and the Trinity.
There are three characters in the play—a father, a mother, and their son. All other characters exist only in the imagination of the principal characters, the audience, according to the idiosyncrasies of the imaginative director as he may see fit to interpret.

I did not intend for LAD to take place on a specific island; it is for every island. Therefore, it is universal.

ACT 1
GOD IS MERCIFUL AND WILL FORGIVE YET
A woman in her mid-fifties suddenly sits up and looks the young man sitting across from her. Her hands are folded across her broad chest. She wears a flowing gown on which she is tying a wrapper. The young man looks in her eyes as though wondering what she is intent on telling him. He has a pen in his right hand. A notebook is open in front of him, and he looks at it now and again. The two people have nearly the same chocolate-colour complexion.
The lighting is natural; sunlight filters through two of the room’s four windows. The curtains dance in the air emitted by the split-unit air conditioners in the apartment.
Each person says and does what he or she says and does in the most natural way—exactly the way most sons and mothers act in their everyday lives.
The woman begins to speak, looking as if what she says surprises even herself.
MOM Now, son, why have you suddenly decided to engage me in this kind of spirited conversation—I mean the kind of questions you have been asking me every day? Not just every day, but each and every time you have found time to engage me in discussion during the past I don’t even know how many days? Or has it run into weeks? Son, what has suddenly come over you. What has made you to do what you have been doing all of a sudden?
(The young man shakes his head throughout the woman’s speech. He closes the book spread open in front of him and begins to speak, his eyes closed most of the time.)
SON Mom, you are right to ask me what you have just asked me. I am exceedingly happy that you are asking me now, almost three weeks into the wonderful conversation you have held with me without holding anything back. If you had asked me this on the first day, maybe I would have backed off in fear that you were not ready to talk to me about the things I asked you initially. And the things that I have come to know now would have been lost or remained in the dark to me. It is for the same reason, dear Mom, that I appeal to you to please keep talking to me about the things I have asked you about so that none of us should forget our questions or the storylines we are following. What you tell me means a whole lot more to me than my stupidity in not asking you about these things—I mean since I grew up to be the man I am today.
(The woman leans forward suddenly, placing her hands on the table, looking horrified.)
MOM Ah, son, how can you describe yourself in that kind of uncomplimentary language and manner? You, stupid? Foolish? You, who I, your lucky and very proud mother,
