    Black Magic - Elizabeth Detty

    CHAPTER 1

    Bluu

M Y JOB WAS never easy, it always kept me on my toes. Dealing with the Super-naturals of the world was a big job and I was glad I had a good team working with me. But today wasn’t that kind of day, I was working with what should be my receptionist instead of my usual hot headed Demon friend. Speaking of which I could hear Loki shifting uncomfortably from where I was crouched down behind a giant oak wood tree, the branches twisted and gnarled from old age, the leaves still falling from various parts of the tree. I’d been here so long my legs were cramping and my back muscles were tight, sweat was starting to soak my hair and roll down my face, I was trained to do this and yet it still made me ache and sweat like a rookie. My partner and best friend would probably be laughing his ass off at my current state, my heart almost stopped when the thought crossed my mind, I brushed it off. I didn’t have time to get emotional right now, I had to focus, especially for him. I could hear Loki, one of other my good friends talking to her, the Witch we were supposed to capture or execute whichever way it happened. While we were supposed to capture her I was here for another reason, she had information, valuable information at that or rather it was valuable to me. While she held information she was practicing dark magic which put her on the list, the Execution List, it wasn’t a very long one but it did have quite a few people on it. Some of the people on the list I didn’t even believe existed. Unfortunately I was one of the few people in charge of taking care of that list which made my life busier than I liked.

Loki was fidgeting with the hem of his white shirt with one hand, he was nervous like always, he wasn’t into this kind of work like I was, he didn’t even look the part actually. His black hair pulled back neatly at the nape, blue jeans and white shirt both neatly pressed and well fitting, white shoes on his feet, he looked like a cut out of a magazine. He was definitely a nerd even for being the leader of one the nearby Covens. I rolled my eyes, if he was so nervous why did he agree to this? He was usually just the receptionist at the house, just there to answer calls and file paper work so he wasn’t much of fighter although I knew for a fact he could. But to be honest I wish Loki would just do the signal already, I was dying over here and I was sure he was doing it on purpose at this point. They had been talking about nonsense, nothing important or interesting at all, at least not that I could hear or tell, although the thought did cross my mind that he would try to warn her because of Witches Code but I hope given that he was on our side of the fight that he wouldn’t but then again I could never be to sure especially now a days.

The reason I had even agreed to take on this mission was because this woman knew where my partner was, or at least she knew where he was at some point. The stupid man had went off on his own and was now missing, I was sure he had been taken by some group of thugs whilst being careless, he didn’t have a single careful bone in his body and we all knew it. But on another note, we had an order to take this witch down for a long time, way before I knew she had information we would need, I had just been too busy to do so.

She had been kidnapping and eating children, fattening them up and baking them to use them for her magic spells and rituals. It was sick and I was happy to finally be taking her out although before now it hadn’t really been at the top of my priorities as sad as that was. Not to mention she was breaking the Magic rules, doing blood magic as I had mentioned before, she was the worst kind of witch there was and that was also another reason Loki was here, he was supposed to be I guess what would be considered the Witches mediator or something.

I took a slow breath, fingers itching to pull the trigger on my gun already, the thrill of the kill was always my favorite part, sometimes they begged and made it even sweeter, that was fun to, the louder they screamed the more I got from it. There were other ways for Sirens like me to get our fill, we don’t always have to kill, for me the best part was always the chase. Loki was suddenly screaming which drew me from my thoughts, not the good kind of scream either to clarify, he was being pulled inside of the house, he wasn’t much of a fighter, he was more into defense and deception which is why he made a great decoy, but apparently right now he was even bad at that! I sighed heavily and then sprung from behind the tree, catching only a glimpse of the Witch.

She was by far the ugliest thing I had ever had the horror of laying my eyes upon. Absolutely terrifying honestly, her skin looked liked it was made from old wrinkled wax paper the kind you just kind of balled up and threw in the trash after using, not even like the good kind of wax paper either it looked like the cheap thin yellow one, her eyes made from scratched and broken peppermints, her lips old decaying black licorice, her bony hands were wrapped tightly around Loki, her long blood red finger nails digging into his skin. Her dress was in tatters and she smelled of death and cinnamon, an odd combination and it made my stomach lurch painfully.

The metal door slammed shut and I growled, I was irritated and tired now, this was not fun, this was not a game and most importantly Loki was an idiot and at this moment I wanted to beat him to a bloody pulp for this. The thought crossed my mind to just leave him here and let him find his own way out but I couldn’t do that to him. If he had done the stupid signal sooner I wouldn’t even have to do all of this. I run towards the house, covering my face with an arm as I jump through the window, the sticky shards covering me, I could feel some piercing my skin but brushed it off as I landed hard on the floor, pain shooting up my legs as they cramp, if this wasn’t a serious situation I would have crumpled to the floor like an injured child.

Let go of him or I’ll blow your head off! I shout as I straighten up, the Witch screeches and looks at me, I keep my gun trained on her. Why are you here? What could you people possibly want, I’ve done nothing wrong to you! she yells at me, defensive. You’ve been practicing blood magic, that’s strictly forbidden Loraine, not to mention you’ve been eating the children of this town. I inform her as I inch closer, cautiously. Not me, no I haven’t been eating no children. She insists, her dagger like nails tightening on Loki, digging into his skin, making popping noises as they break through, he hisses in pain and she snarls and bares her sharp teeth at him. She was definitely losing her touch with reality. Yes you have I can smell it. I tell her and she snarls at me. Were the same you know? Killing things to stay alive and young. We have to do it, don’t know why your kind gets uppity about it. Like your better then the rest of us! she snaps at me, spitting ‘your kind’ out like it left a bad taste in her mouth. I snarl, feeling my fangs tearing through my gums, There’s the monster, see you can’t control it! You have to feed it. She tells me, trying to reason with me. Tell me what you know Witch or you’ll be my next meal. I tell her, watching her as she lets Loki go and walks around her counter, she looks back at me. I can already feel the monster lurking just beneath my skin, already edging its way out, I had worked so hard to keep it contained. I hated losing control of myself and tried to avoid it, although I really hadn’t had time to eat recently.

I don’t know anything about no blood magic or children. She tells me and then she lunges at me, long sharp twisted looking blade in her hand but I side stepped and grabbed her hair, slamming her down on the floor. Tell me where Pyre is. Now. I snap, she laughs. Him? Sorry I don’t know anything. She tells me and I look at Loki. That poor boy is a dead man walking! she cries suddenly, her laughs echoing off of the walls, her face crinkling as she did so, eyes losing focus.

You should have let me eat her I whined slightly as we walk through the front door of our house, Loki raised an eyebrow at me. Wasn’t her blood enough for you? He asked and I shake my head. Its never enough you know that. I complain and he shakes his head. So greedy, I’m sure you’ll live. He tells me and I roll my eyes. Yeah sure, I suppose I will. I say, I start my way up the stairs. What about the paper work Bluu? Loki calls after me and I pause and look back at him. Log it in for me? I need a shower. I tell him, making my way to my room already pulling my clothes off as I make my way up the stairs. I hear him mutter a response to me but brush it off as I walk into my room, I really need to wash this sticky mess off. It was leaving a bad taste in my mouth both literally and figuratively. I pause at my vanity, eyes landing on a picture of myself in Pyre. It was one of my favorites, it was his too even if he wouldn’t say it I knew it
