About this ebook

Elizabeth Epona Pendergass lives a privileged life. She attends a strict private school, is driven by a chauffeur, and takes riding lessons. Grandmother and Grandfather Pendergass were from one of the oldest families of Boston, tracing their family tree back to England, where they were distantly related to royalty.

But Elizabeth maintains a sweet, unspoiled spirit of obedience, even if it goes against everything she thinks or wants. Her love of horses drives most everything she does. As the school year ends in the city, Elizabeth looks forward to spending her summer with her grandparents in Kentucky while her parents tour Europe again.

Lizzy N Dizzy follows Elizabeth on a summer journey that leads her to a new relationship with her blue-blooded grandparents and, eventually, her parents. It shares how her love of horses makes all this possible, along with some new friends, like Jed and DIZ, she meets along the way.

    Love of Horses

E LIZABETH EPONA PENDERGASS PULLED at the tie of her school uniform. She felt as if it were choking the life out of her, just like this stuffy private school. How she had endured another year she would never know. She just had to get through this last week, and then she would be out of the congestion of the city and in the country with her grandparents. As soon as the school bell rang, Elizabeth shot out of her seat and dashed for the door.

Miss Pendergass, decorum if you please! A severe-looking teacher scolded Elizabeth for her hasty departure. Slowing down she kept her focus on her objective, the door. Today was Wednesday, and that meant going to the stables for her riding lessons.

Jake, Elizabeth’s chauffeur, was waiting with the car. He was ever-faithful arriving with the long black Lincoln Continental stretch limousine. Her parents never picked her up. Elizabeth wasn’t even sure they could find their way to the school, but she didn’t let it bother her anymore. Not like it did when she was little. She would watch other parents welcome their children with open arms and big smiles, but not hers. They were the Pendergasses, after all. They did not believe in any public show of emotions, let alone affection. Oh, Elizabeth knew her parents loved her, even if she was a girl. (They had a hard time hiding the disappointment of her gender; who would carry on the family name?) They just had a different way of showing love, like by giving her riding lessons. Even if the lessons were riding with decorum in an English saddle, it meant she could be with her beloved horse.

Elizabeth loved horses much more than she loved people. Since her first wish for a pony at the age of six, she had been consumed with her love of horses. Her first riding lesson was on a fat dapple-gray pony named Prince. (It was hard to believe that was six years ago.) Now, the horse she rode was a very tall thoroughbred. Her mount at the present was Mr. Majestic Thunder. How he got that name Elizabeth could not understand, as there was nothing thunderous about him, unless one counted the blaze on his face that looked like a bolt of lightning. He was always happy to see her and greeted her with a loud whinny, which would invariably get rewarded with horse candy that tasted like apples.

Jessica, her personal maid, was waiting at the barn for Elizabeth to help her change into her riding clothes. Jessica pulled Elizabeth’s hair back into such a tight bun that she swore she would end up with slanted eyes.

Elizabeth’s riding coach was a multi-gold-medal winner, named Stefan Narcis, a very no-nonsense kind of guy. Nothing he could say or do could damper her joy of riding. Miss Pendergass, sit up straight, arms up, elbows in! So it went, girl and horse, around and around the course, as she listened, was corrected, and sat stiff and proper — just like the rest of her life.
