Polish-born illustrator Janina Domanska, who was awarded a Caldecott Honor in 1971 for her If All the Seas Were One Sea, turns her attention to the traditional English Christmas carol, The First Noel, in this holiday picture-book. Each two-page spread features either a verse of the carol or its refrain along the bottom of the page, and full-color artwork depicting the Christmas story above. A musical arrangement of the carol, done by John Krumich, is included at the rear.Although I have enjoyed many of Domansk'a folkloric retellings, from King Krakus and the Dragon to The Best of the Bargain, as well as the illustrations she contributed to Eric P. Kelly's Newbery Medal-winning novel, The Trumpeter of Krakow, I found that my reaction to The First Noel was at best lukewarm. The artwork, created using watercolor paints, colored dyes and black ink, was not always to my taste here. Her palette is vivid, and I liked her patterned backgrounds and stylized heavenly figures, from stars to angels, but her human characters were far less appealing. Her shepherds wore garish cloaks and odd-looking hate (one reminded me of an old-fashioned bathing cap), and had faces that looked a little "scribbly." I liked her elongated Three Magic better, but her Holy Family also didn't appeal. There's nothing to argue with in the text, of course (unless one dislikes the carol), but I was disappointed to see that Domanska used the five-verse version, as I grew up singing the six-verse one. I haven't come across many picture-books based on The First Noel, so if the reader is interested, it might still be worth seeking this one out, but I don't really recommend it that highly.

T he little redhead hurried down the golden street toward her meeting with Gabriel. Gabriel would be the one that was sent to Mary to announce the birth of the Messiah. He was the Father’s angel of revelation and his name was one of the only two mentioned in the scriptures. As she walked along she wondered what God’s main messenger angel wanted to see her about. Was God upset with her? She was a little scared as she recalled what happened to Lucifer the anointed cherub of God. She remembered how Lucifer tried to usurp the authority of the creator and how he said, ‘I will be like the most high’.

This self generated pride caused him and his followers to be cast out of God’s presence by Michael the archangel. She couldn’t think of any reason the Father might have to be upset with her. So why was she summoned to meet with Gabriel? The little red haired angel was the youngest of all the angels because she was the last one created. Angels are spirit beings and most often appeared in human form on earth as young men.

But the redhead’s human form was that of a twelve year old girl. As she entered into the presence of Gabriel, she noticed that God’s messenger wasn’t frowning in fact he had a big smile on his face. That fact put her worry about being in trouble to rest right away. She stood silent before the archangel waiting for Gabriel to speak first. This is what all of the angels of lower rank did out of respect for his rank. It was only a few short minutes although to her it seemed more like an hour before he spoke.

Father sent me to instruct you about a job that He has decided to give you upon the earth, announced Gabriel.

But why me and not an older, wiser angel with more experience, she asked?

When I asked God that same question He said, ‘because the name I gave her when I created her was given to her for this very job.

But my name means Christmas, she said.

I believe you will understand better after I explain your assignment to you, said the archangel.

Okay brother but I can’t see what a child of twelve could possibly do to help His earthly creations, said a confused girl.

"You may not see or understand what an inexperienced angel can do but the Father does.

Remember only He is all knowing and He sees far into the future while angels like us can’t know everything or see beyond the moment without Him, said Gabriel.

The pretty little twelve years old said, I am sorry to question His orders. But Gabriel just Smiled
