CHAPTER 1
The Mist in the Woods
G randma Gigi’s house is a very special place to stay at or to visit. Her house was built a very long time ago, on land our family had owned for many years. It first belonged to my great-great-great-grandfather Patrick and his sister Kathleen. They came from Ireland to America after their father died. I have heard stories about them my whole life, as well as about the mist in the woods. I have even seen it—that is, the mist in the woods.
Everyone who visits or stays at Gigi’s house sees the mist. It seems to rise from the ground and covers the entire woods. When the mist comes to the woods, you can’t see any trees. Maybe I had better start by telling you about a few special days at Gigi’s house.
I always loved visiting Grandma Gigi. What fun I had spending time with her and playing with my brother and sometimes my cousins. I cannot explain what it was then or what it is like now. Maybe it was being with Gigi, or maybe it was magic. All I know is that it was wonderful.
I remember climbing trees, running around, swinging on the tire swing, and having so much fun. When the weather was nice, we picnicked at our family’s special spot. Everyone always helped to pack the large picnic basket. Gigi made sure we
