Chester Thompson
Chester Thompson was born on January 18th, 1945 at Amarillo, Texas on poultry ranch owned by his grandfather and father. His parents were told that he would die before he reached age two, but by age two he was very much alive. When he was two his grandmother died and his parents left Amarillo to move to Philadelphia to be near his mother’s family. However when he was in the third grade the family doctor told hismother that she and his younger brother Tom, needed to move to a dryer climate. So the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Chester entered the fourth grade when school started and attended school in Phoenix until he graduated from high school. He began his writing career doing reports on animals during his fifth grade and sixth grade school years. He was turned onto mystery books at the Maricopa county library branch in his Phoenix neighborhood while in the sixth grade. Being an avid reader he read many books on several topics. Detective and mystery books were among them. Books like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and Franklin W. Dixon’s ‘The Hardy Boys’ to name a few. Today at nearly 74 Chester enjoys writing on various topics but especially detective mystery. Mr. Fenton and ‘The Halloween Moon Case’ is just such a book.

Mom
moaned Margie, running her hands over her skirt.
I’ll just die if I don’t have a horse of my own.
Mrs. Weston looked up from the tomato plants she was transplanting into her vegetable garden.
Margie
, she said, attempting to look stern. If you died every time you said that you’d need to have at least as many lives as our cat, in order to live for one day.
I don’t care,
she said with tears in her eyes.
Margie scooped up a large green praying mantis and watched it for a minute, then she gently put it on a tomato plant.
With Max and Danny at camp this summer, I’ll die of boredom. I mean it mom!
Mrs. Weston sighed.
That would make you dying twice today so far!
Then she stood up, sweating in the hot May sun.
Now listen, Margie, once and for all if you want a horse like the one in the horse show yesterday, the answer is to earn some money. You know the only reason your brothers were able to go to that camp is because they earned the money themselves.
The saguaro ranch, Margie thought to herself was really a great place to live, and she always had fun there, but she wished that another girl lived somewhere close by. There were no other homes nearby except the old Tanner mansion on the eastern side of the Weston property, where odd old recluse Mr. Tanner lived alone. The two ranches faced a dirt and gravel road miles from the town of Cactus Flats. Margie’s father managed the local feed store in Cactus Flats and Margie and her brothers attended the town school. She had a lot of friends in Cactus Flats, but unless school was in session she rarely saw any of them. Now that her brothers, Max and Danny, had gone to camp, there was nobody but her little brother, Buddy to play with. She impatiently kicked a stone down the dusty path from the vegetable garden.
It’s not fair. You know you wouldn’t let me try for a job as a waitress or anything. Maybe I could have gone, too.
You’re only thirteen,
her mother said.
Perhaps next year we might consider having you go to camp also. Your father and I are very sorry,
she added, This year we just couldn’t afford to send you to camp.
Margie began to feel ashamed of herself, and so she threw her arms around her mother. I’m sorry mom, that I’m a pest. I won’t nag at you anymore I promise.
Why don’t you begin earning some money for your horse right now,
said Mrs. Weston. There’s plenty to do around here with your brothers away. I’ll pay you something every week if you help me with Buddy and the housework. Your Dad would be glad to increase your allowance if you do some weeding in the garden every day and feed the chickens and gather the eggs.
Oh Momma!
Margie hugged her mother even tighter. Maybe I could earn twenty dollars a week. Do you think I might?
Mrs. Weston nodded and smiled. You might,
she said. At any rate, if you really work, I think you could have a horse by next summer.
Then they shaded their eyes with one hand and looked toward the truck that was coming into the driveway.
Isn’t that daddy driving up to the house? Why is he home from the feed store before lunch,
asked Margie. With that Margie darted through the gate and ran up the path from the vegetable garden, calling back to her mother, I’ll talk to him right now and maybe I can start earning the money for my horse right away.
At the top of the driveway, Mr. Weston backed and turned the pickup around. Margie ran along next to the truck shouting, Dad! Mom said I could earn some money for a horse if I help with the garden, the chickens and Buddy. Can I? Please Dad can I?
Mr. Weston left the motor running and
