About this ebook

In the Heart of the Mountains explores the changing of the seasons in the western part of North Carolina. While the author, R. A. Pace, lived in and around the Blue Ridge Parkway, she went on routine hikes into the wilderness of western North Carolina and crafted audacious poetry that breaks from convention while staying with the traditional subject matter of Robert Frost and the like. In the Heart of the Mountains is to be appreciated and enjoyed for its affection for our natural world.

In the Heart of the Mountains - R.A. Pace

    SUMMER

    I

    Me dangling-dee in a tree

    That barks at high command

    I tense my fetches

    With silly wretches

    And I cried the dangly-dee

    II

Wilting forests render no hope forlorn

As I walked the trellises engaging mine

Eyes which saw the world fall into a sleep

Those though projected a great turmoil now

With no evidence of ever living

And no chance of succumbing to the woods

It was told to us from generations

That not keeping things close would undermine

The fragrance of reality too late

And I wanted to change the end too good

And the beginning returned to fight now

    For victories involving fatless greed

Now the creeps of snails and slime forever

Echo in the forest for creatures too

Creatures that lay bottomless in heaven

    III

The woods come to life only to fade too

As both we and them quarrel under too

To bring a listless love encountering to

Bound not my highest embracing toward

An enlightened bowel of some place to

Go forward in skies blue with gold
