    INTRODUCTION

W HEN I WAS bitten by a spider a few years ago, I was so mad! I couldn’t believe I had to go to work with a big knot on my head! It was painful. I had to go to the doctor to get antibiotics because the spider that bit me was poisonous. I remember being upset, but soon after, fear set in. I checked under my sheets and covered my head with my hand when I walked into the garage to dump my trash all because I had gotten bitten and I didn’t know how to fix the situation. I started retracing my steps in an effort to figure out where in the house the spider bit me! I could not afford to be bitten again.

Being bit by that spider is a true story, but it is also a metaphor describing my own life. I grew up in Washington, D.C. during the crack cocaine era in the 1980s. My family was poor, and as the oldest of seven children, I witnessed a lot of crime. I was even told by a member of my family that I would only end up barefoot, pregnant, and on food stamps. I felt hopeless and helpless – the same way I felt when that spider bit me! Again, fear set in. I was afraid I was going to die and be trapped by my circumstances forever. Just like I reacted when I was bitten by the spider, I did not know how to fix my situation. I covered my eyes and ears and began to cave into my fears. I became depressed and suffered from loneliness even though I had people around me all the time. As life went on, I learned some tools that helped me overcome my feelings of helplessness, pain, and fear. They ensured my success because I made a life-altering decision to pursue true happiness, joy, and peace. Happiness, joy, peace, and freedom are tools to a successful life. I call these tools The Principles of Self-Excellence. The reality is that these principles were not learned overnight. It took years for me to learn these concepts. I have undergone some mental, spiritual, and emotional struggles. Living a successful life comes at a cost, but contrary to living an unfulfilled life, success certainly did not bite (like that spider). I failed many times, but success was not poisonous (like my bite). It was a process that left me at a place I never thought I would be.

With that said, I want to share what I learned with you. I want this book to be a self study tool for you. You have to make a decision to live by these principles. Commit to completing the self-excellence exercises in throughout each chapter and watch how success manifests in your life.

Here are the goals of each chapter:

Envision – Use visioning to set the course for positive change in your life.

X-Factor – Challenge yourself to discover you!

Change – To help you manage hard times in life.

Expectations – Pushing you to be aware that life can be as grand as you expect.

Living Lovely by Learning – Studying the art of learning so that you can grow.

Life Leadership – Guiding you through how to be the CEO of your life.

Engage – Enlightening your awareness moment by moment to increase life satisfaction.

Note the Naysayers – Teaching you to take note of haters and leverage their presence in your life.

Creativity – Awakening your creative side so that you can maximize your success.

Excellence- Charging you with living life the way you were born to and doing it using the Principles of Self-Excellence. Knowing that success won’t bite, but it will bless.

Words of Wisdom about Try Success, It Won’t Bite.

Get ready for your life to change and course correct. In this book, you will learn a lot about yourself and how you can leverage others in your life to be successful. Do not become weary in well-doing. Success will not bite! This book is not meant to be read in one day and then thrown on a bookshelf. Use this book as a living resource that you can return to at any time. I suggest you re-read chapters and do all of the work, answering each question throughout the book. If you can commit to the process of self-excellence in this book, then you can apply it to areas in your life. Bringing others in is a great way to stay accountable and encouraged about your life work. Read this book with a buddy, book club, or family. This way, this will not be just another self-help book, but a tool you can use to enhance your life and live your highest life. Are you ready? Let’s do the life work!

    CHAPTER 1

    E is for Envision

C AN YOU SEE it? Can you see yourself doing something that will fulfill your inner being and catapult you into what you were born to do? If you are having a hard time developing a vision, this chapter will show you how to develop it. If you can see it, then you are not far from achieving it. People underrate the power of vision. Let me demonstrate what I mean: Imagine that you are on a mountain with green grass and one flower. The flower is pink and it has a bumble bee buzzing around it. Can you see it? For you, it may be a relaxing, beautiful sight. Unfortunately, you are likely to forget about the mountain,
